It advocates the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine,[2] fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers, and gold.[3] Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seek greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South. Fair Trade Organizations, backed by consumers, are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.[4] There are several recognized Fairtrade certifiers, including Fairtrade International (formerly called FLO/Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International), IMO and Eco-Social. A study in the Norwegian utility industry Background: The importance of sourcing activities is high in many companies and awareness of its impact on competitiveness has been increasing. Sourcing affects both the cost structure and the features of the final product. One way of increasing the performance of sourcing is to join forces and work together in order to create synergy. Synergy is the increased value by working together rather than apart. Many companies have started corporate and multinational initiatives in order to coordinate sourcing across its related diversified business units. One way of doing this is for several business units to share a common sourcing department or coordinate the sourcing processes, accumulating the sourcing volume in order to gain economies of scale. However, in order to create such synergies, some coordination mechanisms must be in place.
