Wirkner1, Verena Stagl2, Nadia Turk 3 Abstract The present type catalogue lists the presumed type series of Chordeumatida (Diplopoda) housed in the Natural History Museum in Vienna (NHMW). The species list in alphabetical order gives information on the recent nomenclatorical status, the category of the types, the condition, the sex and the number of spec imens as well as the type locality of the respective series. This type catalogue aims to document the valu able collection of Chordeumatida and to make accessible important information for future taxonomic and systematic studies on Diplopoda. Key words: Chordeumatida, type list, Natural History Museum Vienna. Introduction The myriapod collection of the Natural History Museum in Vienna (NHMW) is one of the largest and most important in the world. Carl Graf Attems - one of the leading myria pod specialists - was active there from 1894 until his death in 1952 ( S t a g l 2001). The Chordeumatida collection is relatively small, but rich in type series. Among about 200 different species, we can identify approximately 100 series as type materi al. Originally the collection was composed of two parts, the Museum's collection and Attems' private one, with two different catalogues. Nowadays both collections were merged. The majority of specimens in the Attems collection was collected by himself, others he obtained from fellow collectors. Within the Museum's collection the so called "acquisition date" is often quoted and includes information about the collector and the donator. In the books of acquisition the stocks are listed in chronological order indicated by Roman numerals and single series in Arabic numerals. Listed are all series that were included in the collection by donation, purchase or by exchange. 1 Christian S. Zoologische Abteilung, Burgring 7, A-1010 Wien, Österreich. 4 The NHMW acquired ©Naturhistorischesa large collection Museum Wien, of download Robert unter www.biologiezentrum.atLatzel (1845-1919). In 1884, he sold 108 series, with 277 specimens. In 1919, the main part (420 series and 7000 specimens) - his legacy - was donated to the Museum. Generally, Latzel did not designate type series, nor did he specify the type localities. Furthermore, in many cases he merely summarized the localities, such as "Österreichische Küstenlande, Kärnten, Niederösterreich". Detailed information on the localities, however, can be found only in the book of acquisition of 1884, written with red ink by Latzel himself (S tagl 2001, Stagl & M ildner 2001). Karl Wilhelm Verhoeff (1867-1945) sold parts of his collection to the NHMW as well as to various other museums. Acquisitions of type material from him took place in 1896, 1897 (mediated by Theodor Adensamer, curator of the Crustacea-, Arachnoidea- and Myriapoda-collection), 1899, 1908, 1909, and 1940. Furthermore, in 1935 the Museum obtained numerous myriapods from him by exchange. Attems had contact with other myriapod specialists in Europe, and they exchanged material, mainly type-specimens. Concerning the Chordeumatida we have syntypes from Henry W. Brolemann and Karl Strasser. In the last years we have obtained type specimens from Jean-Paul Mauries and Sergey Golovatch. Various specialists have worked with the Chordeumatida collection, e.g. K. Strasser, I. Kurnik, K. Thaler, A. Tadler, J.-P. Mauries, and J. Spelda. Their published results are mentioned in the text at the relevant type series. Methods Some of the earlier specialists were not used to designate types of species, such as Attems and Verhoeff. Only in rare cases we could find such specifications on the labels or in the catalogue. Very often no indication can be found in the original description about the number of specimens which were at the authors' disposal. Occasionally Attems wrote the mark "Type" on labels, apparently believing it to be a new species and assigning it a new name. However, he subsequently never described these specimens, and these names are "manuscript names" Difficulties were often encountered in identifying locality specifications. Data are often obscure, sometimes only the local name is known or - especially in the old collection - names are no longer used today and several localities previously belonged to other countries. The type status of the Museum series had to be carefully verified. Therefore, data were obtained from the books of acquisition, Museum and Attems' catalogues, labels, and the original descriptions. Attems' handwriting on the labels in the single lots and especially in his catalogues is difficult to decipher; see Strouhal (1961). Concerning the Latzel col lection we considered specimens lacking locality specifications (see above) as syntypes. Since the past few years an inventory of the collection has been kept, all type series have received an inventory number and have been entered into a computer database. Notes The species list is arranged alphabetically, subspecies and variations are listed under the species name. The following information is given: - The original reference of the description. 5 - The current systematic©Naturhistorisches status with Museum additional Wien, download references unter www.biologiezentrum.at when it has changed recently. - The family to which the species belongs [according to H offman (1980)]. - The category of the type, and if uncertain then marked with a the number and sex of the single specimens and the mode of their preparation. All specimens are preser ved in 75% ethanol, parts of them are kept on microslides. Different series are sep arated by a hyphen (-). Abbreviations: GP = gonopods, Ind. = Individual, indet. = not determined individual, juv = juvenile. - The type locality. Locality name in English, the original local specification in quotation marks. In brackets the name who collected (coll.) and donated (don.) the specimens, if known. - The inventory number, and the number of the acquisition in parenthesis. - Notes if necessary. References to authors who reviewed the type material (rev.). - References: Attems' references are listed according to numbers assigned in Strouhal (1961). The original description of species is indicated first with the reference number and second with the page number, separated by a slash (.../...). Verhoeff s references are treated in the same way and were recorded in the list of M auerm ayer (1962). The taxonomic position of many species of the Chordeumatida is still doubtful and this fact has led to many discussions. It is hoped that the compilation of this catalogue helps specialists for further studies and supports them clarifying outstanding questions.

A new genus of the julid tribe Brachyiulini, Enghophyllum gen. nov., is described, comprising two species from Greece. The type-species, E. naxium (Verhoeff, 1901) comb. nov. (ex Megaphyllum Verhoeff, 1894), appears to be rather widespread in the Aegean: it is known from Antiparos Island and Naxos Island (the type locality), both in the Cyclades, as well as East Mavri Islet, Dodecanese Archipelago (new record). The vulva of E. naxium is described for the first time. In addition,E. sifnium gen. et sp. nov. is described based on a single adult male from Sifnos Island, Cyclades. The new genus is distinct from other genera of the Brachyiulini mainly by its peculiar gonopod structure, apparently disjunct and at least mostly apomorphous: (1) promeres broad, shield-like, in situ protruding mostly posteriad, completely covering the opisthomeres and gonopodal sinus; (2) transverse muscles and coxal apodemes of promere fully reduced; (3) opisthomere with three differentiated processes, i.e., lateral, basal posterior and apical posterior; (4) solenomere rather simple, tubular.

ZooKeys 626: 1–43. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.626.9681 Abstract Members of the family Siphonorhinidae Cook, 1895 are thread-like eyeless millipedes that possess an astounding number of legs, including one individual with 750. Due to their cryptic lifestyle, rarity in natural history collections, and sporadic study over the last century, the family has an unclear phylogenetic placement, and intrafamilial relationships remain unknown. Here we report the discovery of a second spe- cies of Illacme, a millipede genus notable for possessing the greatest number of legs of any known animal on the planet.

  • Ordinal-Level Phylogenomics of the Arthropod Class
Ordinal-Level Phylogenomics of the Arthropod Class Diplopoda (Millipedes) Based on an Analysis of 221 Nuclear Protein-Coding Loci Generated Using Next- Generation Sequence Analyses Michael S. Brewer1,2*, Jason E. Bond3 1 Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, University of California Berkeley, Berkeley, California, United States of America, 2 Department of Biology, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, United States of America, 3 Department of Biological Sciences and Auburn University Museum of Natural History, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, United States of America Abstract Background: The ancient and diverse, yet understudied arthropod class Diplopoda, the millipedes, has a muddled taxonomic history. Despite having a cosmopolitan distribution and a number of unique and interesting characteristics, the group has received relatively little attention; interest in millipede systematics is low compared to taxa of comparable diversity. The existing classification of the group comprises 16 orders. Past attempts to reconstruct millipede phylogenies have suffered from a paucity of characters and included too few taxa to confidently resolve relationships and make formal nomenclatural changes. Herein, we reconstruct an ordinal-level phylogeny for the class Diplopoda using the largest character set ever assembled for the group. Methods: Transcriptomic sequences were obtained from exemplar taxa representing much of the diversity of millipede orders using second-generation (i.e., next-generation or high-throughput) sequencing. These data were subject to rigorous orthology selection and phylogenetic dataset optimization and then used to reconstruct phylogenies employing Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood optimality criteria. Ancestral reconstructions of sperm transfer appendage development (gonopods), presence of lateral defense secretion pores (ozopores), and presence of spinnerets were considered.

United States National Museum ^^*fr?*5j Bulletin 212 CHECKLIST OF THE MILLIPEDS OF NORTH AMERICA By RALPH V. CHAMBERLIN Department of Zoology University of Utah RICHARD L. HOFFMAN Department of Biology Virginia Polytechnic Institute SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION • WASHINGTON, D. C. • 1958 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the National Museum include two series known, respectively, as Proceedings and Bulletin. The Proceedings series, begun in 1878, is intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original papers based on the collections of the National Museum, that set forth newly acquired facts in biology, anthropology, and geology, with descriptions of new forms and revisions of limited groups. Copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, are distributed as published to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the different subjects. The dates at which these separate papers are published are recorded in the table of contents of each of the volumes. The series of Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, contains separate publications comprising monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, catalogs of type specimens, special collections, and other material of similar nature. The majority of the volumes are octavo in size, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few in- stances. In the Bulletin series appear volumes under the heading Contribu- tions from the United States National Herbarium, in octavo form, published by the National Museum since 1902, which contain papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum.

Weichselbau- mer) and 1984 (leg. Pfister), 59 spider species have been taken by hand and from emergence traps for aquatic insects at Piburger Bach, ca. 950 m SL, the list showing a rather accidental combination from the terrestrial environment. One species only, Pardosa amentata (Lycosidae), hasbeen trappedinlargenumbers, possibly reflecting its ability to move with the water. Furthermore, there are 2 rare species: Troxochrus nctsutus (Lin. Erigoninae), Tegenaria sp. (Agelenidae). — A critical species list is given for the millipede Orders Polydesmi- da (3) and Chordeumatida (4) in North Tyrol together with references to the literature(1884—1985). There are6Po/ydes»msand 14Chordeumatida,allofthemrecollectedinrecent years. For 3 species the localoccur- rences are questioned for lack of substantial evidence. Field work on millipedes in North Tyrol is surveyed briefly together with comments on habitat distribution and zoogeography.

  • Complementary Distribution Patterns of Arthropod Detritivores (Woodlice and Millipedes) Along Forest Edge‐To
Insect Conservation and Diversity (2016) 9, 456–469 doi: 10.1111/icad.12183 Complementary distribution patterns of arthropod detritivores (woodlice and millipedes) along forest edge-to-interior gradients PALLIETER DE SMEDT,1 KAREN WUYTS,2 LANDER BAETEN,1 AN DE SCHRIJVER,1 WILLEM PROESMANS,1 PIETER DE FRENNE,1 EVY AMPOORTER,1 ELYN REMY,1 MERLIJN GIJBELS,1 MARTIN HERMY,3 4 1 DRIES BONTE andKRISVERHEYEN 1Forest & Nature Lab, Department of Forest and Water management, Ghent University, Melle (Gontrode), Belgium, 2ENdEMIC Research Group, Department of Bioscience Engineering, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium, 3Division Forest, Nature and Landscape, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium and 4Terrestrial Ecology Unit (TEREC), Department of Biology, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium Abstract. 1. Worldwide, forest fragmentation induces edge effects, thereby strongly altering the forest microclimate and abiotic characteristics in the forest edge compared to the forest interior. The impact of edge-to-interior gradients on abiotic parameters has been extensively studied, but we lack insights on how biodiversity, and soil communities in particular, are structured along these gra- dients. 2. Woodlice (Isopoda) and millipedes (Diplopoda) are dominant macro-detriti- vores in temperate forests with acidic sandy soils. 3. We investigated the distribution of these macro-detritivores along forest edge-to-interior gradients in six different forest stands with sandy soils in north- ern Belgium. 4. Woodlouse abundance decreased exponentially with distance from the for- est edge, whereas millipede abundance did not begin to decrease until 7 m inside the forest stands. Overall, these patterns were highly species specific and could be linked to the species’ desiccation tolerance.
