It is the world’s biggest and most significant event of its kind, last year bringing in around 150,000 visitors from 100 countries around the world. BASELWORLD has placed Basel as a city, and Switzerland as a country, on the map as the well-respected world leader of the watch industry, which is so vital to Switzerland’s economy. BASELWORLD’S HISTORY This world-renowned show of luxury watches and jewelry had itS hum- more than 100,000 visitors, with the exhibitorS making outstanding ble beginnings almost 100 yearS ago right here in Basel. It all started in sales. In 1983, the name waS changed yet again, to BASEL 83. The show’S expansion continued, and in 1986 it waS opened to manufacturerS from around the world. The name BASEL followed by the last two digitS of the year of the show waS maintained until 1995, when it waS extended to “BASEL 95—The World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Show.” Additional space waS needed to house the ever-growing show, and in 1999, the “watch hall” (Halle 1) at the Messeplatz officially opened that could accommodate the grandiose 3-story stands and allow the show to be divided into different sectors. The current name, “BASELWORLD, The Watch and Jewellery Show”— normally abbreviated to Simply BASELWORLD—was adopted in 2003 to underline the show’S position as the leading event globally for the luxury-goods industry. In 2004, a 160,000 m2 new hall complex was converted into the "Hall of Universe" (Halle 6) in record time to house different national pavilions. By 2007, BASELWORLD went down in his- tory as a truly spectacular event as for the first time they welcomed 4 Basel Life Magazine / www.basellife.com BASELWORLD TODAY Currently, BASELWORLD is the focal point of the industry, where all players Showcase their creations and innovations and where new trends are set. During this week, merchandise worth tens of billions of dollarS is displayed, bought, and traded. Last year, 1,500 brands from around the world—specialists in watches, jewelry, precious gems, and related brands—showcased their lateSt products, collections, creations, and innovations to those in the industry, and a similar turnout is ex- pected this year.
