“We Have a Dream: History of the Christian College Librarians” is dedicated to the group of librarians who met in Oklahoma City for the first time in 1974. Some had big dreams and some were just beginning to get a glimpse of possible dreams of cooperation among the libraries of our Church of Christ related colleges. A special dedication goes to each librarian who has dared to dream, and carry out those dreams, through the past thirty one years.

A special dedication goes to Abilene Christian College/University and those capable librarians and administrators who pioneered the computer capabilities that made it possible to begin and continue the Restoration Serials Index. INTRODUCTION

Christian college librarians have been meeting as a group since 1974. This is a period of thirty two years. During the 2005 conference at Rochester College it was felt that a history of the Christian college librarians would be in order and President Craig Churchill asked Winnie Bell, Librarian Emeritus from Harding University to consult with Erma Jean Loveland, ACU Emeritus, Griffin Copeland, Florida College Emeritus, Charles Baucom, York College Emeritus, Don Meredith of HGSR, or others that were present at the organizational meeting and prepare a history of the association. Winnie accepted the appointment.

There were 28 people at the first conference at Oklahoma Christian College, representing the following 12 colleges: Abilene Christian College, Alabama Christian College, David Lipscomb College, Florida College, Freed-Hardeman College, Harding College, Harding Graduate School, Lubbock Christian College, Northeastern Christian College, Oklahoma Christian College, Pepperdine University, and York College. A listing of all who attended for this first conference, as well as all conferences, is found in the chart of PARTICIPANTS IN CCL CONFERENCES. The person who has attended the most conferences is Marsha Harper* with 21 conferences: Don Meredith* attended 20, Myrna Perry* 18, Charles Baucom* 16, Winnie Bell* 16 + 1968, James Ward* 15, Herb Gore 15, Erma Jean Loveland 14, and Henry Terrill 14. There has been a very good representation from each of our colleges at all conferences, despite many college calendar interruptions.

Since Winnie Bell was writing the history, Erma Jean Loveland agreed to write a history of the Restoration Serials Index, make a list of periodicals indexed by RSI from 1947 to 2002, and make a list of Restoration Serials Index board and indexers 1973-2002. Erma Jean has also proof read and made suggestions for improvement of the history.

HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LIBRARIANS

1968 PRELUDE Yes, as early as 1968 librarians were expressing their dream of the future of cooperation among our Christian college librarians. In the January 13, 1969 issue of the Oklahoma Christian page 6 is recorded that for the first time in the history of Christian education the librarians from our Christian colleges met for a luncheon to talk of mutual problems while at a conference of the South West Library Association in 1968. Dr. Ed Holley, Texas Library Association President in 1971, was present at the luncheon and encouraged us to work together for the common good. This meeting was arranged by Mrs. Oma Carter, library consultant servicing Southwestern Christian College at Terrell, Texas. The meeting was well worth the effort and it was hoped a similar meeting could be held in future years.

In 1974 Dr. Bailey McBride, Academic Dean of Oklahoma Christian College, came up with the idea, and the librarians from OCC encouraged him, of inviting all of the Christian college librarians, to meet at the Oklahoma campus for the first Christian college librarians meeting. Library faculty and staff of OCC included Malcolm Hinckley, Suzy Simpson, Sandra Ewer, Les Lauen, Ruth Ann McClellan, Marilyn Bailey, and Cathy Rogers. Thus he was the instigator of an historic event that began cooperation among our librarians for the next 30 years and beyond.

Since this was the first meeting of the Christian College Librarians (CCL) many future plans are mentioned in the 1974 meeting minutes. We felt that an inclusion of the minutes would be of interest to future librarians in our Christian colleges.

Minutes of 1974 Meeting

The first organizational meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by Ernest Laseter, LCC. It was agreed that Ernest Laseter act as our first chairman through these meetings. The first order of business was to decide if the organization should meet annually, bi-annually, etc. It was agreed to meet annually. ACC offered to be host of the 1975 Christian College Librarians meeting. A motion was made, seconded and carried.

Some topics for future discussion were brought up: cooperative projects which included problems in technical processes; a standardized list of subject headings in the religious area; standardized indexing in the religious area; cooperative acquisitions; lectureship materials are a problem as it is difficult to find out who publishes and who does not; the need for bibliographies of restoration libraries; the possibility of having a less strict inter-library loan code; and publications of brotherhood material which are difficult to acquire. Ernest Laseter, LCC, described briefly the work being done with the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) and how it benefits us. It was suggested that some of these items could be given to small committee groups for research. The groups could then report their findings to the libraries for discussion and possible action.

3 Ernest Laseter, LCC, mentioned the fact that there is no complete list of Christian College Libraries and Librarians. Librarians from LCC handed out forms to each Christian college library represented in order to facilitate compiling such a list. Besides the name of the school, the library, address, phone number, etc., the form also called for a list of professional and para- professional persons employed by the library. Libraries were also requested to list their regular term library hours.

In the afternoon session Callie Faye Milliken, ACC, talked on “Cooperative Projects: brotherhood serials; brotherhood periodicals index.” Miss Milliken emphasized that we need to know what we have, collectively and individually, in reference, journals, etc. The need for a union list of religious periodicals was discussed and all were in agreement on the idea. She explained what has already been done in the area of indexing these periodicals and handed out articles and copies of subject heading lists that we might begin with. Included in these hand-outs was the result of the periodicals questionnaire sent by Miss Milliken to each Christian college library. After much discussion, it was decided that we begin with compiling a union list of brotherhood periodicals. Each library will use the form Milliken furnished in reporting to her the list of holdings in that library. It was also decided that for now, we will withhold working on indexing our periodicals as it will require a great deal of pre-planning, not to mention expense.

After dinner Dr. Bailey McBride, OCC, gave a tour of OCC’s Learning Center (a premier computer based facility, taking the space of a large room. Every student could access this computer from a study carrel).

May 11 9:00 a.m.: Miss Annie Mae Alston and Mr. Don Meredith (both of Harding Graduate School), spoke on “Out-of-print Religious Materials”, and furnished sources for acquiring out- of-print books.

4 In the final session at 10:30 a.m. discussions took place about furnishing copies of ACC holdings, duplicate exchange of periodicals, the Information Design 201 microfilm reader, the union list form from ACC; what to do about subject headings in the religious area, and what has been done.

It was suggested that Miss Millikin send two or three possible dates for the 1975 meeting so that the other librarians could choose which date would be most convenient. It was also suggested that these dates be sent within the next month due to the colleges scheduling their calendars for the 1974-75 school year. Harding College was chosen to be the host for 1976.

Some bright young librarians decided to fly into Abilene for the 1975 meeting, among them were Annie Mae Alston, Harding Graduate School, Elizabeth Dykes, Winnie Bell, and Shirley Birdsall (taking the picture) Harding, Don Meredith of Harding Graduate School, and pilot Don Smith, working on plane. Great idea, except on the way home we had to land in Ada, Oklahoma. One engine of our twin engine plane went out; and our pilot explained, after we landed, that landing as soon as possible was necessary because if the other engine went out we would descend at a 90 degree angle. We flew the rest of the way in a car.

The 1975 meeting began with informal reports from participating libraries of activities within each library. R. L. Roberts, Jr. of Abilene gave a progress report on the Union List of Brotherhood Serials.

Three discussion groups on the following proposals were held as follows: 1. Proposed indexing of brotherhood journals. Leader: R. L. Roberts, Jr., ACU 5 At this meeting a proposal was made that we start the index with volunteers doing the indexing beginning with Jan-March, 1974 as a pilot project. 2. Oral history Leader: Charles V. Baucom, York College 3. Interlibrary cooperation Leader: Dot Moore, Pepperdine University

These groups then reported to the entire business session in a later meeting.

Malcolm Hinckley of Oklahoma Christian College led a discussion of organizational plans of which the following were agreed upon. It was the majority preference that the informal structures prevail. No appointment of officers and chairmen as a structured group. It would be left up to the host institution to appoint committees necessary for future meetings. One of the duties of the hosting institution would be to appoint a recorder for the meetings. There should be someone in each group meeting to record the minutes and give to the head (?) Recorder, who would in turn give a copy to each of the schools. This would be especially helpful to the new host institution for help in planning future programs.

Annie Mae Alston, Harding Graduate School, discussed possible future activities and programs for the future meetings of our group.

Interesting sessions during our conference consisted of Mr. Forrest McCann, ACC Professor speaking on “Hymnals of the Restoration Movement” at a dinner hosted by President and Mrs. John Stevens. Entertainment also included vocal selections by Linda Warr, accompanist Joann Boyd, and interpretative readings by Mark Loudermilk.

In 1976 the Association met at Harding College in Searcy, with the program being planned jointly with Harding Graduate School of Religion of Memphis. To keep all librarians informed about what was going on in each college, reports were made by each library of happenings since the last meeting.

R. L. Roberts of Abilene Christian University reviewed progress being made with the Union List of Restoration Periodicals and the Union Mission List, giving each library the latest edition of these lists and calling for any recommendations for improvement of the list. Annie Mae Alston and Don Meredith of Harding Graduate School of Religion had attended the ATLA conference and reported on the response received from members of the Disciples and Christian Church affiliation groups. Many of these people indicated that they would like to participate in the Union List. Among those indicating interest in participating in the list were Lexington Theological, Phillips University, and Cincinnati Bible College. It was agreed among Christian College Librarians that it would be well to include all groups, within the Restoration Movement, who would like to be included in the list. Dr. Humble, who teaches at ACU, thinks this is the only list of holdings of Restoration periodicals produced among Churches of Christ and other groups in the Restoration Movement, and that it should be published. Plans were made for all libraries in our group to participate in this list.

The latest computer print-out of the Index to Religious Periodicals, as of May 5, 1976, and a copy of the complete religious periodical subject listings as of the same date were distributed by 6 ACU. This is considered a complete pilot index for one quarter of the year 1974 to the periodicals which were indexed. The Index was produced by the ACU Computer Center. Much discussion took place about specifications and about what type of index would be most useful, using indexes such as: Christian Standard, Christian Evangelist, and the ATLA Index for comparison. It was the consensus of opinion that we need to index the kind of material that we want our students to use, material published by men and women in the brotherhood. In choosing the titles to be indexed it was agreed that even if we do not agree with the viewpoint of a periodical, it should be included for the controversial viewpoint. A deadline date of February 1, 1977 was set for each librarian to turn in the indexing on the title they have agreed to index for the year 1975.

The ten titles chosen:

Annie Mae Alston reminded each librarian of the request that each college provide a bibliographic listing of their own lectureships, in order that every other college be aware of what has been done in all colleges.

Dot Moore of Pepperdine University Library extended an invitation to the group to meet on their campus in 1977 and the invitation was accepted.

From the program schedule for the CCL conference in 1977 at Pepperdine University you will find that the various library reports, from each school, were given at a devotional on May 27. Following this we had a lecture on “Understanding the New Copyright Law” from Mike O’Neal, Pepperdine University Legal Counsel. On January 1, 1978 new copyright laws will go into effect and librarians should be aware of the changes that will be necessary. An outdoor luncheon by the beautiful Malibu beach at the Beach House of Dr. Norvel Young and Helen was enjoyed by all. He spoke on “Poison Stress”. In the afternoon John Kossey of Ambassador College in Pasadena spoke on an approach to “Collection Development” with the use of the history tape produced by the OCLC system. Then we had Fran Adams and Herbert Gore of Pepperdine speaking on the topic “A Managerial Modem for Moderns”. In the evening Dr. and Mrs. William Banowsky were our hosts for dinner where he spoke briefly before a dramatic presentation and music.

May 28 a program was presented on “Responsibilities of Faculty Status” by a panel consisting of Gary Duke, Annie Mae Alston, Charles Baucom, and Winnie Bell. No matter what “status” we have, we all realize that it is the proficiency of our performance and the quality of our services that really make the difference. Afterward we had a project workshop with Callie Faye Milliken of ACU as the coordinator. A copy of the 1975 Index for Selected Religious Periodicals was distributed to all schools attending (to be mailed to those not present). Also a copy is to be mailed to the editor of each periodical indexed, along with a letter of explanation and proposed plan for the future. Miss Milliken informed us that there were 2400 entries of the 7 13 chosen periodical titles for the year 1975. She also mentioned some projects for the future (1) Union list of microform materials and (2) Oral history of the colleges and the Churches of Christ. In the discussion it was mentioned how difficult it was to acquire lectureship publications from the individual colleges. Following the discussion, it was decided that each college librarian is responsible to send information to the others as to when and how to order their lectureship publications each year.

Marsha Harper and R. L. Roberts presented a workshop showing all the members how the indexing of periodicals is done with the computerized system.

Marsha Harper, R. L. Roberts, and Callie Faye Milliken, Committee on Indexing, discussed some new titles to be added to the list of those indexed and made a list of possible new indexers who could be contacted with indexing information and inquiries about the possibility of them becoming indexers.

We had a Dutch treat lunch on our way to Huntington Library, Galleries and Gardens, a highlight for all conference participants. Oh those Los Angeles drivers with Jack in the Box hamburger in hand and coke in the holder!

A LITTLE NIGHTMARE?

In January 1978 we were informed by our local administrations that the decision had been made at the recent meeting of Christian college presidents to restrict meetings of groups such as ours (librarians, deans, etc.) to a biennial basis. Then in February 1979 the Christian college presidents made the decision that the meetings of librarians would be discontinued. Apparently this was prompted by the difficulty in financing travel expenses, etc. for such meetings. It was suggested by James E. Ward of David Lipscomb College that each library director speak directly with their presidents concerning the importance of such projects as the Union List of Restoration Periodicals in Christian College Libraries and the Subject Index for Selected Religious Periodicals, to see if a satisfactory way could be arranged for this work to be accomplished. Most librarians went to their presidents with the latest Index in hand and the Union List of Brotherhood Periodicals. In Winnie Bell’s case, she found Dr. Cliff Ganus, Harding College president, very interested. He took the index, flipped over to see what J. D. Bales had written. Of course, she explained CCL would be covering more titles as soon as it could. Yes, he was convinced that we had a real reason to meet and continue to dream.

In May 1979 Brenda Bryant, Director of Resources Center at ACU in Dallas wrote to all librarians concerning the American Library Association Conference in Dallas, June 23-29. She said that Kenneth Roach of ACU Library had suggested we get together at the conference to meet and discuss the indexing project. Arrangements would be made for Christian College librarians to sit together at the Inaugural banquet, and transportation was provided to meet at the ACU-Dallas campus on June 24 from 3-5 p.m.

At ACU-Dallas conference, announcement was made that a three-year cumulation of the Index for Selected Christian Periodicals should be out by the fall semester, and the 1977 index should be out soon. A new three-year subject heading list was given to each indexer to be used in future 8 indexing. ACU librarians told us that the index is slow in coming out because it is low priority in the ACU Computing Department since it is not an income-generating item.

It was voted to select an Editorial Board, with members from ACU and members at large to make decisions about each library paying for production costs, decisions about cumulations and date of projected publication and any other business problems which may arise in keeping the index as up to date as possible. It was the consensus of opinion that Christian College librarians should continue to meet for cooperative purposes at least every two years, and that an attempt would be made to get the approval of the presidents of our colleges for this to take place. Very few of the Christian schools allow their librarians to attend the national convention every year.

York College was host to the 1980 Christian College Librarians Conference May 29-30 with Charles Van Baucom, presiding. At this meeting, Kenneth Roach (ACU) invited all of the Christian College librarians to the 1981 National Christian Educators meeting to be held at Abilene Christian University in July.

CCLI celebrated a landmark publishing event: The CCL Index for Selected Religious Periodicals, 1975-77 was ready for each library.

Arrangements were made for the compilation of a List of Mission Materials to be made so that each institution would know what was available at other colleges. R. L. Roberts consented to do the compilation as lists were sent from each college. At the same time we should update the List of Reformation Materials by sending this information on the same type of form. Also, at this time it was decided to have each college index the bound or tape copies of their lectureship programs to become a part of a lecture index. Each library was asked to send a copy of the printed program from each lectureship so all would know what is available in each library. Annie May Alston Lewis was selected to set up the format and coordinate the lectureship index, consisting of a list of subjects and separate list of speakers.

A move was made and passed that the person in charge of hosting the next conference be the chairman for that period, rather than electing officers each time.

In June, 1981 Editorial Committee consisting of: Marsha Harper, R. L. Roberts, Kenneth Roach and Callie Faye Milliken, met to make plans for the publication of the 1979, 1980, and 3 year cumulation of The CCL Index for Selected Periodicals, hoping to speed up progress of these volumes to be ready for the CCLI meeting at the National Christian Education Conference July 17-19, 1981.

At the National Christian Education Conference in 1981 there was a special session about the Christian College Librarians Index and a further outlining of procedures to be used. Another session was devoted to retrospective indexing of brotherhood journals and a computerized indexing experience in the ACU Computer Lab, conducted by Dr. William Poucher of ACU. After preliminary explanation on use of computer terminal, indexers were assigned to terminals, two by two, and began to compile index information on discs, where it can be transferred to magnetic tape for use.

9 A second three-year cumulation, 1978-80 of The CCL Index for Selected Periodicals, was presented to the group and each college took a copy home. Several new indexers were recruited and new periodicals will be indexed by them as follows: RESTORATION REVIEW - Mark Tucker CHRISTIAN FAMILY - Joe McReynolds VOICE OF FREEDOM - Annette Cates SOUND DOCTRINE - Martha J. Smith

On behalf of the Editorial Committee, Callie Faye Milliken commended Board members at large, Charles Baucom and Annie Mae Lewis, for their assistance and their willingness to help.

The Editorial Committee met on August 6, 1981 to make decisions on procedure. The need has long been felt for a concise statement of purpose of the group. Marsha Harper was asked to enlarge the statement in the foreword of the Index in accordance with statements made from time to time. A copy of that statement is being sent to each Committee member for approval, rejection, or changes. Also guidelines for inclusion of a periodical title have been revised and the committee would appreciate a vote from each member on this. The index now carries 20 titles.

The new 1981 CCL Index for Selected Periodicals was passed out to all libraries represented at the 1982 Conference at David Lipscomb College by Callie Faye Milliken with her congratulations and thanks to the group. It included indexing for 24 periodicals and 7 Lectureship books. The work was done by 28 indexers and editors. Ten additional copies of the three-year 1975-77 edition are being computer run and are being sold for $35, while $20 is being asked for the annual edition. The board has $455 in hand, and $135 is outstanding. CCL membership approved the Executive Committee using the funds to reimburse actual costs of binding and mailing at their discretion.

Some time was spent discussing the offer of Mike Willis, editor of Gospel Guardian, one of our indexed periodicals, to index the title for us. There was some concern about adding someone, not a librarian nor a member of our group, but the group voted to accept his offer if he were willing to train and to accept the guidelines, with the understanding that the material would not be used if it did not conform.

The Executive Committee presented a resolution to the group asking for the Board of Directors to be enlarged and strengthened:

1. That the CCLI Board of Directors be increased from two to four members from outside Abilene. Members will be expected to meet at least once per year and be available for consultation by mail or telephone as needed.

2. That two Board members be elected or re-elected at each biennial meeting to serve four-year terms of office.

3. That the Board be empowered to disburse funds accruing from the sale of the Index and the Union List

10 This resolution was approved, and Winnie Bell and James Ward were elected to join Charles Baucom and Annie Mae Lewis, as non-Abilene members, and R. L. Roberts, Marsha Harper, Kenneth Roach and Callie Faye Milliken, ACU editors and directors. Callie Faye Milliken asked that everybody talk with the Board and give them their ideas and suggestions. The project belongs to everyone, and one of the joys has been the cooperative work, association, and harmony among librarians.

1982 Conference at Lipscomb: At Seven Hills with Don Meredith, Carolyn Wilson, Annie Mae Alston, Myrna Perry, Joe McReynolds, Bonnie Baker, Mary Lynn McInteer

Among suggestions were some projects that need further study:

1. Completion of all segments and added titles, 1975- 2. Retrospective Indexing 3. Advertising and marketing 4. Need for terminal and printer 5. Format of volume when printed 6. Union List of Serials update 7. Subject heading list

R. L. Roberts met with about 20 indexers and interested participants for a question and answer period on subject headings and a discussion of computer format requirements. Forms should be done by hand, observing the spaces on the form, or the work has to be done over to be sure it fits, that Subject Headings should be used as they appear in the List of Subject Headings or confirm in ATLA Index and mark to show source. The new cumulated 6-year List of Subject Headings was handed out to the group.

R. L. Roberts distributed an updated Union List of Periodicals to be used as a reference source, and as a working tool for updating holdings.

11 During the conference participants were treated to a dinner with President and Mrs. Willard Collins in which Jim Bill McInteer was the after dinner speaker; and we were entertained by singer Marion Cawood. We also had the opportunity to tour the Disciples of Christ Historical Society with David McWhirter as our guide. During the conference we had the pleasure of hearing Lewis S. Maiden speak on “Earnest Contenders: Debaters and Debates of the Early 20th Century”.

In 1984 the CCL Conference was held at Alabama Christian College in Montgomery, Alabama. Kenneth Roach opened the meeting and the following list of motions, proposed by the CCLI Board, was discussed and adopted by the membership.

1. That retrospective indexing of all current titles (journals & lectureships), 1974-1983, be accomplished by the time of our meeting in 1986.

2. That Don Meredith get full details on microfilming religious theses and dissertations from TREN and share further information with all interested institutions.

3. That schools interested in the Guide to Archives, Manuscripts, and Special Materials be encouraged to send information to Callie Faye Milliken.

4. That, beginning with the 1984 volume, all institutions pay for their copies of the Index according to the following price schedule:

5. That the format of the Index be changed to Subject Main Entry with separate Author/Subject list.

7. That 20th Century Christian and Teenage Christian be selectively indexed.

8. That all indexing be more selective, with emphasis on quality, length, and treatment of subject.

9. That Kenneth Roach arrange for printing of the Index, using CCL funds as needed.

10. That a name change be considered and that suggestions be turned in to the Board before we leave Montgomery. 12

11. That effort be made to work out a format for including Lectureships that are available only on cassette - other cassette materials to be considered in the future.

All the motions were voted on individually and passed with a majority vote.

The Nominating Committee composed of James Ward, Chairman; Winnie Bell; and Kenneth Roach presented its report. Nominees for the two board positions were: Charles Baucom and Don Meredith. They were elected by acclamation.

Thomas Weaver and Annie Mae Lewis were presented with adopted resolutions upon their retirement.

An invitation from Griffin Copeland to have the CCL Conference at Florida College in 1986 was accepted by the membership.

All participants were treated to a bus tour of Historic Montgomery, ending at the Archives and History Building with a tour and lecture on “Libraries and Archives” by Dr. Edwin C. Bridges, Director. Another pleasure was the dinner with Dr. Ernest Clevenger, Jr., President of Alabama Christian College. Speakers for this occasion were W. B. West on “Bring the Books and the Parchments”, and R. L. Roberts, Archivist, ACU on “The New Center for Restoration Studies”.

In 1986 at Florida College discussions and presentations from various colleges took place concerning the use of computers in our libraries, and on Restoration Collections in various libraries, including the Center for Restoration Studies at ACU which was led by R. L. Roberts. He also showed us a film on “History of the Churches of Christ”.

From the minutes of the Indexing Meeting we found that with the presentation of the 1985 index to the group completed eleven years of indexing. Congratulations to all librarians and indexers were given. The 1985 volume contains 25 periodical titles, 11 lectureships and scholars conferences. It was compiled by 30 indexers from 14 institutions. This is great progress since the possibility of such a cooperative project was first discussed at the Christian College Librarians’ Conference in 1974.

A nominating committee presented the names of Winnie Bell and Griffin Copeland to serve four year terms on the Board. One of the accomplishments of the index project was the availability in 1984 of a print copy, which eliminated the computer carbon copy and made for a quality product. Marketing of this product was considered and advertising in journals and mail outs to other religious colleges and universities will be used as avenues of marketing.

Retirements of Delno Roberts, ACU Librarian for Public Services, and Ludene Slatton, Documents Librarian at ACU, were noted and recognized for their work at ACU and with the Index. At the luncheon Bob F. Owen, Florida College President, recognized Griffin Copeland and read a resolution on the occasion of his retirement.

New titles to be included in the 1986 index are: Does God Exist 13 Campus Journal Searching the Scriptures Christianity

After much discussion and consideration of possible name changes for the Index, the motion was made that the name be changed to Index to Restoration Serials. This name was unanimously adopted by the board. However when this was presented to the membership, it was defeated by a vote of 11 to 14. After considerable discussion centering on meaning and use of the term “Restoration” and the catalog disadvantages of “Index” as a beginning word, the motion was made by Bob Brown and seconded by Shirley Alexander that the index be called Restoration Serials Index. The motion carried by an 18 to 8 vote.

PURPOSE STATEMENT FOR RSI INDEX

The purpose of the RSI index is three-fold. First, it exists to provide access to periodical literature produced by members of the Churches of Christ. In addition, the indexers hope it will assist and stimulate scholarly research and publication on all aspects of the American Restoration Movement. Finally, it is designed to reflect a broad spectrum of thought within our brotherhood and thus to facilitate communication on matters of common concern. Perhaps it may also serve the needs of others who have an interest in what members of the Churches of Christ are thinking and saying.

Copies of the revised edition of A Guide to Selected Archive/Manuscript/ Special Collections Holdings in Abilene Christian University Library, David Lipscomb College Library, Freed- Hardeman College Library, Great Lakes Christian College Library, Harding University Library, and York College Library were handed out to each institution. This compilation, participated in by only seven institutions, has the potential of being one of the most important activities of this group. The need to make materials known and the growing use of these items will increase need for this kind of finding device.

One very interesting portion of our trip to Florida College was a bus trip to Tampa and Tarpon Springs and the Greek Village. A trip to Florida calls for some sightseeing.

The 1988 CCL Conference at Freed-Hardeman College began with a report of the RSI board meeting. A new format has been used with RSI 1984-86 and with RSI 1987. Eventually all volumes will be in the new format. RSI 1981-83 will be the next cumulation using the new format. All indexers are requested to send in any indexing missing from 1981-83 on the title they are indexing. A financial report indicated assets of $2,198 and expenses of $2,319.92. ACU Press will market RSI. The board felt the general meeting should consider raising the price of the volumes. A recommendation was $75 for 3 year volumes and $45 for one year volumes, with appropriate discount for indexers. A motion was made, seconded, and carried to raise the price of the 3 year volumes to $75 and one year volumes to $47.50 with a discount to libraries participating in indexing to $40 and $25, and non-participating in indexing to $50 and $35. Henry Terrill asked that a copyright be obtained for the Index. Marsha Harper said it would require research to see if Christian College Librarians would need to be a formal organization with bylaws and officers. A copyright will be obtained if possible. 14 Don Meredith’s survey of periodicals subscribed to by Christian College Libraries indicates that many of the titles RSI indexes are not subscribed to by our libraries.

The Nominating Committee, chaired by James Ward, nominated Harold Holland, Pepperdine and Jane Miller, Freed-Hardeman for the term of 1988-1992. Other elected members of the board are Griffin Copeland and Winnie Bell, serving 1986-1990. Motion to accept the slate of officers was made, and carried by acclamation. Harold Holland extended an invitation to the CCL for the conference to be held at Pepperdine University in 1990, which was accepted.

1988 Conference at Freed-Hardeman: Hagy’s Catfish Hotel Dinner

History buffs were in for a treat by our trip to the Shiloh National Park and a stop at Hagy’s Catfish Hotel for some of their famous food. There was always time for some fun with our meetings, and what pleases us more than eating?

In the April 1, 1990 Gospel Advocate page 45 an article written by Marsha Harper was published. This was a very descriptive outline of just what the Restoration Serials Index can do for the researcher needing information about issues among Churches of Christ. This article has been reproduced on the following pages.

The Executive Board of RSI met April 26, 1989, and again May 3, 1990 with the express purpose of marketing the RSI Index, with the assistance of Tommy Spain, ACU Press marketing. Means were explored to get to a potential market of Christian colleges, churches, ministers, schools of preaching, and independent Christian churches of the current one-year index, back issues of three-year cumulations and individual title indexes. Tommy Spain recommended these steps to market the Index: 1. Design a brochure with order blank 2. Develop a mailing list 3. Take out ads in the Christian Journals, and in independent Christian church publications. 4. Set up booths at lectureships 5. Send brochures with those traveling for the schools.

In the 1990 conference in Los Angeles, Pepperdine University’s new Library Director, Dr. Joseph McDonald, spoke to the group on “New Directions in Academic Libraries”. His thrust was to the point that librarians should concentrate on the contents of the book rather than just the outside processing. Librarians should concentrate on learning as a faculty want the librarians to form a real partnership. Access rather than ownership should be our goal since no library can 17 own it all. Herb Gore reported on a meeting he attended about the future of libraries. It was suggested that we blend in the new with the old as the budget will allow. The library should be the central repository of all electronic information which is available university wide. Librarians will need to acquire computer skills to keep up with high school students coming to us.

All libraries reported on their progress toward becoming automated. Pepperdine began their process on VTLS in 1984 on an IBM 4381 main frame system. It took them three years to get started. They recommended PCs rather than dumb terminals, especially in work offices. They are in a consortium with 11 private colleges for tape loaded indexing and can modem access these holdings.

Winnie Bell and Anne Early Frazier were presented with “Resolutions Upon Their Retirement”.

Winnie Bell agreed to give some time to bringing up to date the periodicals now in Restorations Serials Index which have skips in them through the years, working in three-year increments, as they are reprinted. She also agreed to bring the publication Guide to Selected Archive/Manuscript/Special Collections in Christian College Libraries up to date.

The nominating Committee, consisting of Henry Terrill, Erma Jean Loveland, and Anne Frazier, presented Myrna Perry and Winnie Bell to be considered for Editorial Board positions for the next 4 years and they were accepted.

Marsha Harper moved that Christian College Librarians be organized into a formal organization with officers and bylaws. Madeleine Showalter seconded the motion and it was passed by unanimous vote. A task force volunteered and appointed were: Marsha Harper, Abilene; Suzanne Spurrier, Harding, Searcy; and Marie Byers, David Lipscomb. Their charge was to select the name of the organization, to write bylaws for Christian College Librarians, contact Christian Colleges and Schools of Preaching by mail with the bylaws and ballots for voting. The task force was to make a presentation on the 1992 CCL program.

A new Nominating Committee, Charles Baucom, Lilah Gainey Dodson, and Bonnie Baker selected the board members in 1992, and also selected officers for the new organization of Christian College Librarians. This seemed necessary since it was decided for CCL to organize in a more formal way to relieve the host college of the entire responsibility of a meeting.

While at Pepperdine we heard Richard Hughes, Pepperdine Professor on the topic “The Strange New World of Churches of Christ” and Associate Dean of Seaver College Dwayne Van Rheenen on the topic “Searching and Re-searching: The Restoration Communication Project”. There was also the opportunity to take a bus trip and tour of the J. Paul Getty Museum. This was a new experience for most of us.

In 1990 CCL voted to form an organization of Christian College Librarians. The By-Laws Committee included: Suzanne Spurrier, Marie Byers, and Marsha Harper. Marsha Harper made the presentation of their recommendations at the May 22, 1992 meeting at Harding University. The following version was adopted following parliamentary procedures, including the discussion and vote on each section:

18 CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LIBRARIANS BY-LAWS

Article 1 - Name The name of this organization shall be “Christian College Librarians”. Article II - Purpose Section A The purpose of the organization shall be: (1) to engage in cooperative projects, such as Restorations Serials Index, That will enhance the services offered by Christian college libraries; (2) to facilitate communication and resource sharing among Christian college libraries. Section B This organization shall at all times cooperate with the administrations of the Christian colleges. Article III - Membership Any person interested in furthering the work of the Christian college libraries shall be admitted to membership upon payment of dues to the Secretary-Treasurer. Article IV - Dues Dues shall be assessed, the amount to be recommended by the Executive Committee and approved by the membership, and shall be payable at each regular membership meeting. Article V - Officers Section A Officers shall consist of a President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer. These officers and the immediate past President shall comprise the Executive Committee. Section B - Elections Officers shall be nominated at least two months before each membership meeting by a committee appointed by the President. Additional nominations may be accepted from the floor. Election shall be by majority vote taken during the membership meeting. Section C - Terms of office Terms of office are for two years, beginning immediately after the membership meeting at which the election is held. Officers may serve two successive terms but may not serve a third term until at least one term of office has intervened. Section D - Vacancies If the office of President becomes vacant, the Vice-President shall become President. If other vacancies occur, the President shall fill them by appointment. Appointees shall serve until the next scheduled election. Article VI - Duties of officers Section A The President shall preside at all meetings, appoint committees except for the Editorial Board of Restoration Serials Index, and carry on any other duties connected with the office. Section B The Vice-President shall assist the President in carrying out the duties of the office and shall preside at meetings in the President’s absence. Section C 19 The Secretary-Treasurer shall record minutes of the meetings and distribute them to the membership, collect dues and keep financial records, and perform other duties customarily associated with this office. Section D The Executive Committee shall meet prior to each membership meeting and conduct such business as may be required. A full report of the meeting shall then be rendered to the membership. Article VII - Meetings Section A A place for the next meeting shall be set at each regular membership meeting. Section B The dates for each meeting will be set by the host institution in consultation with the members. Section C The cost of meetings shall be borne by the attendees, as assessed by the host institution. Article VIII - Restoration Serials Index Section A - Membership The Editorial Board of Restoration Serials Index (RSI) shall consist of up to four Index editors appointed by Abilene Christian University Library and four other members who are not employees of ACU. Section B - Election The non-ACU Board Members shall be nominated by the Christian College Librarians Nominations Committee and elected at regular Christian College Librarians membership meetings. Board members serve four-year terms. Terms are staggered so that two new members are chosen at each Christian College Librarians membership meeting. Section C - Meetings The Restoration Serials Index Editorial Board shall meet annually to make editorial decisions and conduct the business affairs of the Index. Reports shall be made to Christian College librarians at each membership meeting. Section D - Officers The Restoration Serials Index Editorial Board Chairman and Secretary shall be indexers from Abilene Christian University. They shall be selected by the ACU library. Article IX - Amendments The By-laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members present or by a two-thirds vote of members by mail.

The above By-laws were approved by a majority vote by the membership present.

As chairman of the Nominating Committee, Charles Baucom gave the following slate of nominees: President of CCL, Winnie Bell, Vice President, Craig Beard, Secretary-Treasurer, Jan Sharp, RSI Board Members, Jane Miller and Griffin Copeland. The slate was accepted unanimously. Other members of the nominating committee were Bonnie Baker and Lilah Gainey.

1992 Conference at Harding University: RSI Executive Board--Janie Miller, Marsha Harper, Winnie Bell, Erma Jean Loveland, Myrna Perry

A report from the Restoration Serials Index Board Meeting included Erma Jean Loveland’s financial statement presentation showing that total revenue stands at $2,147.50 with expenses at $904.73. Members of the Board noted quite a few institutions that were not associated with our group among subscribers. One of the most unusual subscribers was EBSCO. A request from a church in Ireland for the index to be used in their study was filled by sending one copy of a year, not likely to be needed, with a request to pass it on to a library that might find it useful. There was also a request from the Disciples of Christ Historical Society for a free copy which was granted since we do not contribute to their establishment and we have quite a few of our brethren doing research among their holdings.

The newly printed Subject Heading Listing was passed out to board members and it was decided that it was a very workable subject heading list. The decision was made that we would no longer include the city or town on subject headings in various states, but indexers are to make sure it is included in the title, or added in parentheses.

A handout was given to each one with “Steps to enter RSI Entries on PC using Notebook (Office3.0) and WordPerfect 5.1" with instructions for mailing these to Abilene for inclusion in the index.

The entire database was now on tape format and a decision to offer the full tape covering 1974- 1991 for a price of $250 for the first tape, with the provision that the institution also continue to subscribe to the printed copy, was made. This would mean that when you pay for 1992 you would also pay an extra $25 for an internet update to your tape, along with your $35 for the annual paper copy.

21 The Board has decided to award authors for the “Best Article of the Year” written in one of our periodicals. These could be in the form of a nice framed certificate in the following categories: Best Inspiration article, Best Textual or Scholarly article, and Best Social/Religious Issue article. Nominations for these awards would come from indexers. A form is provided for nominations and these should go to Erma Jean Loveland, who will assemble and get them to the judges. Judges are to be nominated by this group.

Erma Jean Loveland gave an online demonstration of the RSI database held in a DEC VAX at ACU via a telephone connection with the Harding Computer Systems. Tours of Brackett Library with demonstrations of Online System by Mary Binkley were given to participants.

CCL voted to meet on an annual basis, after some discussion.

1993 Conference at ACU: Henry Terrill and Craig Beard looking on with mischief

Sales of RSI have increased to the point that there are enough funds to print a revision of the 1978-80 RSI reports Marsha Harper of the Restoration Serials Index Board, at the 1993 conference at Abilene Christian University. Also, the Board advises that advertising for the RSI will continue in Gospel Advocate, Christian Chronicle, and Christian Librarian. Indexing on diskette is transferring very successfully. The Board also voted on two new titles to be indexed. They are Discipliana and Contending for the Faith.

At the suggestion of the ACU Center for Administrative Computing, a licensing agreement has been drawn up for the use of the RSI when the computer tape is sent to other libraries. Use of the tape is under the supervision of the RSI Board, and the ACU Center for Administrative Computing is not liable for the performance of the tape product. License will be granted only to those customers who have purchased the printed copy of RSI.

22 No nominees were received for “Best Article Awards” for the 1992-93 year. New criteria were distributed, and Marsha Harper urged everyone to respond and to solicit help from faculty members. Craig Churchill of ACU was chosen to be project director of this undertaking.

The By-laws amendments from May, 1992 were approved by a 30-0 “yes” vote. The Executive Committee recommended annual dues of $5 to cover miscellaneous expenses and the members approved to assess $5 dues per member, to be paid by each June 30 for the following year.

The CCL group was asked to move on the proposal of Doug Foster for the formation of a national committee to gather and preserve materials of historic importance to the Churches of Christ. The CCL formally expressed interest and support for this project.

Don Meredith has agreed to undertake the job of updating the CCL Union list of Periodicals. Don also passed out a list of periodicals that are not cataloged on DCLC, so that all institutions can list their holdings and designate titles they will catalog on OCLC.

Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts (OCUSA) was the site of this 20th anniversary meeting. Marsha Harper of the Restoration Serials Index Board reported that the RSI will be loaded on the ACU Bible Department VAX and will be available on internet for the first time. Concerning “Best Article Awards” Marsha encouraged everyone to nominate articles and writers for these awards. The decision was made not to nominate lectureship articles, only articles written for publication.

Joanne Barclay’s son, Nathan, has made the RSI available on disk for use on personal computers.

Doug Foster, Carisse Berryhill, Brad Robison, Myrna Perry, and Erma Jean Loveland have been chosen for a committee to study the feasibility and develop guidelines for a Restoration Archives Consortium to coordinate efforts to acquire, preserve, and make available the records of the Churches of Christ.

A special resolution to honor Bonnie Walker upon her retirement from many years of service at Abilene Christian University was read. JoAnne Barclay and Bernice Weaver are also retiring from Faulkner University.

David Lipscomb University was host to CCL May 19, 1995. Craig Beard announced that dues will be $5 each for 1996 and should be paid to Marie Byers at David Lipscomb University. A committee of Marie Byers, Henry Terrill and Jan Sharp was selected by Craig Beard to study the issues of use of dues and present a proposal to the membership.

Another committee was appointed to study issues relating to charging/not charging member libraries for interlibrary loans, especially for copies from Restoration serials. Tamie Willis, Harold Tabor, Henry Terrill, and Marie Byers were asked to participate in the study.

Erma Jean Loveland announced that the RSI 1978-80 cumulative index and the 1994 index were available for pick up by each school at this meeting and billing would be sent later.

23 A demonstration of RSI on diskette, which was produced by Nathan Barclay at Southern Christian University, was done by Mark McCallon assisted by Erma Jean Loveland. This disk includes all indexing from 1974-1992 and may be purchased for $10.

There being no nominees for the “Best Article Award” during the past year it was assumed there was a lack of interest in this project and it was decided to table it at present.

Craig Beard opened the conference business meeting at Lubbock Christian College May 24, 1996 and arrangements were made to have the 1997 conference at Faulkner University and the 1998 conference at Pepperdine University. Marie Byers gave the financial report showing a balance of $1,215.18 and reported that a FEIN number had been secured for the association’s account. Tamie Willis reported on a survey sent to all CCL member libraries in which about half of the libraries agreed to lend free of charge. She made a motion that a policy be drafted and presented at the next meeting. The committee that worked on the survey was selected to work on the policy proposal. It consisted of Tamie Willis, Henry Terrill and Marie Byers.

New directories of the Christian College Librarians was presented and each institution was to pick up their own copy and sign the list provided.

Winnie Bell reported on the RSI Executive Board meeting in which the following were in attendance: Winnie Bell, Craig Churchill, Marsha Harper, Erma Jean Loveland, and Myrna Perry. A call for indexers was issued for retrospective indexing on Christian Echo, Campus Journal, Does God Exist?, Latin American Crier for 1984-1986. Volunteers were Herb Gore, Myrna Perry, and David Howard.

New titles added to the RSI by the executive board include the following: Magnolia Messenger to be indexed by Jim Womack Therefore Stand to be indexed by Virginia Oliver Truth for Today to be indexed by Marie Barber (Hope Shull’s mother) Inman Forum Lectures to be indexed by Allie Keller Wineskins to be indexed, including previous issues to 1996, by Craig Beard

Erma Jean Loveland raised the issue of making CCL a legal, non-profit organization which would serve as an umbrella entity for various projects such as RSI, the union list (serials), and the Restoration Archives Consortium. After discussion of various issues related to incorporation, Craig charged incoming officers, in cooperation with appropriate legal counsel, with the task of drafting a proposal.

The Nominating Committee presented the following slate of officers: President, Jim Ward Vice President, Mark McCallon Secretary/Treasurer, Carisse Berryhill This slate of officers were accepted unanimously. 24

Development of a homepage for CCL was discussed and it was suggested that a committee be formed to work on a proposal. Craig appointed the following committee for the coming year: Adam Booth, Ronnie Morgan, Terence Sheridan, Gary Oliver, and Craig Beard.

Erma Jean Loveland made a motion that the present committee working on the Restoration Archives Consortium be reappointed for one more year. At the next meeting a new board would be appointed with two members serving a two-year term and two members serving a four-year term. The motion passed. In a charge to the new officers, Craig urged them to consider the following issues: 1. Status of the Restoration Archives Consortium and formation of a board to direct its work 2. State which would be best for CCL incorporation 3. Other incorporation issues (i.e. costs, legalities) 4. Revision to by-laws 5. Methods for the appointment of committees

Nancy Kitchen forwarded a request from Jerry Rushford concerning the microfilming of Western Evangelist. She made a motion that CCL assist in the project. Brenda Turner amended the motion to say that Pepperdine would make arrangements for the production of the microfilm and Jerry Rushford’s research could go forward. Further consideration will be given to CCL’s participation in the project.

Jim Ward opened the May 30, 1997 business meeting at Faulkner University with expressions of appreciation to Brenda Turner and her staff for hosting this conference. Carisse Berryhill gave the financial report showing a balance of $1,354.56. Members were reminded that dues were $5. Craig Beard asked to be reimbursed for his costs for copying and mailing the directory. Mark McCallon suggested that CCL buy a copy of the next Union List of Restoration Serials for everyone. No date for the edition has been announced. The group approved Marsha Harper’s request to reimburse ACU for up to $700, the cost of converting the RSI database to a Windows format. Suzanne Spurrier’s suggestion that funds be used to set up a scholarship for a Christian library student each year was approved. Jim Ward will appoint a scholarship committee.

Tamie Willis presented a draft of ILL policy. It was accepted. Tamie will formulate a form for libraries to sign, retain the completed forms, and report to the group. Craig Beard reported on the development of a CCL website at Faulkner University. He also announced that the directories are ready to be picked up, one for each school.

Henry Terrill described the CCL-RSI listserve. Myrna Perry expressed special thanks for Henry’s work on this.

Don Meredith announced that he had brought diskettes for each library containing Restoration titles available from ATLA on microfiche. Don compiled a list by searching ATLA’s demonstration CD. Don also distributed forms for each library to use in updating its holdings in the Union List of Restoration Serials.

1997 Conference at Faulkner University: Suzanne Spurrier

With regard to the Restoration Archives Consortium, Marsha Harper’s motion was accepted that an institution be identified as the sponsoring body for Restoration Archives projects. After discussion ACU was noted as that institution and the following committee was appointed: Marsha Harper (chair), Myrna Perry, Dena LaHue, Carrise Berryhill, and Erma Jean Loveland. In the interest of time, reports from individual libraries were truncated. Harper suggested that they be put on the CCL listserve.

Herb Gore read the RSI Board minutes prepared by Winnie Bell. The board decided that each indexer should receive a free copy of the subject headings list for RSI. Others who want a list should pay $7.50 each. Board members have decided to trial-index the Campbell-Stone listserve.

Dr. Jim Ward introduced new members at the 1998 conference at Abilene Christian University, and gave special thanks to Marsha Harper and her staff. Dr. Ward welcomed Nancy Olson, librarian of Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, as a representative of the Association of Christian Librarians and of the Independent Christian Church Librarians, which meets annually in conjunction with ACL. She extended greetings and invitations to meet with them in 1998 at Taylor University, 1999 at Lee University, or 2000 in Point Loma, California.

Carisse Berryhill reported a financial balance of $1,519.68. Carisse and Marsha Harper reported on the activities of the Restoration Archives Committee. Marsha read the committee’s mission and membership statements. Dr. Berryhill described the goals of the committee and indicated that committee members are undertaking the following responsibilities: Carisse Berryhill, chair: Dena La Hue Luce, composing guide to archival collecting for CCL libraries: Craig Churchill, revising and compiling a finding list: publicity, Erma Jean Loveland and Marsha Harper: development of an assessment instrument, Marsha Harper.

Lewis Armstrong announced that the recipient of the 1998 scholarship for $250 is Melissa D. Johnson, who is currently working at ACU and will be attending the University of North Texas. A motion by Lewis Armstrong to increase the award next year to $350 was approved.

Tamie Willis reported that the ILL agreement is in place. Dr. Ward reported that our organization is not required to be incorporated in order to apply for 501 © 3 status. A motion that the incoming officers carry out the application for this status passed.

Tamie Willis reported on the meeting of the RSI Board. The current RSI balance is $1,291.56. The following indexed periodicals need new indexers: World Evangelism, Campus Crosswalk and Contending for the Faith. The 1975-77 retrospective index is getting underway. Criteria has been developed to index the Stone-Campbell listserve. Jim McMillan has agreed to serve as indexer.

Gary Oliver demonstrated the web version of the directory that he and Craig Beard have developed. Its URL is http://www.acu.edu/academics/library/ccl/ccld.html. Dr. Ward expressed everyone’s appreciation.

Erma Jean Loveland distributed the 1984-86 retrospective index. Bills will be mailed. Gary Oliver informed everyone that he will be traveling to Washington in June to begin NACO training.

President Henry Terrill, officiating at the 1999 business meeting May 25 at Harding University, reported that the Christian College Librarians Association application for 501 © 3 status has been filed and acknowledged as being received. Also noted by Terrill was that May, 1992 was the date listed because it was the date CCL began to be governed by a By-Laws document. Current place of corporation is Searcy, Arkansas.

Dena Luce reported that the recipient of the 1999 scholarship for $350 will be Barbara Kelly, who is currently working at Faulkner and will be attending the University of Alabama.

Brenda Turner reported on the meeting of the RSI Board. The current RSI balance is $3,292. Board members present were Marsha Harper, Don Haymes, Herb Gore, Brenda Turner, Craig Churchill, Tamie Willis and Erma Jean Loveland. Of the periodicals considered for indexing, continuance or addition it was decided to discontinue indexing Campus Crosswalk; Christian Journal will be indexed by Carisse Berryhill; Leaven will be indexed by Wade Osborn; Ensign will be indexed by Ed Barrels; Faith and Facts will be indexed by Terence Sheridan; Christian’s Expositor will be indexed by Terence Sheridan; Rocky Mountain Christian, will be selectively indexed by Henry Terrill; Carolina Christian will be selectively indexed by Gerald Cox.

Marsha Harper clarified that the new Author List contained more information on authors than is contained in the RSI database. It is to be used as a tool for indexers. She urged all indexers to send in as much information as could be found on authors so the best form of the name could be used.

To cover the shortfall of the RSI for 1999 all CCL member Institutions will be asked to contribute $25 to cover the deficit. Next year the lists will be available electronically and will not need to be printed in hard copy except for the institutions without electronic access to the Web.

Carisse Berryhill reported on the activities of the Restoration Archives Committee. After reviewing its mission, the committee drew up a draft list of sources of 20th century published and unpublished materials that CCL libraries should be positioned to collect: 1. The library’s own institution; 2. Regional Para church organizations; 3. Congregations; 4. Persons such as preachers and scholars; 5. Ephemeral materials and news clippings. The list will be further reviewed by the committee and distributed to all CCL libraries in the next few months.

President Terrill discussed the Amendment to the Constitution By-Laws that was sent out to the membership Nov. 18, 1998. The amendment passed with 40 members qualified to vote, 34 members voted for the amendment.

Marsha Harper shared information about a joint conference to be held by the Christian Colleges in August of 2000. For example the annual Deans Conference and the Admissions Conference 28 and others will meet together. ACU has been selected as the host and the event is slated to take place in Dallas, Texas.

Don Haymes gave a report on the Historical Index he has prepared. He would like the group’s support of this indexing project. He encouraged members to buy from ATLA the microfilm copies of periodicals that they do not have. A new filming of the Firm Foundation was discussed. The next project should be for someone to take the responsibility of collecting a good complete copy to be sent to a vendor for filming. David Howard volunteered to contact both Mr. Dobbs to gain permission to film and Mr. Pike who has microfilmed many materials of this type. David will work with the CCL Restoration Archives Committee on this project. Carisse Berryhill made a motion for Henry Terrill as President of CCL to draft a letter of cooperation with the CCL members of our joint interest in this project and that we endorse this indexing project. The motion carried.

Several Amendment Proposals to the By-Laws of CCL were made, discussed by the membership, and passed to become a part of the CCL By-Laws.

President Terrill brought a report from the Serials interest group that met on Monday. Four items were recommended for all members: 1. Catalog and enter their own school’s materials and publications in the OCLC database. 2. This should be at least OCLC minimal level cataloging, or better. 3. To accomplish this a possible serials cataloging workshop should be held at the next CCL meeting. 4. Don Meredith has agreed to prepare and enter records for several short runs listed on the Supplemental Union List of titles that he distributed to each institution.

Henry Terrill presided at the business meeting at the 2000 conference at Pepperdine University. Carisse Berryhill reported for the Restoration Archives Committee that two letters of support had been written on behalf of Don Haymes in his effort to retrieve past copies of the Firm Foundation. Jim Womack reported for the Scholarship Committee that the committee has selected Mr. John Wilson, a Freed-Hardeman University graduate, who will be attending the University of Alabama.

Brenda Turner reported on the meetings of the RSI Board, June 16-17, 2000. The financial statement showed a balance of $3,102.82, which included the $25 institution fee. ACU board members reported that the 1999 RSI was in the final stages of editing and should be in the hands of the printer by July 1.

With changes being made in the ACU Computer Department the Board convened electronically to discuss the future of RSI. It was recommended by the Board at that time that Marsha Harper contact with a consultant regarding our options. The consultant introduced Marsha and others at ACU to the Master Library software. Further investigation on this software regarding pricing structures, search engines, and hardware needs will be made. Board members were encouraged to download a demonstration from the website.

29 The benefits of sharing indexing data between ACL and CCL (CPI and RSI) were discussed and will be investigated further. Sharing data may also require additional editing of the thesaurus and the name authority file.

Marsha Harper gave a brief description of the status of the RSI database at ACU. Since the ACU programmers left the RSI project in midstream the database is in an unstable position. Consultant Dennis Reed suggested using the Balboa Software, Library Master System. There would be a yearly cost to each member institution of $200 to maintain the system. A suggestion was made that Marsha Harper apply for a grant to aid with the funding for the RSI project. Members were asked to submit possible ideas for grant funding to Marsha.

President Terrill reported that we have finally obtained our tax-exempt status. This status should be beneficial to us when applying for grants.

Craig Beard reported from the earlier meeting concerning the CCL web site. The site should contain a hot link to the RSI; an archives should be maintained, since we are tax exempt the URL could be a ccl.org; the RSI journals address list could be linked to the Union list of CCL members; addition of a duplicates list for sharing periodicals and resources would be beneficial; a membership list position order would be helpful to other colleagues, e.g. to locate catalogers in an efficient way. Concern was expressed about the location of the site on the UAB server instead of a CCL member institution. Members were encouraged to ask their respective campus computer departments if they could host the site.

Carisse Berryhill, reporting for the nominating committee, gave the following slate of officers: Brenda Turner was nominated for the position of President/VP Elect, Henry Terrill was nominated for the position of Secretary/Treasurer and two were nominated to fill positions on the RSI board, Don Meredith and Sherry Jennette. These nominations were accepted by acclamation.

The need for an increase in dues to cover additional RSI costs was discussed. Jim Womack motioned that the dues be increased to $10 beginning immediately. Motion passed. Brenda Turner motioned to institute an institutional membership fee to help offset the RSI costs. The membership would have non-voting status. Motion passed. Nancy Kitchen motioned to set the dues for institutions at $100 to be of support to CCL. Motion passed.

Carisse Berryhill motioned that the offer from ACU’s Computing Center to host the RSI on their UNIX computer be accepted until an investigation can be made about how to proceed. Motion passed.

Freed-Hardeman University was the site for the 2001 conference with President Carisse Berryhill presiding at the business meeting. In the treasurer’s report Henry Terrill reported that CCL has been recognized as a non-profit entity in Arkansas as well as the 501(c) (3) IRS statuses. Incorporation as a non-profit organization is pending with the Arkansas Department of Revenue and Finance. It is unclear if the IRS Form 990 will have to be filed each year since the CCL gross income (including RSI) is under $25,000. Terrill will prepare the form for the 1999- 2000 fiscal year and request an official ruling from the IRS.

30 Berryhill reported on the Restoration Archives Committee meeting. The archives finding aid prepared by Winnie Bell several years ago needs to be updated to include additional items of Restoration history and archives in the various institutions. The Association of Christian Librarians members that met with us jointly at Loma Linda were interested in the project as well. The committee asked Marsha Harper to investigate the use of an ACL software package that might be used to aid in inputting our data into the larger ACL database. Harper agreed to investigate the software.

Don Meredith brought a report from the Restoration Serials Index Board. He reported that the expense of production of the paper copies of the RSI is increasing and the software being used is no longer supported at ACU. A new software package and method of editing needs to be found. Contributors to the index are urged to use the online indexing tool as soon as it is completed. Discussion of indexing online journals was lengthy. Most online journals are unstable and do not have a publishing history as required by the guidelines for inclusion in the index. Publishers of online journals will be informed of the guidelines; and if appropriate, archives of issues (floppy, CD, or print) can be arranged, they may be considered in the future.

A revision of the Mission statement in the foreword of the RSI to reflect current practice was discussed. The statement will be revised to include wording that includes Churches of Christ and “historically related groups”.

The great value of the author authority list was mentioned. Melissa Johnson of ACU is now maintaining this list of authors and their biographical information and “connections.” It contains some 1810 listings and will not be available online. The RSI Thesaurus of Terms (subjects) will be online, but the author list will be provided in paper format. Information for the Author Authority list is to be sent to [email protected].

The Celebrating Christian Education in Dallas will be July 19-21, 2001 in conjunction with the Christian Scholars Conference. Several were unaware of the meeting as it has not been well publicized. RSI may have a panel presentation that will include: History of RSI (Loveland), and Trends in Article Content (McCallon). The RSI will be showcased for marketing to as many as possible in its new online format.

Mr. Cory Friend is writing the new software program and he is extracting the data from the old RSI software. It will be windows based and provide online addition to the indexing and instant updating after editorial verification of each entry. It will have searching enhancements that allow searching by date, journal title, and author and other features that are being worked out.

A Memorandum of Agreement between Mr. Friend and CCL/RSI is in preparation. It will provide for electronic index, support of the program, ownership by CCL, specific examples of functionality, and ongoing maintenance. The ACU Legal Department will review the agreement. The total price is $6,000 with a $900 per year maintenance agreement to begin one year after the program is completed. The first payment of $2,000 has been made already from CCL funds. A second payment is due in the summer, and a final $2,000 payment will be made when the software is delivered, documentation is completed and training of two (2) librarians in the use of the software is completed sometime in the fall, 2001.

31 After some discussion of possible ways to fund the software project and ongoing maintenance Berryhill volunteered to head an effort to seek grant funding. Since users of the index must bear a portion of the costs to access it and the current need for $6,000 is a problem, pledges of $500 each from Harding Graduate School, Lipscomb, Oklahoma, Freed-Hardeman, Faulkner, Abilene, Harding, and Christian Theological Seminary were made. Florida College pledged $250 and Pepperdine, Ohio Valley, Lubbock, and Cascade needed to check funding sources before committing a set amount.

Melissa Johnson of ACU conducted a demonstration of the RSI Online Database and the indexers form which was well received.

With the tax exempt status granted, and Arkansas non-profit status granted, it seems appropriate to have the Secretary/Treasurer remain as a member of the Harding University staff in Arkansas. This would require a Governance/Bylaws change. Brenda Turner and Henry Terrill were appointed to draft such a change and submit it to the membership before the next meeting.

Since it was decided that a CCL logo needs to be adopted, Berryhill entertained a motion by Marie Byers, and seconded by Craig Churchill that the logo used for the 20th conference be adopted as the official logo of the Christian College Librarians. The motion carried. Henry Terrill will make copyright and trademark applications as soon as Shull supplies the logo in digital form. Credit will be given the artist, Algene Steel of FHU.

After some discussion it was decided that the CCL web site would be hosted by Faulkner University. Craig Beard will continue to supervise the site, but Faulkner personnel would enter any changes or updating according to Faulkner campus guidelines.

Don Meredith suggested a permanent archive location for CCL. Erma Jean Loveland volunteered the Center for Restoration Studies to take the archive of CCL, but not to collect the materials. After discussion, it was decided that the host institution’s director would collect the materials for each conference and forward it to the CRS each year. A note of appreciation is being sent to Geneva Hoover for her many years of collecting the historical materials for the Christian College Librarians meetings.

Don Meredith is preparing a guide to the ATLA CD-ROM index and to the ATLA database as offered through OCLC’s FirstSearch service. These will be available on the HUGSR web site. Several annotated bibliographies (15+) on Restoration Studies are also available at the HUGSR web site.

Don Haymes announced the near completion of the filming of the Apostolic Times 1931-1954, and the pending filming of Old Paths, 1866-1913. He will announce when film is available from CTS.

David Howard announced that the Gospel Advocate Obituary Index is being converted to a windows format. It is to be available at some point through the Lipscomb web site. It may be accessed now at: http://L106Qw/Gaobit/index.htm.

32 In the Lipscomb University meeting of CCL in 2002 Terrill circulated the official document of incorporation of CCL as an Arkansas non-profit organization as of March 6, 2002.

In a report of the Restoration Archives Committee, the Association of Christian Librarians and the American Theological Library Association have been in discussions with the Restoration Archives Committee to consider a proposal that the committee begin to compile a finding tool for archives materials in our various libraries. ATLA and ACL support such projects and ATLA would provide technical support for the project and mount it on their web page for general access. It was decided that the committee pursue the project to develop an archives finding aid for our materials with the help of ACL and ATLA.

In a report by Craig Churchill on RSI activities, it was reported that the new RSI online is available now. The author file, subject file, and other ‘authority files’ will be added soon. These can be downloaded and printed as needed by the indexers. There will be a need for additional funds for equipment or database maintenance in the future and a contingency fund needs to be established to build those funds before they are needed. The software development is completed and awaiting acceptance by the committee before the final payment is authorized. The address for the New RSI is: www.acu.edu/rsi and is available now for searching.

Indexers may enter their data online by using the: log on button and the administrative buttons. Your username will be Last name and first initial (one word) and it is not case sensitive. The password is “changeme” and should be changed to the individual’s own password for use in the account and entering indexing data.

Including indexing of electronic journals in the RSI will follow the general guidelines for selection and inclusion of print journals in the index. They will be considered on a title-by-title basis.

After some discussion of institutional dues structure, it was decided that institutional dues be set at $25 and that each institution instruct the treasurer of an amount above $25 to be placed in the contingency fund for new RSI software. The individual institutions will be invoiced for the combined amount by the treasurer.

The nominating committee, with Tamie Willis reporting, has chosen the following nominees: vice-president/president elect (2 year term) Carolyn Wilson and Craig Churchill. Nominees for two places (4 year terms) on the RSI Board were: Rebecca Vickers, Wade Osburn, and Lindsey Hoffman. Tellers Willis and Leah Hamrick reported election results: vice-president/president elect is Craig Churchill, and RSI Board members are Wade Osburn and Lindsey Hoffman.

In 2003 Oklahoma Christian University was host to the CCL meeting. Brenda Turner, president, was presiding. After it was certified that a quorum was present and Craig Churchill opened the meeting with prayer, the president introduced all of the first time attendees at the CCL conference. The treasurer’s report was presented and approved.

Barbara Kelley reported for the Scholarship Committee the applicants for the scholarship. It was recommended by the committee that Steven Kellat from Rochester College receive the scholarship of $350, and the motion was made and carried. 33

Marsha Harper reported for the Restoration Archives Committee. Chairman Carisse Berryhill has made several contacts to ATLA and ACL that have been productive towards the idea of creating a web site and web compatible database/archive and holdings list of all of our CCL and ACL groups. They are very interested in helping develop the format and in acquiring the funding for the project. Some issues to be addressed and resolved are:

1. The tool to be developed - web compatible site. 2. To be run on ATLA server with Technical support and software loaded there. 3. The record format and fields to be used. EAD format, MARC format or a combination (a bi-functional record) 4. A lead agency to handle the funding, a non-profit agency, joint sponsorship, and the lines of authority. 5. Formal guidelines of the organization for those who participate (add data) 6. A Task team made up of Sara Harwell (DCHS), Carisse Berryhill (HUGSR), Nancy Olson (ACL), and an ACU representative (Harper or designee). 7. Establishment of Training for those who input records at CCL, ATLA, ACL or at other times.

Motion and second to accept the report as presented. Motion carried.

Wade Osburn reported for the RSI Board. A “help” button within the Indexer’s portion of the RSI site would help with format questions from indexers. A help button for searching in the database is coming later. Some indexers have suggested a separate indexers listserv. The board approved Erma Jean Loveland and Marsha Harper remaining on the RSI Board after their retirements.

Turner announced that the executive committee recommended that individual dues remain at $10 for 2003-2004 and that institutional dues be $25, with any additional amount for the contingency fund at the discretion of the individual institution. The recommendation was accepted.

After discussion on the possibility of a joint conference with ACL in 2005 the motion was made and amended that we survey members of ACL about this possibility, conditional on finding a willing host site in the area of the ACL conference in Philadelphia. Marsha Harper volunteered to report back to the Executive Committee on findings after the ACL meeting in June.

An update, September 13, 2003, on the possibility of a joint conference with ACL in 2005 revealed that the ACL planning process would have to be between an ACL member willing to host both conferences (in 2006 or later). Further discussions will follow as the 2006 ACL conference site planning takes place in their organization.

In the 2004 CCL conference at York College members made the decision to change the fiscal year from July-June to the calendar year with dues structure of $10 for individuals and $25 for institutions with an additional contribution to the contingency fund as specified by the individual institution to be continued.

34 Mark McCallon reporting for the scholarship committee, recommended that the scholarship be increased to $700 per year for 2004 and motion carried. The recipient of the scholarship is to be Ruth Carlock of York College. Barbara Kelly from Faulkner will be chair for the 2005 selection committee.

Carisse Berryhill reporting for the Restoration Archives Committee, indicated that it seemed that the project of producing a web accessible finding tool for archives collections is not underway because of lack of staffing and budgeting or other issues at ATLA. Berryhill will revisit the ACL group and inquire about other groups or institutions that may want to contribute to the initial start up project. The proposal that the CCL Restoration Archives Committee is authorized to enter into negotiation process with ATLA on the archives project from CCL and offer up to $2000 towards project costs. Motion carried unanimously.

Wade Osburn, reporting for the RSI Board, reported on titles needing indexers and a call for volunteers. A new enhancement being implemented is a new “preview” selection to the citation before it is sent to the database. There was a discussion of the role of the managing editor and the possible expansion of that role in order to “share the responsibility” for that monumental editing job. A possible editorial group appointed through the RSI Board for 1 year terms was a possibility.

The Nominating Committee, after calling for nominations from the floor (none offered) submitted the following candidates:

VP/PE: Stephen Bowers (Rochester College) Hope Shull (Freed-Hardeman University) RSI Board: J. J. Compton (Oklahoma Christian University) Ken Gunselman (York College) Barbara Kelly (Faulkner University) Mark Tucker (Abilene Christian University)

After tellers collected the paper ballots and assembled results it was announced: Hope Shull will be Vice president/President Elect J. J. Compton and Mark Tucker will serve on the RSI Board.

Discussion of the possibility of a joint ACL and CCL meeting for 2007 was extensive and detailed. However, in a session on new business, it was revealed through a survey on issues and involvement of CCL membership, made by Brenda Turner, that there was a lack of interest among the general membership. It was suggested that continuation and depth of cooperation with ACL should be expressed honestly to President Churchill for recommendation and action before the annual meeting in Rochester. Comments and names will be held anonymous.

Governance/Bylaws amendment was distributed by Terrill as proposed. The change would require current membership in CCL for officers and for all standing committee members. Motion carried.

A special treat for all participants was to travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, lunch at the Governor’s Mansion, and have a tour of the mansion and the State Capitol Building. 35

The 2005 CCL conference was called to order by President Craig Churchill, who called for a treasurer’s report. Henry Terrill distributed copies of this report which was reviewed and accepted. Then he asked Lindsey Hoffman as chair of the scholarship committee to give her report. There was one applicant for the scholarship and the committee recommended that it be granted to Brooke Ward of Florida College. The motion was made and carried.

Carisse Berryhill gave the report on the Restoration Archives Committee by reviewing activities to work with ATLA to produce a web accessible tool for searching member archive collections. The committee proposes to try again for ATLA support and action on the proposal and to continue to offer up to $2000 for project startup costs. Motion was made and carried.

Wade Osburn gave the Restoration Serials Index Board report. Several items were discussed and recommended:

1. Current indexer information will be updated by e-mail soon. 2. Guidelines will be issued on standardization of capitalization of index entries. 3. Plans will be put in place to have some indexer training at the next meeting. 4. Additional functionality is planned for searching the database and on the indexer side for selecting subjects and authors. 5. Additional search fields for Book Reviews and Scripture verse references are being planned. 6. Standardization on how to handle e-journal entries is under discussion. 7. No additional annual volumes will be printed. Only the three year cumulation volumes will be printed in the future. 2005 is a cumulation year. 8. Six new titles are recommended to be added and indexers are needed for them.

In order to expand editorial opportunities for the RSI responsibilities will be divided into three editorial positions: Technical Editor: the one who approves entry submissions (should be an experienced indexer), which includes deleting duplicates, approving new subjects and authors, making sure entries are filled in correctly, etc. This position needs to have at hand a large number of the titles indexed in order to verify entries. Managing Editor: responsible for recruiting indexers, keeping up with submissions, sending reminders, and correspondence regarding problems in indexing, etc. Editor: responsible for the print version, editing final copy for printing which includes, introductory pages, receiving orders and mailing copies of print volumes. Churchill reported on a discussion between the Scholarship Committee and the Executive Committee regarding qualifications for scholarship recipients. Although action from the general membership is not required, it was felt that the guidelines should be publicized and made public at this meeting. The proposal adopted by the Scholarship Committee and approved by the Executive Board includes three criteria for applicants for the CCL scholarship: 1. A Christian College Librarians, Inc. member in good standing (dues paid for fiscal year of scholarship application) 36 2. An employee of an institutional member of the Christian College Librarians, Inc. (Dues paid for fiscal year of scholarship application) 3. Member in good standing of a congregation of the churches of Christ (documentation required from elder or minister of the congregation)

After discussion a motion was made to accept the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee and Executive Committee regarding scholarship applicants’ qualifications, and motion carried. The scholarship application and criteria are posted on the CCL web site. Marsha Harper offered a motion, seconded by Ken Gunselman that the Scholarship Committee and the Executive Committee consider increasing the scholarship to $1000 for 2006. Motion carried.

Craig Churchill appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to develop guidelines and discussions with Christian Chronicle staff regarding a Webliography of Churches of Christ resources posted through the Christian Chronicle web site, and recommend action via e-mail to the Executive Committee or membership during the coming year, or at the next meeting. Chair of the committee is Tami Willis, and members are Carisse Berryhill, James Wiser, Stephen Kellat, and Sheila Owen.

2006 will be the 25th meeting of the CCL and it was felt that a history of the association would be in order. It was noted that CCL is older than 25 years, but only met biennially for a few years. Churchill asked Winnie Bell, Librarian Emeritus from Harding University to consult with Erma Jean Loveland, ACU Emeritus, Griffin Copeland, Florida College Emeritus, Charles Baucom, York College Emeritus, Don Meredith, HUGSR, or others that were present at the organizational meeting and prepare a history of the association. Winnie accepted the appointment.

Participants at the 2005 Conference heard special presentations from members of the Rochester College faculty, among them being President Michael Westerfield, Dr. Vernon Boyd, and Dr. Gregory Stevenson. We also made a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Public Library for very interesting tours. The last night we were treated to a special dinner at the Rochester Church of Christ where we heard Robert Lytle, author of “Mackinac Passage” series of children’s books.

We have a dream has been realized in many areas. The dream has expanded with each technological advancement far beyond the beginning dream and we look forward to a continuation of this dream as future generations of librarians keep up the struggle to make use of advancing technology and improved librarianship.

History of Restoration Serials Index By Erma Jean Loveland, ACU Special Services Librarian Emeritus, RSI Secretary Emeritus

Until 32 years ago, information about the Restoration Movement, as seen through the eyes of its periodical editors and lectureship directors, has been mostly hidden in tons of paper and reels of tape. Researchers needing information about persons and issues among Churches of Christ had to spend hours, days, and weeks turning pages of periodicals such as Gospel Advocate or Christian Chronicle in their search for this data. A few of the journals had yearly indexes published within the last issue of the volume, such as Alexander Campbell’s Millennial Harbinger. These are not exhaustive in providing finding tools to the subject matter contained within the pages of the journals. Jack L. Ray and his students worked for four years on an index to Gospel Advocate, 1855 thru 1982 which can be useful. Individuals have their own personal vertical file systems or finding tools. R. L. Roberts, the first archivist for the Center for Restoration Studies (CRS), used 3 x 5 slips of paper filed into card catalog drawers for his finding aids. But these were selective sources because of the originator’s personal interest, and access to these private files was limited. CRS provides more accessible opportunities; for instance, the Center now has R. L. Robert’s personal files in-house. There was no comprehensive Reader’s Guide to the Religious Literature of the Churches of Christ at this time. Thirty-five years ago, Paul Dennis, Director of the fledging ACU Computer Center, and Callie Faye Milliken, the ACU Library Director, were having coffee in the ACU Student Center. He mentioned to her how computers could be used successfully in the indexing of brotherhood papers. Dr. Milliken agreed to give some thought to the idea. There were many aspects to be considered including who would have the skills and the interests to index this massive amount of material. About the same time in 1974, Oklahoma Christian University called a meeting of sister Christian College Librarians and other interested people to their campus. Dr. Milliken decided to approach this group of library professionals to see if they would be interested in a pilot project of computing indexing. Her major point was that a cooperative index would provide a needed reference tool to help researchers of the 20th Century Stone/Campbell Restoration Movement. Several librarians were interested and the ACU Computer Center agreed to help. By 1975 Christian College Librarians meeting at Harding University, the first printed index, January- March, 1974, was distributed. It was a carbon copy, printed on green and white lined computer paper, created by volunteer indexers who were widely spread geographically. The CCLI was now a reality. The first editors were Callie Faye Milliken, Editorial Director: R. L. Roberts and Marsha Harper.

38 The 1975-1977 three-year accumulations of the Christian College Librarians Index (CCLI) contained 18 periodical titles, including Gospel Advocate, Christian Bible Teacher, Christian Woman, Gospel Guardian, Restoration Quarterly and Spiritual Sword. Restoration Serials Index 2002 includes the indexing of 37 periodicals and 11 lectureship proceedings. In comparing the figures, 18 titles in 1975-1977 and 37 titles in 2002, RSI contains more than twice as many journal titles now as in the beginning. All of the 12 lectureships have been added as well. RSI 2002-2005 three-year cumulation is now being prepared for printing. The purpose of the Restoration Serials Index is four-fold: 1. To facilitate access to periodical literature produced by members of the Churches of Christ and historically related groups. 2. To encourage and facilitate scholarly research about biblical teachings and restoration of New Testament Christianity. 3. To document the broad spectrum of thought among Churches of Christ and historically related groups stemming from the nineteenth-century movement to restore and unify the church of the New Testament. 4. To serve the needs of those who have an interest in what adherents of these groups are thinking and saying. Now when a researcher wants brotherhood thinking on “church growth,” “women’s role,” or “music” in the church, he/she could have those subject materials in hand within a matter of minutes. When the scholars need more information on an individual working during the last quarter of the 20th century and the first part of the 21st century, a few minutes with RSI will help to focus their research needs. Information about any numbers of individuals can be found that way. Type in Douglas Allen Foster, Richard T. Hughes, or Thomas H. Olbricht, for a bibliography of their writings and speaking in journals and lectureships within the Church of Christ fellowship and you have the information. Using the name, “Christian College Librarians Index to Selected Religious Periodicals” (CCLI) the first three-year cumulative volume 1975-1977 was printed in 1979. Since then, eleven three- year cumulative indexes have been issued. 59 periodical titles and 16 lectureships are included, during that 28-year span. Five publications have changed names and ten have ceased publication. Of the original 13 periodicals covered, 9 are still being published: Christian Bible Teacher, Christian Woman, Christian Worker, Firm Foundation, Gospel Advocate, Gospel Light, Restoration Quarterly, Spiritual Sword, and 20th Century Christian. Currently, RSI is edited by Dr. Marsha Harper, a founding editor. The RSI Editorial Board helps to make decisions for RSI management. The editor and Erma Jean Loveland, ACU emeritus, are members of this board, along with four who are elected by Christian College Librarians at our biennial meetings, and a consultant, Don Haymes, formerly with “American Theological Librarians Index.” A total of 83 indexers have contributed indexing during the 28 year period; seven of the original indexers contributed indexing for the 2002 RSI: JoAnne Barclay, Alabama; Winnie Bell, Harding; Paula Ganaway and Rebecca Vickers, Lubbock; Herbert Gore, Pepperdine; Don Meredith, Harding Graduate School of Religion; and Dr. Marsha Harper, ACU. Indexers have come from 30 academic institutions plus 10 other locations. Once librarians start to index, they tend to take their indexing with them as they change jobs and addresses. The geographic spread of indexers goes from Pepperdine on the West Coast to Florida College in the 39 eastern U.S., from Great Lakes Christian College in the north to Abilene Christian University in the south. New titles are chosen for RSI every three years. The guidelines for this process include: long, scholarly articles; large circulation and a solid printing history as basic indicators for stability and longevity of the titles; and a balanced range of geographical regions as well as a wide range of viewpoints. The following periodical titles were in Toto in the 2002 online version of the database: Christian Scholars Conference Papers, Christian Studies (Faculty Bulletin), Christian Woman, Church Growth, Discipliana, Exegete, Fort Worth Lectures, Guardian of Truth, Harding University Lectures, Image, Reason and Revelations, Restoration Quarterly, and UpReach. New titles added in 1999 included: Leaven, Ensign, Christian Journal, Christian Expositor, and Faith and Facts. Currently, there is a waiting list of titles to be considered for additions. The name, CCLI, was changed in 1986 to the current one –– Restoration Serials Index (RSI). In 1991, users at ACU with certain accounts were given online access to the RSI database for the first time. Three years later in 1994, the database was downloaded into the Bible computing system, making it available to many more users online. Access points were provided from other sites such as Dr. Hans Rollmann’s at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Jim McMillan’s in Illinois. Currently, the RSI database may be accessed via a terminal in the ACU Library or by a modem from the user’s chosen location by using this address: http://www3.acu.edu/RSI/index.php Charles Stelding operates the Bible system. In recent years, a computer program written by Cory Friend has provided new enhancement features for the indexers as well as the users.
