Yüzyıl Osmanlı Sufiliğinde İki Esrarlı Nokta - Tarih Yazıcılığı Açısından Bir Deneme Bölüm I: Eşrefoğlu’nun Sonu Ne Oldu? * The bulk of the research on which the following essay is based was carried out in the libraries of Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara and was documented in my (unpublished) 1972 Harvard thesis: “Eşrefoğlu Rumi: Fifteenth Century Anatolian Mystic Poet.” This essay was projected as part of a book, tentatively titled Two Tekke Poets, and several times prematurely cited as “forthcoming”. Unfortunately that project was not realized. Since then research published by other writers has lengthened the relevant bibliography but has not, for the most part, addressed the questions raised in the above synopsis, or altered my earlier thinking about Eşrefoğlu. It is a pleasure, belatedly, to acknowledge the encouragement (and criticisms) of V. L. Menage and the late Andreas Tietze who both read an unfinished draft of “Two Tekke Poets” now many years ago. Thanks also, even more belatedly, to Irene Beldiceanu-Steinherr for her assistance in using the diary cited in note 41. And thanks now to R. Dankoff, Gary Leiser, Ralph Jaeckel for their more recent comments. Finally, thanks also to this journal’s pre-publication readers, who further helped shape this essay. None of them are responsible for any remaining errors. Opinions expressed are my own. ** Formerly Associate Professor of Turkish Language and Literature of the University of California (Berkeley). Bu revizyonist deneme, kaynakları ve literatürü yeniden gözden geçirerek bu sorulara inandırıcı cevaplar vermeyi hedefler. Anahtar kelimeler: Eşrefoğlu Rumi, Osmanlı Mutasavvıf şairleri, Azizlerin hayatına ait eserler “Eşrefoğlu Rumi”, to use his widely accepted pen-name, is one of the major figures of 15th century Ottoman sufism: inspired teacher, author of manuals of mystical belief and practice, and poet of lasting renown. While the earliest accounts of his life reflect the interests and preoccupations of his biographers, beyond the sometimes clichéd formulations there are suggestions of a sinister end to the life of this long venerated sheikh. Other sources, heretofore overlooked, add weight to these intimations. If false, why did such rumors circulate in the first place? Why were they not then convincingly challenged and discredited? Or are they to be accepted after all? And how is it that those stories have attracted little interest among scholars? A close reading of all the sources shows that much that has been accepted about Eşrefoğlu must be reevaluated and possibly revised. THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS by Hüsamettin ŞİMŞİR Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Sabancı University June 2018 © Hüsamettin Şimşir 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS Hüsamettin Şimşir M.A Thesis, June 2018 Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Fac. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

Box 80200, Jeddah, 21589 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia FOREWORD There are numerous works on the history of Islamic economic thought. But almost all researches come to an end in 9th AH/15th CE century. We hardly find a reference to the economic ideas of Muslim scholars who lived in the 16th or 17th century, in works dealing with the history of Islamic economic thought. The period after the 9th/15th century remained largely unexplored. Dr. Islahi has ventured to investigate the periods after the 9th/15th century. He has already completed a study on Muslim economic thinking and institutions in the 10th/16th century (2009). In the mean time, he carried out the study on Muslim economic thinking during the 11th/17th century, which is now in your hand. As the author would like to note, it is only a sketch of the economic ideas in the period under study and a research initiative. It covers the sources available in Arabic, with a focus on the heartland of Islam. There is a need to explore Muslim economic ideas in works written in Persian, Turkish and other languages, as the importance of these languages increased in later periods.

Anahtar kelimeler: Musa Çelebi, Hıristiyan Aktörler, Osmanlı Devleti, Osmanlı Şehzade Mücadeleleri, Bizans, Balkan, Rumeli MOUSA TSCHELEBI’S REVOLT AND THE ROLE OF CHRISTIAN ACTORS (1403-1410) ABSTRACT The history of Mousa Tschelebi’ transportation to Rumelia is considered as insignificant event in Ottoman sources in very short accounts. In addition, this event has been connected with the alliances which had been made among Mehmed, the rulers of Karaman and Sinope and Vlachian prince. Modern scholars seems to have been following the accounts of Ottoman chroniclers. However, the newly discovered Byzantine, Ottoman and Latin sources say otherwise.

historia scribere 13 (2021) The Beginnings of an Empire. The Transformation of the Ottoman State into an Empire, demonstrated at the example of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and accomplishments Vera Flatz Kerngebiet: Neuzeit eingereicht bei: Yasir Yilmaz, MA PhD und Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefan Ehrenpreis eingereicht im: WiSe 2019/20 Rubrik: Seminar-Arbeit Abstract The Beginnings of an Empire. The Transformation of the Ottoman State into an Empire, demonstrated at the example of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and accomplishments The following seminar paper deals with Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha’s life and the processes that turned an Ottoman principality into the Ottoman Empire. Starting with Sultan Mehmed’s II appointment in 1444, important practic- es such as the nomination of a grand vizier changed significantly. Moreover, Mehmed II built a new palace which reflected the new imperial self-percep- tion, a new code of law was installed, and the empire was centralised. All these developments become especially visible in the life of Grand Vizier Mahmud Pasha Angelovic. The paper examines secondary literature as well as contem- porary sources of Kritobolous and Ibn Khaldun. Sources on Mahmud Pasha’s life are rare and need to be analysed with caution as his posthumous legend influenced the production of literature about his life. 1. Introduction Mahmud Pasha Angelovic, born at the beginning of the 15th century in a town in Ser- bia, became one of the most influential grand viziers of the Ottoman Empire. How did that happen? In 1453, Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and made it the capital of one of the biggest empires of the early modern period.

  • Turkish Cinema
Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kalpaklı January 2018 In the early 17th-century Ottoman Empire, a series of sociocultural, administrative, political, and economic changes were underway that left their mark on how the learned and cultural elite viewed the empire and themselves. Though contemporary sources reflect these shifts in many ways , this period’s rich corpus of invective verse , centering around the poet Nefʿī , has been understudied as a historical source. This dissertation rectifies this neglect by examining this invective corpus as a locus of rivalries and enmities revealing how those involved agonistically defined and were defined by their others, thus necessarily defining themselves in the process. Observing this process of definition and self-definition in the light of contemporary historical developments and sources, the dissertation examines invectives produced against both patrons ( i.e., vertical invective) and fellow poet/clients ( i.e., horizontal invective) in such a way as to demonstrate how the ferocity of the period’s invective verse, and reactions thereto, laid bare how Ottoman elites’ imaginary of themselves was in fact a marginalizing construct.
