  • Wild Species 2010 the GENERAL STATUS of SPECIES in CANADA
Wild Species 2010 THE GENERAL STATUS OF SPECIES IN CANADA Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council National General Status Working Group This report is a product from the collaboration of all provincial and territorial governments in Canada, and of the federal government. Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council (CESCC). 2011. Wild Species 2010: The General Status of Species in Canada. National General Status Working Group: 302 pp. Available in French under title: Espèces sauvages 2010: La situation générale des espèces au Canada. ii Abstract Wild Species 2010 is the third report of the series after 2000 and 2005. The aim of the Wild Species series is to provide an overview on which species occur in Canada, in which provinces, territories or ocean regions they occur, and what is their status. Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure.

  • Notes on Trichoferus Arenbergeri with Description of Male (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae)
Fragmenta entomologica, Roma, 40 (1): 105-114 (2008) NOTES ON TRICHOFERUS ARENBERGERI WITH DESCRIPTION OF MALE (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) ALESSANDRO B. BISCACCIANTI (*) and DANIELE SECHI (**) Trichoferus arenbergeri Holzschuh, 1995 was described from Sar- dinia based upon three females collected in the following localities: “2 km westl, Siniscola [NU], Monte Albo” (locus typicus), “Siniscola (Nuoro)” and “Ozieri” [SS] (Holzschuh 1995: 15). The male of this taxon is still unknown, as well as its biology, ecology and preimaginal stages. During several surveys carried out from 2002 to 2007 at differ- ent sites in southern Sardinia, several specimens (larvae, pupae and adults of both sexes) of this poorly known longhorn beetle were col- lected and observed. The aim of this paper is to describe the male morphology, the biology and the habitat of the species, with a discus- sion about its relationship to other congeneric species. Larval and pu- pal morphology will be treated in a further contribution (Biscaccianti & Di Giulio unpublished data). Specimens examined are listed from North to South and from East to West; they are preserved in the collections listed below. Measures of specimens are taken in the following way. Total length: from the forehead to the apex of elytra; elytral length: from humerus to elytral apex; elytral width: maximum width at humeri; tarsal joint length: from the base of joint (excluding articulation) to the apical margin, or to the midpoint of a line tangential to the apex of the lobes (for bilobed joints); tarsal joint width: maximum width. Nomenclature of associated beetle-fauna follows Liberti (2007), plant nomenclature follows Conti et al.

  • Cretaceous Environmental Changes Led To
Kergoat et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology 2014, 14:220 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/14/220 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Cretaceous environmental changes led to high extinction rates in a hyperdiverse beetle family Gael J Kergoat1*, Patrice Bouchard2, Anne-Laure Clamens1, Jessica L Abbate3, Hervé Jourdan4, Roula Jabbour-Zahab3, Gwenaelle Genson1, Laurent Soldati1 and Fabien L Condamine5 Abstract Background: As attested by the fossil record, Cretaceous environmental changes have significantly impacted the diversification dynamics of several groups of organisms. A major biome turnover that occurred during this period was the rise of angiosperms starting ca. 125 million years ago. Though there is evidence that the latter promoted the diversification of phytophagous insects, the response of other insect groups to Cretaceous environmental changes is still largely unknown. To gain novel insights on this issue, we assess the diversification dynamics of a hyperdiverse family of detritivorous beetles (Tenebrionidae) using molecular dating and diversification analyses. Results: Age estimates reveal an origin after the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction (older than previously thought), followed by the diversification of major lineages during Pangaean and Gondwanan breakups. Dating analyses indicate that arid-adapted species diversified early, while most of the lineages that are adapted to more humid conditions diversified much later. Contrary to other insect groups, we found no support for a positive shift in diversification rates during the Cretaceous; instead there is evidence for an 8.5-fold increase in extinction rates that was not compensated by a joint increase in speciation rates. Conclusions: We hypothesize that this pattern is better explained by the concomitant reduction of arid environments starting in the mid-Cretaceous, which likely negatively impacted the diversification of arid-adapted species that were predominant at that time.

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract Increasing forest management resulting from bark beetle attack in British Columbia's forests has created a need to assess the impact of single species management on local insect biodiversity. In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district.

ABSTRACT: The list includes 23 species of Laboulbeniales (Ascomycota) in 8 genera. Six species are new for the Canary Islands. The majority of recorded species infests Carabidae (Coleoptera). Most host species (23) are endemic, only nine hosts also occur outside the Macaronesian region. There are 21 endemic and 6 widespread host species in the Carabidae as most diverse host family. The distribution pattern of Laboulbeniales corresponds with two ecological factors (moisture and host biodiversity respectively) which vary strongly between the different islands.
