Eleven Kinds of Delight: Colombia, 2017-2018: Marla Perkins, Ph.D
Eleven Kinds of Delight: Colombia, 2017-2018: Marla Perkins, Ph.D. Janelle married Edwin, moved to Bogotá, had a baby, F, and invited me for a visit—not necessarily in that order. I arrived shortly before midnight on December 31, 2017, and Janelle, Edwin, and F met me at the airport. They gave me eleven grapes to eat; that’s the traditional number for New Year’s Eve. I ate more. They showed me a record-breakingly huge pumpkin (it’s traditional to cook an enormous pumpkin for New Year’s Day). And they gave me a New-Year’s wall-hanging. The idea is that what one has when the new year arrives is what one will have all year long—since I was traveling for the New Year, I will travel throughout this year—doing well so far. The wall-hanging includes a variety of foods and a little wad of money, for prosperity throughout the new year—doing well on that, too, if prosperity is having enough to eat. The delight of having enough = 1 Eleven Kinds of Delight: Colombia, 2017-2018: Marla Perkins, Ph.D. Janelle is one of my favorite people. I haven’t been able to figure out as much as I would like, but she’s fun to watch, and I try to figure her out in order to enhance my own life experience: she walks around in a swarm of people who want to be her lovers; I walk around in a swarm of mosquitoes. She’s incredible. She likes cities, including huge cities like Bogotá. -

Committee Chairman Accepted: ~f~ ... 1-80411 PREFACE La legende traduit les sentiments reels des peuples. Gustav Le Bon For centuries the golden treasure of the pre-conquest inhabitants of Colombia, South America, has captured man's imagination. The various legends of El DQrado led to the exploration of half of the South Am erican continent and the discovery of the Amazon River. It also lured Sir Walter Raleigh on the ill-fated expedition that finally cost him his head in the tower of London. These legends have inspired Colombia's men of letters and interested such foreign writers as Milton, Voltaire, and Andres/ Bello. Although it is true that the imaginative and psychological aspects of the legends are of particular interest to the student of a foreign culture, a legend may contain elements of historical truth also. Since these legends pro- vide insight into the early history of Colombia, an effort to find and preserve them has been made. -

Beauty of color or lustre in a stone or some quaint form attracts the eye of the savage, and his choice of material for ornament or adornment is also conditioned by the tough- ness of some stones as compared with the facility with which others can be chipped or polished. Whereas a gem might be prized for its beauty by a single individual owner, a stone of curious and suggestive form sometimes claimed the reverence of an entire tribe, since it was thought to be the abode or the chosen instrument of some spirit or genius. Just as the appeal to higher powers for present help in pressing emergencies preceded the development of a formal religious faith, so this never-failing need of protectors or healers eventually led to the attribution of powers of protec- tion to the spirits of men and women who had led holy lives and about whose history legend had woven a web of pious imaginations at a time when poetic fancy reigned instead of historic record. -

Temoltzin Loranca UNIVERSITY OF REGINA FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH SUPERVISORY AND EXAMINING COMMITTEE Yunuén Temoltzin Loranca, candidate for the degree of Master of Science in Geology, has presented a thesis titled, Palaeoenvironments and Palaeoclimates During The Late Holocene in Lake Siscunsi (Colombia), A Multiproxy Perspective, in an oral examination held on August 20, 2018. The following committee members have found the thesis acceptable in form and content, and that the candidate demonstrated satisfactory knowledge of the subject material. External Examiner: Dr. David Sauchyn, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Co-Supervisor: Dr. Maria Velez Caicedo, Department of Geology Co-Supervisor: Dr. Gavin Simpson, Department of Biology Committee Member: *Dr. Tsilavo Raharimahefa, Department of Geology Chair of Defense: Dr. Fernando Szechtman, Department of Mathematics & Statistics *Not present at defense Abstract This thesis provides a palaeolimnological and environmental reconstruction of the last ~2,800 years of Lake Siscunsí, located in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. This study is mainly based on a high-resolution diatom record in combination with Chlorophyll 푎 and other analyses previously done in this lake, which include grain size, C/N, δ15N, δ13C, TOM, total carbonates and magnetic susceptibility. It consists of a review of the mid and late Holocene climates in Colombia, then it summarizes the most important findings in the palaeorecords of the three Colombian cordilleras and it briefly mentions the most significative periods of human effects.
