Explaining what exactly an orgasm is seems to become more elusive even as science tries to specify it more precisely. Indeed, some would argue that orgasm is a mystical and magical thing which should not be subject to too much scrutiny in case this mysteriousness is unravelled and spoiled. But what exactly orgasm is, is perhaps a less interesting ques- tion than why it matters. Scientific work on orgasm focuses on trying to establish definitively what an orgasm is, specifying the biological path- ways through which physical sensation is perceived as pleasurable, and the mechanisms through which this ‘response’ is triggered. But the more interesting question – at least for social scientists – is why orgasm is seen as having such significance, to be worthy of such attention. Orgasm, and female orgasm in particular, has been dogged by scientific and social controversy – from disagreements about whether orgasm originates in the vagina or the clitoris (or any other part of the body), whether or how it serves any evolutionary function, whether it is a necessary part of women’s sexual satisfaction, and whether it is a site of women’s oppres- sion, liberation or both. Orgasms are also big business – for pharmaceu- tical companies desperate to find the ‘pink’ Viagra™ to ‘help’ women orgasm more easily or more frequently, for those who profit from visual representations of orgasm in everything from shampoo adverts to hard core pornography, for sex workers who are paid to elicit orgasms from clients, and for those who trade in creams, gels, toys, self-help books, and therapeutic services designed to enhance orgasmic pleasure. This cacophony of cultural chatter about female orgasm draws attention both to its problematisation and its symbolic significance in relation to a range of competing professional and commercial interests. This book, then, explores the meaning of orgasm. Noisy debates about female orgasm, accompanied by intense scrutiny, monitoring, measurement, 1 2 Orgasmic Bodies and disciplining of female bodies, are not paralleled by similar careful and considered attention to men’s orgasm. Here there is relative silence. This is not to suggest that men’s sexuality or bodies are not subject to the clinical (and other) gaze – the recent commercial success of pharma- ceutical treatments for ‘erectile dysfunction’ and the reshaping of the aging body as ‘forever sexual’ would suggest otherwise. But the bodily location, presence, or availability of men’s orgasm has not been consid- ered controversial or even particularly interesting. This suggests that the meaning of orgasm is heavily gendered, and that the ‘doing’ of orgasm has a bearing on the ‘doing’ of masculinity and femininity. The place of orgasm in heterosex (sexual practices – especially penis-in-vagina inter- course – between men and women) is subject to intense surveillance and offers a focus for this book. Evidence of an ‘orgasm gap’, where men experience orgasm more frequently and reliably than women, is often the focus of social and scientific scrutiny in ways which reaffirm heterosexuality as an institution and reproduce the unequal gendered power relationships on which this rests. Treating orgasm as primarily an embodied sociocultural ‘event’ (rather than a biological response) – something which is experienced in and through the body but which becomes knowable only through its socially embedded meaning – this book uses orgasm as a useful springboard for examining the relation- ships between gender, the body, sexuality, science and consumption. Orgasmic origins One way of exploring the social construction of the orgasm, and unset- tling its status as a biological/medical ‘fact’, is to understand how the meaning of orgasm has changed over time. Laqueur’s (1986, 2009) inval- uable historical analysis of the use of the term ‘orgasm’ is illuminating. For centuries, he argues, orgasm was an allegory of the cosmos and crea- tion, an event of cosmic significance signalling the origin of the soul and its entry into the body during conception. But, between the early 18th and late 19th century orgasm transformed into being understood as ‘simply a feeling’ (1986: 1), something that a body might or might not experience. According to Laqueur, these changes were not the result of new scientific discoveries, but were closely tied to cultural shifts in the status of biology as a science and the social, economic and polit- ical roles of women. He identifies a number of key points at which the meaning of orgasm shifted. In 1556, Realdo Columbus claimed to have discovered the clitoris, which marked a ‘decisive shift from orgasm being understood as pleasure which overwhelms the whole body to a pleasure What Is an Orgasm? 3 fixed primarily on an organ’ (Laqueur, 2009: 429).

Kinky Sexual Subcultures and Virtual Leisure Spaces Liam Wignall A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Sunderland for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2018 i | P a g e Abstract This study seeks to understand what kink is, exploring this question using narratives and experiences of gay and bisexual men who engage in kink in the UK. In doing so, contemporary understandings of the gay kinky subcultures in the UK are provided. It discusses the role of the internet for these subcultures, highlighting the use of socio-sexual networking sites. It also recognises the existence of kink dabblers who engage in kink activities, but do not immerse themselves in kink communities. A qualitative analysis is used consisting of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 15 individuals who identify as part of a kink subculture and 15 individuals who do not. Participants were recruited through a mixture of kinky and non-kinky socio-sexual networking sites across the UK. Complimenting this, the author attended kink events throughout the UK and conducted participant observations. The study draws on subcultural theory, the leisure perspective and social constructionism to conceptualise how kink is practiced and understood by the participants. It is one of the first to address the gap in the knowledge of individuals who practice kink activities but who do so as a form of casual leisure, akin to other hobbies, as well as giving due attention to the increasing presence and importance of socio-sexual networking sites and the Internet more broadly for kink subcultures.

I argue that these popperbate videos, that function as examples of what Jean Burgess has described as ‘vernacular creativity’, construct masturbation as an activity that might be regarded, as ‘productive leisure’. But yet, he met more than his match in the form of 21-year old intern Monica Lewinsky, whose ambition and audacity he critically underestimated. A few months before their relationship became public, a puzzled Clinton even admitted to her, “If I had known what kind of a person you really were, I wouldn’t have gotten involved with you.” But the knowledge that Clinton was more fundamen- tally lacking was insight into Lewinksy’s generation. Most critically, Clinton, failed to understand today’s young women. To explain Monica Lewinsky, one has to explain Lewinsky’s demographic group, which plays by a different set of sexual rules. Lewinsky is part of a new breed of women, born during and shaped by the fomenting sexual revolution, women’s movement, and new educational and career opportunities. Sharing more of men’s power, sense of entitlement and social clout, members of this generation generally feel more comfortable than past generations in aggressively, openly and unapologetically pursuing their own in- terests in sexual relationships. The Starr Report revealed as much about Lewin- sky’s generation as about her own character. One of its most gripping revela- tions was that Lewinsky was no victimized schoolgirl; she even initiated the affair, as well as many of the “sexual encounters” between her and the president. Engaging in traditionally male locker-room talk, she bragged about her conquest to at least 10 friends.

We see such bias in nar- rator Nick Carraway’s ruminations on class and on women, in the rumors of criminality surrounding the newly rich Jay Gatsby, and, most explicitly, in the racism, classism, anti-Semitism, and anti-immigrant sentiment es- poused by Tom Buchanan, whose wealth, race, and gender position him as the voice of the dominant ideology. Tom’s reading of “The Rise of the Colored Empire” by “that man Goddard” (17) is, of course, a reference to Lothrop Stoddard’s The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy, a popular work of scientific racism published just five years before Gatsby.1 Largely following Walter Benn Michaels’ reading of The Great Gatsby in the historical context of early-twentieth-century nativism, recent critics have interpreted Fitzgerald’s allusion to racialist discourse as a linking of class with race, perceiving the narrative of social mobility as representing a kind of “passing [which] is figuratively rendered in terms of racial black- ness” (Lewis 174).
