Golf has been played over the grounds at Baltusrol for twelve decades, first on a rudimentary nine-hole course, then on the “Old Course” of 1895, and now on the Lower and Upper Courses, designed and built by A.W. Tillinghast between 1918 and 1922. Baltusrol’s golfing grounds have been an evolving landscape. The courses have advanced to stay current with technological and player skill improvements in the game.

  • The Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York
The Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Established 1756 Join us for the John A. Fraser Memorial Golf Tournament the Society’s 76th Annual Tournament St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Thursday, June 3rd, 2021 The 76th Annual St. Andrew’s Society Golf Tournament will take us back to the birthplace of golf in America and home to our Society’s very first golf outing in 1945: St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson. The history of Saint Andrew’s Golf Club is replete with “firsts” in American golf. Saint Andrew’s hosted the first U.S. Amateur and “Open” Championships. It was a founding member (along with The Country Club, the Chicago Golf Club, the Newport Country Club and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club) of the United States Golf Association. In 1900 Saint Andrew’s member Charles E. Sands won the first Men’s Olympic Golf Championship at the Paris Games. The magnificent golf course of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club has been shaped by the skill and imagination of three renowned designers over the course of its nearly 115 years of operation. The first design of the Saint Andrew’s Mount Hope course was the work of William Henry Tucker Sr. who had joined the professional staff in 1895. Having apprenticed under Tom Dunn, whose U.K. based firm was, at the time, the most active golf course construction company in the world, “Willie” Tucker was well qualified to lay out the new course. The project was initiated in 1896; the course officially opened in the summer of 1897.

  • Ron Arnst's HMG Course Collection Summaries
HISTORY MAKER GOLF Championship Golf Game • Course Summaries Course Collection ONE Blackjack GC, Las Vegas NV / based on TPC SUMMERLIN TPC Summerlin’s layout, carved from a magnificent swath of rugged desert terrain by renowned golf course architect Bobby Weed, provides a good reference for the Blackjack GC. TPC Summerlin’s lush bentgrass greens, numerous water features and an abundance of pine trees all contrast dramatically with undisturbed desert washes. The course features four closing holes that deliver top flight golf drama. The final charge begins with the par 4, 15th hole – a drivable par 4 that will temp most players. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots. The 16th hole is a relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. Only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. A challenging and un-nerving par-3, the 17th hole plays downhill with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground. The 18th is a well-designed and strategic finishing hole which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back.

  • Golf Is Once Again a Family Affair at the 2020 Champion of Champions
GOLF IS ONCE AGAIN A FAMILY AFFAIR AT THE 2020 CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Park Ridge, Illinois, October 8, 2020 By Dennis LaLiberty Patrick Keegan of Morris Country Club fashioned a steady one over par round to earn a slim but solid victory in the Richard E. Peterson Champion of Champions tournament played at Park Ridge Country Club. There was plenty of competition as 72 golfers stepped up to the first tee, with three competitors finishing at two over par, just one stroke behind Keegan, who spent a nervous 60 minutes as leader in the clubhouse while his closest competitors were still out on the course. Keegan designed his game plan after one practice round the previous Sunday and executed it with workmanlike consistency. As so often happens, it was the Park Ridge course’s “Last Mile,” the four finishing holes, which proved decisive. The 18th hole did take its toll on Keegan, who came to the tee at even par and left at one over after his third bogey in a round that featured birdies at #’s 2 and 13, with the previous two bogies coming at #’s 7 and 10. For most of the day it looked as if Brian Hickey of Edgewood Valley Country Club might become the second lefthander to win since Park Ridge became the host club, but the final two holes proved his undoing. Hickey came to #17 at one under par and left #18 at two over after a double at #17 and bogey at #18. Hickey’s playing partner, Brian Barrett of Royal Melbourne entered the “Last Mile” at plus one, but recorded bogey at #15, then just missed a redeeming 6 footer for birdie at #16, which, after he played the last two holes in regulation, produced his two over round.

  • West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker
West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker 1933: Johnny Javins, the pro at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, defeated pro I. C. ""Rocky''' Schorr of Bluefield Country Club in an 18-hole playoff at Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston to win the first West Virginia Open. Javins shot a 76 in the playoff while Schorr had an 82. They agreed to split first and second place money but Javins got the trophy donated by George C. Weimer of St. Albans. Javins and Schorr had tied after 72 holes of medal play with 302 scores. Schorr held a five-stroke lead over the field and an 11-stroke edge over Javins after two rounds but faltered on the second 36-hole day. Schorr's troubles started when he took a nine on the par-four third hole, needing five strokes to get out of a trap. Javins began his comeback with a 69 in the third round to pick up all 11 strokes on Schorr. The West Virginia Professional Golfers Association was formed in a meeting a month before the tournament, with Schorr the first president. • Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent
Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent About the Club Columbia Golf Club was organized in the District of Columbia in September of 1898. The game of golf was introduced with three holes played around the Club in 1898 but the first property was sold in 1909. The Club was reformed into Columbia Country Club by 200 of its original members and by 1911 the club had selected its present location and constructed a Clubhouse and golf course. Columbia Country Club’s golf course was designed by member Dr. Walter Harban assisted by Herbert Barker, professional of Garden City Golf Club. Walter Travis amended the course in 1917 and although the course’s reconstruction involved changing features it remained true to the original design and is the basis of the routing of the Columbia Country Club course as it exists today. Championship golf has a home at Columbia Country Club including the 1921 US Open Championship won by Jim Barnes. The runner up was none other than Fred McLeod, Columbia Country Club’s first head professional who was an accomplished professional golfer. The Club has hosted a number of other state, regional and national golf championships, including the U. S. Boys Amateur Championship won by Brian Harman in 2003. The Club will host its 3rd USGA championship this summer with the 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in July. The course is parkland style and features ryegrass fairways and tees and poa annua greens. The course plays from 5,191 yards to 6,808 yards with par of 70 for men and 74 for ladies.
