Directory of Golf Courses Designed by Donald J. Ross - Golf Course Architect Directory of Golf Courses Designed by Donald J. Ross - Golf Course Architect - Compiled by Donald Ross Society And THE TUFTS ARCHIVES Pinehurst, North Carolina Donald Ross Society List of Golf Courses Designed by Donald J. Ross The following list of the golf courses designed by Donald J. Ross originally was started in 1986 by the late W. Pete Jones, a fan of Donald Ross and a historian at heart. The original list was taken from the pages of The Golf Course by Geoffrey Cornish and Ron Whitten. The Ross courses on that list were contacted by Pete and surveyed as to their Ross heritage and supporting documents. The Donald Ross Society was created in 1989 and Pete became the Historian of the Society. He was joined by one of the Founders of the Society, Mike Fay, in further clarifying the list. Over the next ten years many additions and deletions were made. All of the materials that were used in determining the provenance of these courses are kept at The Tufts Archives in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where the papers of Donald Ross reside. Pete Jones died in 1998, and the work on the list continued with the assistance of Archivist Khristine Janizuk and Mike Fay. The late Gery Krewson, with input from Mike Fay and others, further refined the list for inclusion in Bradley Klein’s book Discovering Donald Ross, published in 2001. Audrey Moriarty became the Archivist in 2002 and did the yeoman job of organizing the papers of Ross, Pete Jones, and the many documents that were collected by Mike Fay. She was greatly aided by an Archives volunteer, John Root, who organized the scanning of all the documents and computerized all the raw data. In 2007, Jan Ludwig, a retired professor, became involved and did considerable research in further refinement of the list. Work continues on the list with Audrey, John, Jan, and Mike seeking and gathering further information. Notes to the 2018 Revision This revision of the Directory of Donald Ross Golf Courses is largely the result of research I have done at The Tufts Archives in Pinehurst, North Carolina, over the last ten years, with the help and advice of many other individuals. In particular, new facts often appear after a representative of a Ross club sends a request for information to the Archives; I want to thank those people for prompting me to additional investigation. If my also encouraging them to dig deeper has sometimes helped to increase our mutual knowledge of Ross and his courses, that is so much the better. There are three individuals I need to thank for helping with my research: Paul Dunn, Chris Buie and Sven Nilsen; they have contributed significantly to the accuracy of this list, and to our knowledge of Ross’s work. Many fellow members of the Donald Ross Society, especially Michael Fay and Brad Becken, have provided insights into this or that detail about various Ross courses; they also deserve my thanks. Finally, my research could not have been done without the resources of The Tufts Archives and the friendly assistance of the professionals who work there: Audrey Moriarty, Melissa Bielby, Lori Wright and Kay Lund. Fellow long-time Archives volunteer John Root and Donald Ross Society colleague John Stiles helped in many ways, including the formatting and presentation of this listing. It is of the very nature of projects like this one that they are never really completed; therefore, comments and criticisms, corrections and additions, are always welcome, to be sent to me via [email protected]. The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Established 1756 Join us for the John A. Fraser Memorial Golf Tournament the Society’s 76th Annual Tournament St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 The 76th Annual St. Andrew’s Society Golf Tournament will take us back to the birthplace of golf in America and home to our Society’s very first golf outing in 1945: St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. The history of Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is replete with “firsts” in American golf. Saint Andrew’s hosted the first U.S. Amateur and “Open” Championships. It was a founding member (along with The Country Club, the Chicago Golf Club, the Newport Country Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) of the United States Golf Association. In 1900 Saint Andrew’s member Charles E. Sands won the first Men’s Olympic Golf Championship at the Paris Games. The magnificent golf course of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club has been shaped by the skill and imagination of three renowned designers over the course of its nearly 115 years of operation. The first design of the Saint Andrew’s Mount Hope course was the work of William Henry Tucker Sr. who had joined the professional staff in 1895. Having apprenticed under Tom Dunn, whose U.K. based firm was, at the time, the most active golf course construction company in the world, “Willie” Tucker was well qualified to lay out the new course. The project was initiated in 1896; the course officially opened in the summer of 1897.

  • Ron Arnst's HMG Course Collection Summaries
HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.
