Russell Department of Botany, The University/Liverpool L69 3BX, England ABSTRACT: The salinity tolerances of Baltic and Atlantic populations of Fucus vesiculosus and Chorda filum have been measured using net photosynthesis as an index of tissue damage. Atlantic Fucus proved to have a broader salinity tolerance than Atlantic Chorda, a result which is consistent with others published on the tolerances of intertidal and sublittoral marine species. The optimum salinity for all Atlantic plants was 11 or 34%0, but that of all Baltic plants was 6%o. Baltic Fucus and Chorda were different in breadth of tolerance, in spite of the fact that they inhabit the same sublittoral habitat. This difference is interpreted in relation to their respective life-forms, Fucus being perennial and Chorda annual. Fucus is therefore present as a macrothallus at all times of year, including the critical low-salinity period of the spring ice-melt. Chorda evades damage by existing as a resistent microthallus at this time. It is concluded that the distinctive character of Baltic marine algae deserves nomenclatural recognition at some level below that of the species. The rank of subspecies would appear the most appropriate of those hsted in the Code, but none of those available is able adequately to express the patterns of variation now being reported. INTRODUCTION The Baltic Sea, like the Mediterranean, has a very narrow exit to the Atlantic Ocean, and the fact that the flow of its seawater is almost always in an outward direction, serves only to increase its isolation. -

Hoffmann, Bernabe Santelices Departamento de Ecologia, Facultad de Ciencias Biologicas, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Casilla 114-D, Santiago, Chile ABSTRACT: It has been proposed that a 'bank of microscopic forms' functions as a survival mechanism for benthc macroalgae, m some ways analogous to the 'seed bank' of terrestrial plants. Four aspects related to this hypothesis are examined here, namely (1) origin and morphology of the structures forming banks, (2) their specific compositions, (3) environmental conditions that allow their survival in a state of suspended growth, and conditions that trigger reinitiation of growth; and (4) losses from the banks by diverse causes Although the structures at which growth suspension occurs are of very different morphologies, and probably are also different in their capacities of temporal displacement, both types of banks are regulated by similar environmental factors and subjected to similar types of constraints. Some important differences between the 2 banks are likely to stem from the lesser longe- vity of the algal microscopic stages, which would limit the duration of banks of microscopic forms INTRODUCTION 1979, Fenner 1985, Leck et al. 1989). CROTHERS Egypt Cottage, Fair Cross, Washford, Watchet, Somerset TA23 0LY ABSTRACT Rocky sea shores are amongst the best habitats in which to carry out biological field projects. In that habitat, marine snails (prosobranchs) offer the most opportunities for individual investigations, being easy to find, to identify, to count and to measure and beng sufficiently robust to survive the experience. A key is provided for the identification of the larger species and suggestions are made for investigations to exploit selected features of individual species. INTRODUCTION Rocky sea shores offer one of the best habitats for individual or group investigations. Not only is there de facto public access (once you have got there) but also the physical factors that dominate the environment - tides (inundation versus desiccation), waves, heat, cold, light, dark, salinity etc. - change significantly over a few metres in distance. As a bonus, most of the fauna and flora lives out on the open rock surface and patterns of distribution may be clearly visible to the naked eye. Finally, they are amongst the most ‘natural’ of habitats in the British Isles; unless there has been an oil spill, rocky sea shores are unlikely to have been greatly affected by covert human activity. Some 270 species of marine snail (Phylum Mollusca, Class Gastropoda; Sub-Class Prosobranchia) live in the seas around the British Isles (Graham, 1988) and their empty shells may be found on many beaches. Most of these species are small (less than 3 mm long) or live beneath the tidemarks. -

Received: 26 June 2020; Accepted: 17 August 2020; Published: 8 October 2020 Abstract: Diatom community composition and abundances on different thallus parts of adult and juvenile specimens of Ecklonia maxima and Laminaria pallida were examined in False Bay, South Africa, using light and scanning electron microscopy. Altogether, 288 thallus portions were analysed. 2 Diatom abundances ranged from 0 to 404 cells mm− and were generally higher on E. maxima and juvenile thalli than L. pallida and adult specimens. Moreover, diatom abundances differed between the various thallus parts, being highest on the upper blade and lowest on the primary blade. A total of 48 diatom taxa belonging to 28 genera were found. Gomphoseptatum Medlin, Nagumoea Witkowski and Kociolek, Cocconeis Ehrenberg, and Navicula Bory were the most frequently occurring genera, being present in 84%, 65%, 62.5%, and 45% of the analysed samples, respectively. Among these, Cocconeis and Gomphoseptatum were the most abundant, contributing 50% and 27% of total diatom cells counted collectively across all samples. -

No general list of Maine shells—including land, fresh-water and marine species—-has been published since 1843, when Dr. J. W. Mighels’ list was printed in the Boston Journal of Natural History. Dr. Mighels may be called the “Pioneer” conchologist of Maine. By profession a physician, in his leisure hours he was a most enthusiastic collector and student of all forms of molluscan life.
