PRESS RELEASE Genesis House Gallery 26 October 2011 GENESIS PUBLICATIONS & Reading Rooms Fine Limited Editions Since 1974 genesis-publications.com The Faces unveil their first book with an exhibition of photos. A nd new paintings by Ronnie Wood Surrey, UK, 26 October 2011 – Last night at Genesis House Gallery & Reading Rooms, two heroes of contemporary rock music came together to announce the launch of their new book: FACES 1969-75 . The legendary guitarist of the Jeff Beck Group, Faces and the Rolling Stones - Ronnie Wood - joined fellow band mate, former drummer for the Small Faces, Faces, and The Who - Kenney Jones - for a private celebration and unveiling of the Faces’ first official book. This November 2011, a new 8-week exhibition commemorates the book’s launch: Nearly 100 pages are blown up and reproduced on Genesis’s gallery walls. Visitors are invited to stroll through the Faces’ glory years from the band’s First Step in 1969 to their eventual split in 1975. Also on display are 5 new paintings by Ronnie Wood, seen for the very first time. Entitled ‘The Famous Flames Suite’ – the paintings capture the Rolling Stones in performance. ‘Making the book we went through so many photos it brought back memories and, when we were finished, I looked through it, and it actually brought a tear to my eye. I thought it was just me but then I spoke to Woody and he said exactly the same thing had happened to him.’ Kenney Jones ‘We were bored so much hanging around in places where they didn’t even know how to make a salad… It’s amazing how such great things can come out of being bored.’ Ronnie Wood Among hundreds of guests, Ronnie and Kenney were also joined by new Faces frontman, Mick Hucknall and artist Sir Peter Blake .

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. • “People Get Ready”
“People Get Ready” Excerpt from Lyrics By Curtis Mayfield People get ready, there's a train a comin' You don't need no baggage, you just get on board All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin' Don't need no ticket, you just thank the Lord Excerpt from the Chapter Essay by Craig Werner No song captures the feel of the early Movement better than Curtis Mayfield’s gospel-inflected “People Get Ready,” which culminates in an invitation to “get on board.” The center of a vibrant Chicago soul scene, which in terms of pure talent rivaled Detroit and Memphis, Mayfield embodied the relationship between Civil Rights, gospel and soul. Known as "the gentle genius," Mayfield grew up attending the Traveling Souls Spiritualist Church, a storefront church pastured by his Grandmother on Chicago’s poverty-stricken West Side. The experienced shaped both his politics and his approach to music. “Gospel was your foundation,” Mayfield said when asked about the inspiration for his songwriting. “All you had to do was just change some few lyrics. ‘Keep on Pushing’ was intended, written as a gospel song. All I needed to do to lock it in with The Impressions was say ‘I’ve got my strength’ instead of “God gave me strength and it don’t make sense.’ Nothing else needed to be changed.” WWW.TEACHROCK.ORG That quiet determination was part of what made Mayfield’s music more than just background for the Movement. When Martin Luther King, Jr., launched an ultimately unsuccessful campaign targeting housing discrimination in Chicago, organizers tapped into The Impressions' local popularity even more directly.

Robert Knight was a kid from Palolo¯ when he fell for British rock— and his passion led to some of the best photography in rock ‘n’ roll 98 99 o understand just how resourceful and adventurous Robert Knight is, you have to cast your mind back to a time before the web connected everyone and everything, a time when there was far more mystery in the world. Information was random and scarce, and one’s whole life direction could be determined by a chance finding. Knight was 16 and exploring in Waikïkï one day in 1965 when he came across some music “Being a photographer of rock concerts magazines left behind by British tourists. The son of a Baptist is very similar to shooting a war,” says Knight, “because you can’t control minister, he’d grown up in Honolulu’s Pälolo valley, forbidden anything. The lighting keeps changing, the artist is moving around. You’re basically a sniper: A guy puts his head to watch movies and listen to rock music — not that there was up, you shoot it. You can’t be wasting time trying to figure out exposures.” much rock music in Honolulu in those days, with the airwaves Knight loved to photograph Mick Jagger (seen here playing a show in Honolulu in 1973). “Smart. Just smart,” he says of full of the Kingston Trio and Jan & Dean. Knight pored over him. “Also, he’s an absolute fitness freak.” The singer, says Knight, played characters on stage, one way to handle the magazines and their pictures of strange-looking people his shyness.

  • Why Doesn't Anybody Write Anything About Glam Rock?
WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT GLAM ROCK? Jon Stratton In discussions of post-war British youth cultures glam rock gets very little attention. For example, in their seminal work on British youth cultural forms, Hall et al (1976:54), make only one passing reference to this subculture. In a list of subcultural possessions and objects they refer to: '... the glitter costumes of the Bowrieites ... .' Similarly, Brake (l980:80) in his outlines of British post-war youth cultures gives the culture half a page while skinheads get two pages and rockers one page. Hebdige, (1979) in Subculture: the meaning of style, does spend about two and a half pages looking at glam rock but most of this space is taken up with an analysis of the images of David Bowie. Hebdige writes of Bowie that: Certainly Bowie's position was devoid of any obvious political or counter-cultural significance ... (l979:6l). And Bowie's meta-message was escape — from class, from sex, from obvious commitment — into a fantasy past ... or a science-fiction future (1979:61). What is confusing for Hebdige about glam rock soon becomes clear: In glam-rock, at least amongst those artists placed, like Bowie and Roxy Music, at the more sophisticated end of the glitter spectrum, the subversive emphasis was shifted away from class and youth onto sexuality and gender-typing (1979:61-2). On the one hand, Hebdige can write so much about Bowie because glam rock's presentation of image as image lends itself to Hebdige's dominant semiotic method of analyzing cultural texts.
