CHALLENGING THE DICHOTOMY Introduction ENTRANCE • The Museo Nacional, Bogotá Les Field, Cristóbal Gnecco, and Joe Watkins N 2010, IN THE LEAD-UP to the workshop upon which this volume is based, Les I Field (one of the three editors) once again visited the Museo Nacional (National Museum) in Bogotá, Colombia. The first floor of the museum is focused upon prehis- panic Colombia and features an extensive set of exhibits about the San Agustín site, indisputably Colombia’s most renowned archaeological treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well. The exhibit features both artifacts and historic photo- graphs of Colombian and foreign archaeologists and anthropologists who partici- pated in the early excavation of the area in the 1940s. As Field inspected the photographs, one of the museum guards initiated a con- versation with him about San Agustín. The guard told Field that he came from San Agustín and pointed out that in several photos his own grandfather and stepfather were standing next to the famous scholars Paul Rivet and Luis Duque Gómez. The guard laughed. “They didn’t do any of the digging!” he said, referring to the scholars. “It was all my abuelito—a guaquero!” A guaquero in Colombia and Ecuador is someone who engages in nonarchaeo- logical, nonscientific excavation, orguaquería , an activity that at various points in Colombia’s history has been considered a legitimate occupation but has also been, now and in the past as well, considered illicit and criminal. The watchman contin- ued. The scholars had relied on his grandfather and stepfather to determine if and where there were tombs at a part of the San Agustín complex, already internationally famous and treasured, where the Colombian state was building the first tourist hotel in the area. His family members had used a media-caña, a sort of digging rod that guaqueros have traditionally used: hardly a scientific tool. They had indeed found 4 L • ES FIELD, CRISTÓBAL GNECCO, JOE WATKINS tombs at the spot where the hotel was to be constructed. What had happened to the objects that were found, fabulous gold objects, including a gold crown, according to the watchman? Some ended up in the collection that became part of the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum); but many of them, said the watchman, again with a laugh, were sold by the very same scholars, who came back to San Agustín the next year with much fancier cars and clothing. This striking and disjunctured conversation about archaeology, guaquería, legiti- macy, illegality, museums, private collections, commodification, tourism, state inter- vention, national heritage, and international status embodies and is a fitting starting point for an elaboration of the themes of this volume, which explore similar, resonant relationships among what appear to be diametrically polar opposites.

Se establece el contexto sociocultural y político del autor, con especial atención a los círculos cultos que frecuentó en Europa. Se plantea que el Compendio responde a un proyecto patriótico de conocimiento llevado a cabo por iniciativa privada, en un momento en que el autor sentía la estabilidad de la República amenazada por fuerzas internas y externas. Se argumenta que el principal aporte de Acosta en la construcción de una memoria histórica nacional es la representación de una “civilización chibcha” comparable en grandeza con las antiguas civilizaciones de México y Perú. The initial sedentary occupation (400 BC to 800 AD) consisted of few small hamlets as well as a small number of widely dispersed farmsteads. There was no indication that these communities were integrated under any regional-scale sociopolitical authority. The population increased dramatically after 800 AD and it was organized in three supra-local communities. The largest of these regional polities was focused on a central place at Sogamoso that likely included a major temple described in Spanish accounts.

The zipa’s oldest sister’s oldest son always became the next zipa. Tisquesusa became zipa of the southern Muisca Confederation in 1514 after his uncle died. The Muisca Confederation was one nation of people that was ruled by different people in the north and south. Tisquesusa was as ready as he’d ever be. His family had just come out of mourning for his uncle. They had mummified him and buried him only a few short days before. Beside him in his royal tomb, they placed pottery, food, golden ornaments, and other necessities for the afterlife. Tisquesusa had spent the last days fasting and felt weak but purified. The ceremony was about to start. The starting point of the method is the reality-based model, which, together with ancient drawings and documents, is used for generating the first reconstructive step. Such rough approximation of a possible architectural structure can be annotated through archaeological considerations that has to be confronted with geometrical constraints, producing a reduction of the reconstructive hypotheses to a limited set, each one to be archaeologically evaluated. This refinement loop on the reconstructive choices is iterated until the result become convincing by both points of view, integrating in the best way all the available sources. The proposed method has been verified on the ruins of five temples in the My Son site, a wide archaeological area located in central Vietnam.

Smyth The Foundation for Americas Research Inc., Winter Springs, FL 32719-5553, USA; [email protected] or [email protected] Received: 16 May 2018; Accepted: 9 July 2018; Published: 11 July 2018 Abstract: The natural and cultural heritage of the Valley of Leiva in the Eastern Colombian Andes is closely tied to the Colonial town of Villa de Leyva. The popular tourist destination with rapid economic development and agricultural expansion contrasts sharply with an environment of limited water resources and landscape erosion. The recent discovery of Prehispanic hydraulic systems underscore ancient responses to water shortages conditioned by climate change. In an environment where effective rainfall and erosion are problematic, irrigation was vital to human settlement in this semi-arid highland valley. A chiefly elite responded to unpredictable precipitation by engineering a hydraulic landscape sanctioned by religious cosmology and the monolithic observatory at El Infiernito, the Stonehenge of Colombia. Early Colonial water works, however, transformed Villa de Leyva into a wheat breadbasket, though climatic downturns and poor management strategies contributed to an early 17th century crash in wheat production. Today, housing construction, intensive agriculture, and environmental instability combine to recreate conditions for acute water shortages. The heritage of a relatively dry valley with a long history of hydraulic chiefdoms, of which modern planners seem unaware, raises concerns for conservation and vulnerability to climate extremes and the need for understanding the prehistoric context and the magnitude of water availability today. This paper examines human ecodynamic factors related to the legacy of Muisca chiefdoms in the Leiva Valley and relevant issues of heritage in an Andean region undergoing rapid socio-economic change.

Our programs address crisis relief through strong nonprofi t organizations, led by heroic Greeks that are serving their country.
