Where will my child go to school? And what am I going to do in my free time when I hardly know anyone in my new home? This brochure is meant to help you to settle down in your new place of residence. But we not only want you to know what forms you have to fill out; we want you to have a sense of well-being in Basel and soon no longer feel like a new- comer, but rather as a part of this city canton. The central institution for this contact is the Customer Centre of the Residential Registration Office, with a broad range of services on offer. RESIDENTIAL REGISTRATION OFFICE The Residential Registration Office is also specifically the first contact point for people who are moving to Basel and must deal with their residency status in the canton. It records the data concerning all Swiss and foreign inhabitants. This includes, for example, changes in marital status, address changes, name changes, births and deaths. The Residential Registration Office gives advice to newcomers and issues certificates and confirmations. In addition information and forms from other cantonal departments can be obtained here, as well as a number of motor vehicle inspection products. Passports and identity cards for Swiss citizens are issued by the passport office. It also handles lost property and issues certifications and apostilles. PERMITS Personal advice is offered at the contact points in the Residential Registra- tion Office, at the motor vehicle inspection department and at the building and traffic department. In some cases permits from other offices can also be applied for there. KEEPING ANIMALS As a rule keeping pets does not require a permit in the canton of Basel- Stadt (exception: potentially dangerous dogs). However, when crossing the border, vaccination rules and / or special import regulations apply to many animals. Various regulations concerning keeping them must also be complied with. And all animals must be accommodated and cared for in a manner appropriate to their species. In addition dogs must be registered or re-registered for taxation with the veterinary office and also with AMICUS, and must carry a microchip. WASTE DISPOSAL Daily tasks include, for example, the disposal of waste materials. In the canton of Basel-Stadt household rubbish – which by the way is called “Hauskehricht” in Switzerland – is collected twice a week. What districts are served on what days of the week is noted on the waste disposal calendar, which is supplied once a year or can be obtained in the Cus- tomer Centre of the Residential Registration Office and at police stations. For your “Hauskehricht” you must use the official rubbish bags of the canton, so-called “Bebbi-Säcke”. You can buy them at the till in most grocery shops. RADIO AND TV Radio and TV are subject to licence fees in Switzerland. It does not matter whether radio, television, computer, tablet or mobile phone are present or in use. Serafe has been tasked by the Confederation with collecting the li- censing fees. The licensing fees are paid per household, not per device. Families, flat-sharing communities or couples who live in the same house- hold pay the fees only once. ENERGY AND DRINKING WATER The canton of Basel-Stadt is supplied with energy and drinking water by the Industrielle Werke (IWB). So that your energy and water consumption can be paid for correctly, please notify the IWB of any move by one week beforehand at the latest. 4 5 Everyday life RENTED HOUSING If you live in a rental house or apartment, your landlord is the contact per- son for most matters. In contrast with many other countries, in Switzerland the kitchens in rental accommodations are part of the basic equipment, and a common laundry is available to the tenants. SHOPPING In Basel there are countless possibilities for shopping. Most businesses are open in the evening during the week until 6.30 pm, some until 8 pm. In the in- ner city most businesses close on Saturday at 5 pm or 6 pm, and in some outer districts somewhat earlier. On Sundays and public holidays you can shop in the railway stations, at many petrol stations and in a few selected grocery shops located over the whole city. My analysis of regional inequality rests on a heuristic model featuring an initial growth impulse in one or several core regions and subsequent diffusion. As a consequence of the existence of multiple core regions Swiss regional inequality has been comparatively low at higher geographical levels. Spatial diffusion of economic growth has occurred across different parts of the country and within different labor market regions at the same time. This resulted in a bell- shape evolution of regional inequality at the micro regional level and convergence at higher geographical levels. In early and in late stages of the development process, productivity differentials were the main drivers of inequality, whereas economic structure was determinant between 1888 and 1941. Im überparteilichen Wirtschaftskomitee sind über 80 Persönlichkeiten aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissen- schaft und Gesellschaft aus den beiden Kantonen Basel-Stadt und Basel-Landschaft vertreten. Alle Nati- onal- und Ständeräte der beiden Kantone der Grünen, SP, CVP, LDP und der FDP sowie Parteipräsiden- tinnen und Parteipräsidenten und weitere Vertreter aus Politik und Wirtschaft engagieren sich im Co- Präsidium gegen die Initiative und bekräftigen die negativen Auswirkungen dieser auf die Schweizer Wirt- schaft. Die Initiative will künftig die Bundesverfassung über das internationale Völkerrecht stellen, mit Ausnahme des zwingenden Völkerrechts. In einem Konfliktfall soll das entsprechende Abkommen angepasst oder gekündigt werden. Damit gefährdet sie das bewährte und stabile Zusammenspiel von nationalem und internationalem Recht. Die heute weltweit geschätzte Zuverlässigkeit und Vertragstreue der Schweiz wird unter Vorbehalt gestellt. Das ist ein unnötiger und gefährlicher Angriff auf die Rechtssicherheit und die aussenpolitische Handlungsfähigkeit der Schweiz. Die Schweiz und insbesondere die Region Basel ist auf eine funktionierende internationale Verflechtung angewiesen, denn alleine in unserer Region werden 20 Millionen Tonnen Wirtschaftsgüter im- und expor- tiert. Dies entspricht rund 30% des schweizerischen Aussenhandels. Die Initiative betrifft über 600 Wirt- schaftsabkommen, die unseren Exportunternehmen – häufig KMU – einen sicheren und äusserst vorteil- haften Zugang zu internationalen Märkten ermöglichen.

Numerous figures from the worlds of politics and business have got involved in Pro Zukunftsfonds Schweiz, a Swiss investment foundation established on October 6. Fathi Derder (FDP national councilor, Vaud) has taken on the role of president and the Foundation Board includes Dr. Henri B. Meier (initiator of the foundation), Calvin Grieder (Chairman of the Board, Bühler Group), Beat Jans (SP national councilor, Basel- Stadt), Karl Reichmuth (Reichmuth Bank), and Professor Andrea Schenker-Wicki (Rector, University of Basel). The Pro Zukunftsfonds Schweiz foundation aims to create a fund of funds, which will make it possible for pension funds, insurances, and similar institutional investors to finance Swiss start-ups at the forefront of technological development with investments over several years so that these can develop their innovative products right up until they are launched on the market. A small proportion of long-term Swiss savings is therefore to be returned to the real employment-generating economy to create jobs with a great degree of added value in future key technologies for future generations. The foundation is also advocating accompanying measures which will improve the framework conditions for Swiss start-ups. It is therefore calling for the implementation of the Graber motion, which was passed by the National Council and Council of States in February 2014 and transferred to the Federal Council. In terms of public spending on education and spending on research and development, Switzerland is an international leader and has a constantly high level of innovation potential.
