Edgewood View Edgewood Country Club April 2021 Edgewood View Edgewood Country Club WHERE HERITAGE & EXCELLENCE COME TOGETHE R Fellow Edgewood Country Club Members, As we all are aware, the past 12 months dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic has been a challenge. Last spring our club took several extraordinary steps to ensure that ECC members were afforded reductions in charges to reflect the restrictions and loss of the normal services offered. Additionally, the Board elected to not ask the membership to increase dues for the upcoming year as we are still dealing with COVID-19. The club has been adding back services as the State of West Virginia restrictions are eased. In fact, outside of limited access to the fitness center, we are approaching full services with social distancing spacing restrictions being the largest factor hindering fully reopening the club. The Board also voted to temporarily remove the twenty percent service fee charge that was applied to club food and beverage purchases. In the past, some confusion has existed with this fee as some members thought it was a gratuity paid to their server. That has never been the case, funds generated from this fee have been and will be used to pay for our employee’s benefits and health insurance. It should be noted that any member may, if they feel inclined, add a gratuity to their bill solely at their discretion. As ECC has been increasing our staffing to accommodate the return to pre COVID service levels the club will be reestablishing the “service fee” beginning with April’s food and beverage expenditures. The fee will show up on all food and beverage tickets as “House Fund” to avoid any future confusion and will appear on your May statement. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out as needed. Doug Hartley D. HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.

  • West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker
West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker 1933: Johnny Javins, the pro at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, defeated pro I. C. ""Rocky''' Schorr of Bluefield Country Club in an 18-hole playoff at Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston to win the first West Virginia Open. Javins shot a 76 in the playoff while Schorr had an 82. They agreed to split first and second place money but Javins got the trophy donated by George C. Weimer of St. Albans. Javins and Schorr had tied after 72 holes of medal play with 302 scores. Schorr held a five-stroke lead over the field and an 11-stroke edge over Javins after two rounds but faltered on the second 36-hole day. Schorr's troubles started when he took a nine on the par-four third hole, needing five strokes to get out of a trap. Javins began his comeback with a 69 in the third round to pick up all 11 strokes on Schorr. The West Virginia Professional Golfers Association was formed in a meeting a month before the tournament, with Schorr the first president. Leaders by rounds: first, Schorr 72, by one; second, Schorr 147, by five; third, Javins and Schorr, 227s. Johnny Javins, Charleston 80-78-69-75--302 I. C.
