The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Established 1756

Join us for the John A. Fraser Memorial Tournament the Society’s 76th Annual Tournament

St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Thursday, June 3rd, 2021

The 76th Annual St. Andrew’s Society Golf Tournament will take us back to the birthplace of golf in America and home to our Society’s very first golf outing in 1945: St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson.

The history of Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is replete with “firsts” in American golf. Saint Andrew’s hosted the first U.S. Amateur and “Open” Championships. It was a founding member (along with , the , the Newport Country Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) of the United States Golf Association. In 1900 Saint Andrew’s member Charles E. Sands won the first Men’s Olympic Golf Championship at the Paris Games.

The magnificent of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club has been shaped by the skill and imagination of three renowned designers over the course of its nearly 115 years of operation.

The first design of the Saint Andrew’s Mount Hope course was the work of William Henry Tucker Sr. who had joined the professional staff in 1895. Having apprenticed under Tom Dunn, whose U.K. based firm was, at the time, the most active golf course construction company in the world, “Willie” Tucker was well qualified to lay out the new course. The project was initiated in 1896; the course officially opened in the summer of 1897. Tucker would go on to design more than 100 golf courses across the U.S. during a career spanning more than 50 years. In 1928, the Saint Andrew’s board solicited James Braid, Scotland’s most famous and prolific golf course designer, for suggestions and improvements. A number of Braid’s recommendations were implemented in 1929, making Saint Andrews the only American member of the more than 400 clubs that comprise the Association of James Braid Golf Courses. Today’s layout, a challenging 6600 yard, 71, 18 hole course rated at 146, is largely the product of a Jack Nicklaus Signature redesign undertaken over the years 1983-85. But a number of the original holes remain in play, largely unchanged. And a number of holes have been subsequently refined in an unceasing effort to enhance the aesthetic beauty of the course and enrich the playing experience.

FORMAT Team Best Ball: Each member of a four-person team will play his or her own ball from tee to green, and the two lowest handicapped scores from each hole will be combined and recorded as the team’s score.

Individual Stroke Play: Each player will also be competing for individual Low Gross, 2nd Low Gross, and Low Net awards.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Players are invited to use the practice facilities after 11:00 AM. A buffet lunch will be available commencing at 11:30 AM and play will begin at 1:00 PM sharp with a shotgun start. Following golf at approximately 5:45pm there will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, awards and the presentation of the haggis piped in by Larry Cole the St Andrews Society Piper.

On behalf of the SASNY Golf Committee, we’re looking forward to welcoming you, your team, and your guests to the John A. Fraser Memorial Golf Tournament, our 76th Annual Tournament at Saint Andrews Golf Club on Thursday, June 3rd.

Yours aye,

Charlie Zabriskie & Ian Tracy SASNY Golf Committee Co-Chairs

John A. Fraser, 82nd President of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York

There are few Society activities in which John had not played an important role. He gave considerable time and effort on behalf of the Saint Andrew's Society and was a great friend to the Membership serving as Secretary, Chairman of the Board of Managers, and President from 1971-1981. An active member of the Standing Committee, he also served as Chairman of the Budget Committee, and was appointed chairman of the Society's Scholarship Program from 1983 to 1992. A keen golfer, he won the President's Cup at the annual Saint Andrew's tournament on several occasions and served on the Golf Committee for many years. The Society's annual golf tournament is now named in his honor.
