Welcome to the 80th Annual Bible Lectureship at Freed-Hardeman. One can only wonder what those men who started the preacher’s course early last century would think of the crowds, the advances in technology and the campus itself if they could see it today. I trust they would be pleased with the progress made on these fronts while maintaining the faithfulness of the message. This year’s event has added new programs for the needs of today’s audience, but it builds on a rich history. That first preacher’s course included sessions on church history, Bible geography, young preachers’ meetings, sight singing and even English and spelling. The course lasted a month, and the library remained open around the clock to allow the attendees to research the topics discussed in the lectures. This year the library won’t be open around the clock, but we do hope you will take the time to visit the new Hope Barber Shull Academic Resource Center. Open for the first time this semester, we fully expect it to be a blessing to students for many years to come. Neither do you have to take notes and do research. You can simply purchase a jump drive and/or a book and take the lectures home with you. When recounting the 1937 preacher’s course (lectureship’s origin), the 1943-44 Freed- JOE WILEY Hardeman Bulletin said, “The interest manifested and the good accomplished were beyond our fondest hopes.” Our prayer is that we will be able to say the same of this President year’s lectureship. Freed-Hardeman University We’re glad you’re here. Enjoy your stay and leave rejuvenated and invigorated for the great work that lies ahead — sharing the good news of the servant savior. For many years brothers and sisters in Christ have looked forward to the annual Freed- Hardeman University Bible Lectureship. As we celebrate the 80-year heritage of the FHU Bible Lectureship, I am particularly thankful that all the changes that have occurred still focus on the study of God’s Word and building up people of all ages. This year’s theme is “In My Place: The Servant Savior in Mark.” The Gospel of Mark is often overlooked as the brief, fast-moving narrative that shares so much content with the longer gospel accounts of Matthew and Luke, yet Mark’s perspective on Christ challenges readers to consider the power of the suffering Savior who ultimately came to pay the price for the sin of humankind. Christians today should not forget the power of the Christ who suffered and died in their place. The Lectureship Committee recognizes the sacrifices that many make in order to attend the annual lectures. This year we have attempted to put together a program that is centered on the study of God’s Word, while also touching on a number of questions and needs that are especially important for Christians in our current cultural climate. The FHU Bible Lectureship seeks to glorify God and to serve the Freed-Hardeman community and many other Christians from around the world who desire to be better equipped with knowledge for ministry in the kingdom of God. The lectureship is one of many products that comes about because Freed-Hardeman University desires not only to prepare young men and women to serve for God’s glory but also to serve the church. While the lectureship committee works hard to put together a meaningful program, most of all we are thankful for the students at Freed- DOUG BURLESON Hardeman. As they welcome so many guests to campus, they perhaps find their waits Director in line to be a little longer or parking spots less available, yet they still represent in a Christ-like manner the best that Freed-Hardeman has to offer. We are glad you are here FHU Annual Bible Lectureship and hope you have a great week. ONLINE Register and explore details about this year’s lectureship at fhu.edu/lectureship.
