Practical Information for Delegates ALTE 51st Meeting & Conference Day 11th – 13th April 2018 – Cluj-Napoca, Romania Practical information for delegates Welcome to Cluj-Napoca! Welcome to Cluj-Napoca, the unofficial capital and the official heart of Transylvania! Cluj-Napoca (or Cluj) is a university city with more than 70.000 students, who bring dynamism and liveliness to the place. Rich history, cultural events and good food – you can find them all here. We welcome you with an exciting programme of the ALTE event, a nice tour through the city centre and social events. Currency The Romanian currency is called leu (pl. lei) or RON and its value is approximately 1 euro = 4,6 lei. You can change euro to lei in any bank, in exchange houses or at ATMs (including upon arrival at the airport). Travel Information The easiest way to reach Cluj is by plane. The city is connected directly to more than 40 destinations around Europe and the world. If you have enough time, you can take the train or you can drive here; however, if you choose one of these options, be prepared for unexpected stops and possible delays. By plane You can fly directly to Cluj from numerous cities in Europe (http://airportcluj.ro/passenger-information/destinatii?id_limba=2). You can also fly to Bucharest or Budapest and get from there to Cluj. However, if you travel through Bucharest, it would not be such a good idea to try and reach Cluj by train. You might actually miss the conference and get here by the time everyone else is leaving. There are between 8 and 10 flights from Bucharest to Cluj every day (http://www.bucharestairports.ro/). From the airport to town Once you get to the airport in Cluj, take bus no. 8 (runs every 20 minutes) or trolleybus no. 5 (runs every 10 minutes). They will take you to the centre of the town (the distance is of 8 km), for a fare of 2 lei (less than 50 eurocents). You can get tickets from kiosks, from ticket machines or by SMS (before getting on the bus, send a message to 7479 with the number of the bus you are getting on). The journey takes about 30 minutes (http://www.ctpcj.ro). You can also take a taxi. You will find one at the exit from the international arrivals terminal. The journey will cost maximum 10 euros from the airport to the door of your hotel. Only take company taxis (avoid, however, Activ Taxi) and ask the driver about the price first. You can download the app Clever Taxi on your phone, which you can then use for ordering a taxi, confirming the order and tracking the trip to your destination. 2 By train There are train connections to most Romanian cities, including fast InterCity trains to Oradea, Timi oara, Bra ov, and Bucharest. The average trip from Cluj to Budapest is around 8 hours. Cluj to Bucharest can vary between 8 and 14 hours. When planning a trainș trip in Romania,ș please keep in mind that you need to allow 2 hours for each hundred kilometers of journey. By car The European road E60 links Cluj-Napoca to Bucharest and Bra ov to the south, Oradea and Budapest to the west, through Bor customs. E81 leads to the north and to Bra ov and Bucharest to the south. E58 links Cluj-Napocaș to Baia Mare. ș ș 3 Maps & directions Faculty of Letters, 31 Horea St. (venue) This map indicates the Faculty of Letters in relation with the train station and Mihai Viteazu Square, in the centre of the town. 4 Faculty of Letters – Museum Square (Piața Muzeului) Museum Square is the meeting point for the city tour. meeting point if you want to be in the city centre. 5 minute walk from Museum Square is Unirii Square (Piața Unirii), the best 5 Faculty of Letters – Capitoliu Restaurant Lunch will be served at the Capitoliu Restaurant (Str. ETHNICITY AND DENOMINATION – ORTHODOXISM AND CATHOLICISM NICHIFOR CRAINIC AND “GÎNDIREA”. NATIONALISM AND ORTHODOXISM IN INTERWAR ROMANIA (I) IONUŢ BILIUŢĂ 1. Prolegomena After 1918, the struggle to define the Romanian ethnicity became bitterer than ever. A strong two-folded debate developed between the Westernizers and the traditionalists. People like Nichifor Crainic from “Gîndirea” started to publish extensively on the relation between Romanian culture, the Romanian specificity, the village and Orthodoxy to shape a traditionalist view regarding the character of a future Romanian culture. Continuing the 19th century project of the Junimists emphasizing an organic culture starting from the village, Nichifor Crainic framed a new nationalist project and that project was the birth of the Romanian culture in the category of Orthodox spirituality. The aim of this article is to lay out the way in which Orthodoxy is present in the nationalist discourse of Nichifor Crainic. I will point out that Orthodoxy played a major role in Nichifor Crainic’s conception of nationalism providing a spiritual background for any definition of the Romanian nation. Another aim is to determine that the Romanian traditionalist camp, represented by Nichifor Crainic, did not have a unitary discourse about the relation between Romanianness and Orthodoxy. The fact that Nichifor Crainic’s speech about the relation between Orthodoxy, the village and the nation changed dramatically during the interwar period is a proof that behind Nichifor Crainic’s nationalist Orthodoxism there were strong political sympathies. As Moeller van den Bruck in Germany1, Crainic began his political career from a neutral position, that of an intellectual uninterested in the political torments of his age, and he ended up as one of the first ideologues of the Romanian Fascist yoke.

ENGEL KÁROLY Hídverők példamutatása „Ha már felragyogott a nap első sugára, vajon meddig fog érni..." — köszön tötte Emil Isac a két világháború közötti korszak egyik magyar fordításban megje lent román költői antológiáját, amelyet a románok és magyarok között szövődő kap csolatok jelentős állomásának tekintett. A szónoki kérdés formájában parafrazált Shakespeare-idézet azonban ma sem vesztett időszerűségéből, mikor a Romániai Magyar Irodalmi Lexikon szerkesztésé vel az elmúlt fél évszázad hazai magyar művelődési törekvéseinek minden eddiginél átfogóbb szintézisére készülünk. Az összkép sok jelentős részlete tisztázódott kétség telenül már eddig is, de számtalan érdekes momentum vár még felelevenítésre. Mennyire feledésbe ment például azoknak erőfeszítése, akik „a hajnal emberei" módjára, mihelyt a fegyverbe öltözött Európa előtt felderengett a béke remény sugára, a gyűlöletbe béklyózott lelkek felszabadításán kezdtek munkálkodni.

STUDIA UBB GEOGRAPHIA, LVI, 2, 2011 CLUJ-NAPOCA. A STUDY IN ELECTORAL GEOGRAPHY. THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, 2009 V. SURD 1, ADINA PU 1CA 1U1, L. BRUCKNER 1 ABSTRACT. – Cluj-Napoca. A Study in Electoral Geography. The Presidential Elections, 2009. The analysis of the population’s electoral behavior has only been a subject of interest in our country after the abolition of the socialist political-social system. This paper describes the differences in and coagulations of electoral preferences in the population of the city of Cluj-Napoca during the 2009 presidential elections. There were 156 permanent and 16 special polling stations set up in Cluj-Napoca, represented in both graphical and tabular form, in a suggestive and sufficiently statistically accurate manner. Keywords: 2009 presidential elections, Cluj-Napoca Romania, polling stations, voter turnout. 1. INTRODUCTION Cluj-Napoca has a residential population of 306,000 inhabitants. A seasonal student population of over 100,000 individuals needs to be added to it. In terms of national urban hierarchy, Cluj-Napoca ranks second after Romania's capital, together with Iasi, Galati, Constanta, Craiova, Brasov and Timisoara. Due to both the high concentration of specialized services and highly qualified individuals (various university degrees, numerous medical, juridical, cultural and mass-media institutions) and its intellectual tradition, Cluj-Napoca draws its resources from the whole of Transylvania. Even today it continues to be figuratively called a "provincial capital" (i. e., the capital city of Transylvania) (Fig. 1). The city also enjoys a great potential due to its geographical position, at the contact between the Apuseni Mountains, the Transylvanian Plain and the Somes Plateau.

De la spaţiul de exprimare la judecăți estetice scrieri literare arădene From the expression space to aesthetic assessment. Arad literary writings Rodica Floare Cândea, Universitatea „Aurel Vlaicu”, Arad Abstract The study that we did, with the title „From the expression space to aesthetic assessment. Arad literary writings” it’s structured in three segments: 1 – Chronicles – Typologies – Echos – Gleans 2 – Literary Salons – Social soires – Persons from Arad gratuitous forgotten 3 - Instead of Conclusions – Closer to them The essay is preceded by an Argument, wherethrough we try a review and revolvment of the publications from that period, that we are reffering at. We’ve selected, as possible, the quintessential and orientation of te publications and we gave a special color to the visit of some writers or publicists in Arad which, by the pitoresque of their presence, were noticed, by articles in the local press and not only, or they simply remained in the memory of the persons they’ve met. Lowly, we consider that through this ARAD WRITINGS, we will bring to light the evanescent and spiritual evolution of the City from the Mures, in the social, economic and cultural stormy period, and the names we mentioned, with the activities that animated them, will open other research paths.

The sports life of the first Trade Academy of Cluj was an important chapter of the local sport history in the period before 1918. When the institution was founded special attention was paid to the teaching of physical education, and 35 years later the sports club of the institution grew into a well-known association nationwide, mostly due to football and skiing. The sports life at the academy started with providing physical exercise. From the moment when the institutions’ sports club was founded the students started taking up the fashionable sports of the time such as skating, cycling and football. As football was gaining ground, more and more people played this team game, and by 1905 the team of the academy had become the best football association in Transylvania. But together with the closing of the institution in 1919, the sports association ceased, as well.
