While artistic creativity is seen as stemming from the psychology of the creator, there is a tendency to deny the artist possession of direct or rational access to its understanding. Both attitudes have their roots in romantic art theory. These attitudes imply, on the one hand, that the artist's psyche is the locus of creation, and, on the other, that intuition and the unconscious play the major roles. Such ideas remained prevalent in the twentieth century, as attested, for example, by the famous talk given in April 1957 by Marcel Duchamp under the title "The Creative Act," which defined the artist as a "mediumistic being."[1] This element of contradiction explains the frequently ambivalent treatment of artists' accounts of their own creation: although we recognize that they possess a privileged and even unique position, we tend to dismiss their explanations as "rationalizations" and to prefer independent material evidence of the genesis of their works, such as studies or traces of earlier stages.

In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France and Tahiti and the synthesis of these contexts into his paintings.

To accomplish this goal, the members of the RNU Board have established the following expectations for learning. • All backgrounds and cultures are respected. • During class discussions, everyone feels welcome to participate and a free exchange of ideas takes place. • All members of the class anive on time and leave the class only on breaks or in case of mnergency. • Distractions are kept to a minimum. Cell phones and other electronic devices are turned off in class, labs, and library. Students remain seated throughout class and refrain from talking with classmates while another class member or the instructor has the floor. • Each student turns in work that is his or her own. • Consideration is always given to other classes that are taking place in adjoining classrooms. • At the end of a class, the members of the class and the instructor leave the classroom in good condition so that the next class can begin without disruption. A kdoví, zda se toto málo, až bude dáno k dispozici ostatním, nestane n ěč ím velkým?“ (Paul Gauguin) Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin se narodil 7. června 1848 v rue Notre-Dame de Lorette č. 52 (dnes č. 56) v Pa říži. Jeho matka, Aline Marie Chazalová, byla dcerou rytce André-Françoise Chazala (odsouzeného na dvacet let za pokus o vraždu své ženy) a Flory Tristanové, francouzské spisovatelky a bojovnice za práva d ělník ů a žen, jež byla nemanželskou dcerou špan ělského šlechtice. Gauguin ův otec Clovis p ůsobil jako redaktor republikánského deníku Le National. Po zvolení Ludvíka Napoleonského prezidentem se obával pronásledování kv ůli politickým názor ům, proto se v srpnu roku 1849 celá rodina vydala do Peru. B ěhem plavby Clovis Gauguin v dnešním Punta Arenas v Patagonii podlehl srde čnímu záchvatu, Aline Gauguinová s dětmi (Paulem a jeho o rok starší sestrou Fernande-Marcelline Marií) našla úto čišt ě u bratra svého d ěde čka v Lim ě. Rodina de Tristan y Moscoso byla nejen velmi bohatá, ale i politicky významná, ze ť d ěde čkova bratra dona Pia, don José Rufino Echenique, se roku 1851 stal prezidentem Peru. Malý Paul Gauguin v Lim ě vyr ůstal v přepychu, v exotickém sv ětě plném barev, na který nemohl po celý svůj život zapomenout.
