Once Called America's Versailles, Newport, Rhode Island's Charm Still
Once called America’s Versailles, Newport, Rhode Island’s charm still lies in its National Registered Historic Landmark District. It is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island, 37 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island. The population of Newport is approximately 25,000. Newport gives a picture of America’s Gilded Age with palatial mansions where the rich built summer homes that were more like hotels. The Breakers, Elms, Rosecliff and Marble House are on most tourists’ agendas when in the area. Other sites to see are Rose Island Lighthouse, Rough Point, Cliff Walk and Newport’s Rocky Coastline. When it comes to historic preservation, Doris Duke is remembered by locals with much admiration. Born in 1912, Ms. Duke was the daughter of an American tobacco tycoon. Her philanthropic interests were as varied as her world travels, social life and interest in the arts. Until her death in 1992, Doris Duke was a major player in preserving more than 80 historic buildings in Newport. Today the Duke Charitable Foundation still exists and sponsors many social and health concerns. Newport was one of the earliest settlements in Rhode Island, along with Providence and Portsmouth. Newport was founded in 1639. It began as a beacon for religious tolerance and political freedom. People who had been persecuted in Europe heard of Newport’s acceptance and came to live and work there. An important seaport town during the 18th century, Newport played an important part in what was known as the Triangle Trade (1739‐1760). From sugar and molasses converted to rum and shipped to Africa for slaves, fortunes were made by those in that business. -
The Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York
The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Established 1756 Join us for the John A. Fraser Memorial Golf Tournament the Society’s 76th Annual Tournament St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 The 76th Annual St. Andrew’s Society Golf Tournament will take us back to the birthplace of golf in America and home to our Society’s very first golf outing in 1945: St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. The history of Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is replete with “firsts” in American golf. Saint Andrew’s hosted the first U.S. Amateur and “Open” Championships. It was a founding member (along with The Country Club, the Chicago Golf Club, the Newport Country Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) of the United States Golf Association. In 1900 Saint Andrew’s member Charles E. Sands won the first Men’s Olympic Golf Championship at the Paris Games. The magnificent golf course of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club has been shaped by the skill and imagination of three renowned designers over the course of its nearly 115 years of operation. The first design of the Saint Andrew’s Mount Hope course was the work of William Henry Tucker Sr. who had joined the professional staff in 1895. Having apprenticed under Tom Dunn, whose U.K. based firm was, at the time, the most active golf course construction company in the world, “Willie” Tucker was well qualified to lay out the new course. The project was initiated in 1896; the course officially opened in the summer of 1897. -

Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”. -

How Narragansett Bay Shaped Rhode Island
How Narragansett Bay Shaped Rhode Island For the Summer 2008 issue of Rhode Island History, former director of the Naval War College Museum, Anthony S. Nicolosi, contributed the article, “Rear Admiral Stephen B. Luce, U.S.N, and the Coming of the Navy to Narragansett Bay.” While the article may prove too specialized to directly translate into your classroom, the themes and topics raised within the piece can fit easily into your lesson plans. We have created a handful of activities for your classes based on the role that Narragansett Bay has played in creating the Rhode Island in which we now live. The first activity is an easy map exercise. We have suggested a link to a user-friendly map, but if you have one that you prefer, please go ahead and use it! The goal of this activity is to get your students thinking about the geography of the state so that they can achieve a heightened visual sense of the bay—to help them understand its fundamental role in our development. The next exercise, which is more advanced, asks the students to do research into the various conflicts into which this country has entered. It then asks them, in groups, to deduce what types of ships, weapons, battles and people played a part in each of these wars, and of course, how they relate to Narragansett Bay. We hope that your students will approach the end result creatively by styling their charts after maritime signal “flags.” Exploring the Ocean State Rhode Island is the smallest state, measuring forty-eight miles from North to South and thirty-seven miles from east to west. -
