Metro UK declared that "The latest album from Lagos born drumming ace reasserts his status as keeper of the Afrobeat key" while Observer Music Monthly said, "If you're wondering why Afrobeat is hip, start here." Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer and one of the continent's most influential musicians. His playing draws on four different styles - Highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian drumming-a unique and mighty sound. Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) Allen co-created Afrobeat-the hard driving, horn rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style, which became a dominant force in African music and such, an influence worldwide. Afrobeat is currently enjoying an upsurge of interest around the world and for fans of hip-hop, funk and jazz, Tony Allen, holder of the Afrobeat flame, is today revered as its seminal living figure. ‘Secret Agent,' produced by Allen himself, was recorded with his hard-schooled touring band, which comprises musicians from Nigeria, Cameroon, Martinique and France. The music is squarely in the Afrobeat tradition-combining rhythmic tenor guitar, funky keyboards, soulful call and response vocals, and fat, full-throated hard-riffing horns-with a few twists (including keyboard player and arranger Fixi's accordion on some tracks). At its heart of course, is the beat itself, even more prominent now than it was in Fela Kuti's legendary band Afrika 70. Allen drives the music on, straight as an arrow, in a loose-limbed ragged shuffle, fusing the cross rhythms into one irresistible forward motion. The songs on Secret Agent stay true to Afrobeat's original, trademark embrace of protest lyrics. "Pariwo" (shout, make some noise) and "Elewon Po" (too many prisoners) urge resistance to oppression. Others like "Nina Lowo" (money is to be spent) and "Atuwaba" (no matter if things are bad, they'll get better), are based on traditional folk proverbs. Some are irresistible exhortations to party - "Ijo" (dance) and "Alutere" (the message the drums transmit) celebrate Afrobeat in general and Allen's genius in particular. "Fela had a different way of writing," says Allen. "He wrote like a singer. I write like a drummer." Tony Allen will tour North America early this summer. In the meantime, Secret Agent is an invitation from this extraordinary drumming force to look for the familiar in the seemingly exotic. As Q Magazine (UK) put it, "At nearly 70 the man Brian Eno reckons is perhaps the greatest drummer that ever lived is reveling in his heritage, and it's contagious." ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Nigeria Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1940, of mixed Nigerian and Ghanaian parentage, Tony Allen taught himself to play by listening to records made by the American jazz drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach. He began working as a professional musician in 1960, gigging around Lagos and variously playing highlife and jazz. Today living in Paris, Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer and one of it's most influential musicians, the man who with Fela Anikulapo Kuti created Afrobeat-the hard driving, James Brown funk-infused, and politically engaged style that became such a dominant force in African music and whose influence continues to spread today. Specifically, it focuses on musical engagements between, on the one hand, the Caribbean and West Africa and, on the other, the United States and Southern Africa. It argues that the influence of diasporan music on modern African music, especially popular music, has been immense. These influences and exchanges have created a complex tapestry of musical Afro- internationalism and Afro-modernism and music has been a critical site, a soundscape, in the construction of new diasporan and African identities.

  • Top 12 Soul Jazz and Groove Releases of 2006 on the Soul Jazz Spectrum
Top 12 Soul Jazz and Groove Releases of 2006 on the Soul Jazz Spectrum Here’s a rundown of the Top 12 albums we enjoyed the most on the Soul Jazz Spectrum in 2006 1) Trippin’ – The New Cool Collective (Vine) Imagine a big band that swings, funks, grooves and mixes together R&B, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, Latin and more of the stuff in their kitchen sink into danceable jazz. This double CD set features the Dutch ensemble in their most expansive, challenging effort to date. When you can fill two discs with great stuff and nary a dud, you’re either inspired or Vince Gill. These guys are inspired and it’s impossible to not feel gooder after listening to Trippin.’ Highly recommended. 2) On the Outset – Nick Rossi Set (Hammondbeat) It’s a blast of fresh, rare, old air. You can put Rossi up there on the Hammond B3 pedestal with skilled survivors like Dr. Lonnie Smith and Reuben Wilson. This album is relentlessly grooving, with no ballad down time. If you think back to the glory days of McGriff and McDuff, this “set” compares nicely. 3) The Body & Soul Sessions – Phillip Saisse Trio (Rendezvous) Pianist Saisse throws in a little Fender Rhodes and generally funks up standards and covers some newer tunes soulfully and exuberantly. Great, great version of Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.” Has that feel good aura of the old live Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann sides, even though a studio recording. 4) Step It Up – The Bamboos (Ubiquity) If you’re old enough or retro enough to recall the spirit and heart of old soul groups like Archie Bell and the Drells, these Aussies are channeling that same energy and nasty funk instrumentally.

2006-2007 http://www.elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle0607/October11thP23Saosi... Saosin by Neelofer Lodhy, Editor Finally! After such a long wait of anticipation and excitement, Saosin is finally back with their new self-titled album! After the release of an EP (2003), Saosin finally decided to release their first album. The band's genre is listed as post-hardcore and emo. Originally from Newport Beach, the band formed back in 2003, and is signed with record label Capitol Records. The band's original vocalist Anthony Green left Saosin and later joined a well-known band today called Circa Survive after the release of their first EP. Saosin definitely did a great job finding a new vocalist Cove Reber, because Cove and Anthony sound extremely similar, especially if you are hearing both bands for the first time. After a change of three band members, Saosin now consists of Cove Reber on lead vocals, Beau Berchell as guitarist and vocals, Justin Shekoski on guitar and vocals as well, Chris Sorenson on bass and vocals, and Alex Rodriguez on drums. Saosin's initial discography consisted of EP's such as Translating the Name (2003), Translating the Name Acoustic (2003), their self-titled Saosin EP, and finally their first real album also self-titled Saosin (2006). Saosin's current singles include songs off the EP such as the very well known Bury Your Head (included on the new album), Seven Years, I Want to Hear Another Fast Song, also titled Sleepers (also included on the new album), and the newest addition off the fresh album, Voices.
