CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 1 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting Core Principles and Potential for Impact Paul Malhotra A Senior Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation in the Honors Program Liberty University Spring 2013 CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 2 Acceptance of Senior Honors Thesis This Senior Honors Thesis is accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the Honors Program of Liberty University. ______________________________ John D. Kinchen III, D.M.A. Thesis Chair ______________________________ Michael Babcock, Ph.D. Committee Member ______________________________ Mr. Don Marsh, M.S. Committee Member ______________________________ Marilyn Gadomski, Ph.D. Assistant Honors Director ______________________________ Date CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 3 Abstract A cross-over song has been defined as a song written by a Christian artist aimed at a mainstream audience. An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 4 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting An exploration of Christian cross-over music can provide an objective framework for evaluating songs and developing guidelines for Christian songwriters so they can enhance their effectiveness in communicating with their audiences.

  • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 30, 2008 RELIENT K CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY WITH THE BIRD AND THE BEE SIDES EP, SCHEDULED FOR JULY 1st RELEASE ON GOTEE RECORDS 26-Track EP Includes 13 Brand New Songs Plus Career-Spanning Collection Of B-Sides; Online Scavenger Hunt Kicks Off June 16th, Giving Fans A Chance To Download Additional B-sides For Free Band Co-Headlines Vans Warped Tour ’08, Kicking Off June 20th Relient K’s The Bird and the Bee Sides – scheduled for July 1st release by Gotee Records – is by far the most ambitious EP of the band’s career. In fact, with 26 songs (including 13 brand new ones) and a running time of 70 minutes, it may be one of the most ambitious EPs ever released, period. And, as improbable as it sounds, there’s still more: Prior to street date, Relient K will launch an online scavenger hunt that will give fans a chance to download numerous b-sides that will not be included on the disc. The hunt begins June 16th at the band’s MySpace site and will continue through June 30th. For additional information and clues, visit: http://www.myspace.com/relientk The band typically releases an EP between studio albums. So following Five Score And Seven Years Ago – which debuted at #6 on The Billboard 200 in 2007, becoming Relient K’s highest charting album to date – the guys decided to make their latest EP something of an alternate career retrospective, comprised of b-sides, demos and other rarities from its 10 year history.

  • Leila El Bashir Serious Listeners of Music Often Talk About Their Favorite Songs and Bands in Terms of Their Favorite Genres, Ho
THE DEATH OF PUNK: REINCARNATION OF A DEAD GENRE Leila El Bashir Serious listeners of music often talk about their favorite songs and bands in terms of their favorite genres, however, most listeners do not have a clear conception of what it means for a piece of music to be categorized in a specific genre. Genre is a form of classification that most people correlate strictly with musical style, that is, the way a song sounds. People do not realize that genres today are becoming more like artificial categories defined by the music industry and popular culture to commodify and commercialize music. This popular culture can be summed up to what Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, in The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception, terms the culture industry. They suggest that culture and its products, such as music, are being commodified and that culture as a common denominator already contains in its embryo that schematisation and process of cataloguing and classification which bring culture within the sphere of administration (7). In this way, genres can be viewed as a branch of the culture industry, being a form of classification that can be managed by culture administration. Therefore, one can see how culture and genre interact. Furthermore, David Brackett in his article, Musical meaning: genres, categories, and crossover, suggests how genres are more than musical style: Genres bring with them connotations about music and identity which may encode specific affective qualities such as conformity, rebelliousness, commercialism, selling out, art for arts sake; and may encode a whole variety of social characteristics (66).
