One is world-famous, at least for his film music – the other known, outside his native land, only to a few cognoscen ti; one was an exile from his homeland – the other an ‘internal exile’ within his homeland, his music celebrating his people’s national aspirations under a suc ces sion of over bear - ing foreign powers. But the two are united in their music’s heartfelt and unabashed romanticism. Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s early career resembles that of Mozart, with whom he shared one of his forenames. -

Conciertos Grapa LITHUANIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (LNSO) "... -

Oteri The music of Žibuoklė Martinaitytė conjures both the imposing grandeur and the fragile minutiae of the external and the internal world – the natural, physical domain of forests, mountains, oceans, sky, and the infinite cosmos, but also the realm of our consciousness as well as unconsciousness. But in this vast territory that she explores through sound, Martinaitytė focuses on beauty which she has stated serves both as “a guiding principle” and as “an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.” Born to Lithuanian parents in St. Petersburg, Russia (then Leningrad in the Soviet Union), Martinaitytė grew up in Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city, and later pursued her composition studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (where her teachers included the celebrated composer Bronius Kutavičius) in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital. She lived through years of her homeland’s enforced incorporation into the USSR and then during its subsequent emergence as an independent nation. For over a decade she has been based in New York City, although she frequently travels around the world for performances as well as to create her singular musical compositions in isolated physical environments. -

Lietuvos muzikologija, t. 21, 2020 Danutė PETRAUSKAITĖ Vytautas Laurušas’s Worldview as Reflected in His Activity and Letters to Jeronimas Kačinskas Vytauto Laurušo pasaulėžiūros atspindžiai jo veikloje ir laiškuose Jeronimui Kačinskui Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija, Gedimino pr. 42, LT-01110, Vilnius, Lietuva [email protected] Abstract Vytautas Laurušas (1930–2019) was a composer, pedagogue, administrator, Communist Party activist, supporter of the restoration of Lithu- ania’s independence, and winner of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts. He lived and worked in two different epochs: in the Soviet era, that is, under totalitarian rule, and in independent Lithuania. The topic of this paper is Laurušas’s memoirs and epistolary legacy, and the aim is to explore his worldview, which allowed him to perform successfully in different times. The research is based on several methods: analysis of primary sources, the history of music, musicological literature, and periodicals, given the ideological context, as well as comparison and generalization of facts and interpretations. The paper does not claim to reveal the development of Laurušas’s mindset comprehensively and consistently, as it is based on only a minor part of his memoirs and letters; however, it is expected to be of use to those who want to study Laurušas’s artistic and social activities in depth. Keywords: Vytautas Laurušas, Jeronimas Kačinskas, Lithuania, the USA, music, Soviet era, Communist Party, national revival, diaspora, independence. Anotacija Vytautas Laurušas (1930–2019) – kompozitorius, pedagogas, administratorius, komunistų partijos veikėjas, Lietuvos nepriklausomybės atkūrimo šalininkas, Lietuvos nacionalinės kultūros ir meno premijos laureatas. THE LITHUANIAN CHORAL TRADITION: HISTORY, CONTEXT, EDUCATION, AND PRACTICE By INETA ILGUNAITĖ JONUŠAS A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2010 1 © 2010 Ineta Ilgunaitė Jonušas 2 To the memory of Bronius Jonušas and his music “Heaven’s blessing earns he, who chooses music as his profession.” (Martin Luther) 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS When I left Lithuania, it was not so much to start a new life as to continue my old life, which revolved around music, in a new environment. I planned that I would attend an American university where I would continue my study of music and choral conducting to earn a master’s and doctoral degrees. My hope was to one day teach others to “make music” the way I had heard it most of my life in Lithuania. Now, after eight years of studying music in Lithuania and five years of graduate study in America, it seems that I have been blessed with the best of both worlds for having had the opportunity to learn from so many eminent Lithuanian and American “music makers.” In Lithuania, at the Vilnius Tallat-Kelpša Conservatory, while still a teenager, I was fortunate in being able to take my first lessons in conducting from Professor Vytautas Žvirblis, whose name will probably not mean much to anyone but the students who learned from his graceful hands. Later at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, I learned from Professor Vaclovas Radžiūnas, my major professor, and Jonas Aleksa, conductor of the Lithuanian State Opera. -
Modernity in Music Culture of the Independent Lithuania: Reception and Yearning Modernybė Nepriklausomos Lietuvos Muzikos Kultūroje
Lietuvos muzikologija, 1.17, 2016 Jonas BRUVERIS Modernity in Music Culture of the Independent Lithuania: Reception and Yearning Modernybė nepriklausomos Lietuvos muzikos kultūroje. Recepcija ir siekis Abstract Modernity appeared in the Lithuanian art in the first decade of the 20 th century. Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ ideas do not link Lithu anian music from the point of view of its indispensable national character to the features of the folk music, corresponding to the tendency of the literary and art criticism to link the national character of works with the personality of the artist, but not with the choice of historic and other topics or subjects of the work. Cultural life of the Independent Lithuania has changed in essence. Professional art institutions have been established, possibilities, paths, and volumes of organization of the cultural life were incomparably increased. Music culture is analysed in the article within the context of the entire artistic life; a certain variability of reception and estimation of modernity in a) European music in general, b) in the Lithuanian culture of art (programmes of concerts, theatre repertoires, etc.), and c) in the creative work of Lithuanian artists. Keywords: modernity, traditionalism, nationalism in art. Anotacija Modernumo apraiškų lietuvių mene pasirodė XX a. pirmame dešimtmetyje. Mikalojaus Konstantino Čiurlionio idėja lietuvių muzikos jos būtino tautiškumo aspektu nesieti su liaudies muzikos savybių panaudojimu atitiko moderniosios literatūros kritikos ir dailėtyros nuostatas meno kūrinio tautiškumą ne sieti su istorinių, krašto gyvenimo ir panašių temų bei siužetų pasirinkimu, o kildinti iš kūrėjo tautinės asmenybės. Atkūrus Lietuvos nepriklausomybę, kultūros gyvenimas pakito iš esmės. Įkurtos profesinės meno įstaigos, pasikeitė ir išaugo kultūros gyvenimo organizavimo galimybės, būdai ir apimtys. -
