It provides historical and contextual background for the development of the vidding community, and explores the role of agency among this specialised audience community. Utilising semiotic theory, it offers a theoretical language for understanding the structure and function of remix videos. -
Piracy Or Productivity: Unlawful Practices in Anime Fansubbing

In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. Keywords: Japanese animation, anime, fansub, copyright, piracy Tiivistelmä Piratismia vai tuottavuutta: laittomat toimintatavat animen fanikäännöksissä Japanilaisen animaation eli animen suosio maailmalla on lyhyessä ajassa kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti. -
THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

MTO 16.3: Takehana, Review of the Social And
Volume 16, Number 3, August 2010 Copyright © 2010 Society for Music Theory Review of Nicola Dibben, Björk (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2009) Elise O. Takehana KEYWORDS: Nicola Dibben, Björk, Iceland, nationalism, globalism, technology, nature, popular music Received November 2009 [1] Björk Guðmundsdóttir’s works have consistently posed a challenge to pop and art music as well as to those critics who have explored her music. The broad diversity of her approach to media and genre has made her oeuvre particularly enigmatic. Nicola Dibben premises this key trait of Björk’s work, calling her a whole artist who “communicates her ideas through the integrated use of all media at her disposal” ( Dibben 2009 , 23). To uphold such an interpretation of Björk’s work and artistic position, Dibben veers from many previous texts on the pop artist that presuppose a chronological biography as its organizing structure. Instead she adopts a thematic approach to all her artistic projects regardless of genre or release date. She investigates Björk’s critical reception, dividing the book into themes surrounding many of the basic binaries the artist bridges, particularly her understanding of pop/avant-garde, nationalism/globalism, and nature/technology. By providing a concerted and accessible analysis of the artist’s music, Dibben adds a formalist dimension to past critiques of Björk’s work. Dibben’s book provides an in-depth academic treatment of the artist as both a cultural and musical figure of great importance. Björk offers an intriguing case study of the artist and adds to a continued conversation about the role of music in the face of digital utopianism and globalization that will assuredly be a standard for any subsequent study on Björk. -

Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media
Alternate Universe Fan Videos and the Reinterpretation of the Media Source Introduction According to the Francesca Coppa, American scholar and co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works1, fan videos are “a form of grassroots filmmaking in which clips from television shows and movies are set to music.”2 Fan videos are commonly referred to as: fanvid, songvid, vid, AMV (for Anime Music Video); their process of creation is called vidding and their editors (fan)vidders. While the “media tradition” described above in Francesca Coppa‟s definition is a crucial part of the fan video production, many other fan videos are created for anime, especially Asian ones (AMV), for video games (some of them called Machinima), or even for other subjects, from band tributes to other types of remix. The vidding tradition – in its current “shape” – goes back to the era of the first VCR; but the very first fan videos may be traced back to the seventies in a slideshow format. When channel mixers and numerous machines available to a large group of consumers emerged, this fan activity easily became an expanding one amongst the fan communities, who were often interested in new technology, whatever era it is. Vidding has now become a digital process, thanks to the expansion of computer and related technical means, including at least semiprofessional editing software. It seems relevant to point out how rare it is that a vidder goes through editing training when they begin to create fan videos, or even become a professional editor later on. Of course, exceptions exist, but vidding generally remains a hobby.
