Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States. -

The unit begins with students investigating what it means to represent information, and challenges students to design their own representation systems. Students then learn the ideas behind real-world systems used to represent complex information. Later lessons focus on the challenges that arise from digitizing information, such as the need to compress it, or questions of intellectual property. The unit project emphasizes the profound impact digital information has on modern life. UNIT PHILOSOPHY AND PEDAGOGY ESTABLISHING A STRONG CLASSROOM CULTURE: This unit is designed to be hands-on, collaborative, and exploratory. A major focus of the unit is building a positive classroom culture in which students work together, explore problems, and communicate about their thinking. Most lessons either feature physical manipulatives or a digital widget, and the bulk of lesson time should be spent with students exploring these tools together to develop an understanding of the concepts they highlight. The course intentionally does not start with programming since, in many classrooms, some students have experience with programming and others do not. Choosing to begin with digital information and the internet lets you build community in the room while exploring a topic that is likely to be accessible to all students. The supportive and inclusive classroom environment built in this unit should help set a positive tone that can be carried through the school year. -

“A Community Unlike Any Other”: Incorporating Fansubbers into Corporate Capitalism on Viki.com Taylore Nicole Woodhouse TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin Spring 2018 __________________________________________ Dr. Suzanne Scott Department of Radio-Television-Film Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Dr. Youjeong Oh Department of Asian Studies Second Reader ABSTRACT Author: Taylore Nicole Woodhouse Title: “A Community Unlike Another Other”: Incorporating Fansubbers into Corporate Capitalism on Viki.com Supervising Professors: Dr. Suzanne Scott and Dr. Youjeong Oh Viki.com, founded in 2008, is a streaming site that offers Korean (and other East Asian) television programs with subtitles in a variety of languages. Unlike other K-drama distribution sites that serve audiences outside of South Korea, Viki utilizes fan-volunteers, called fansubbers, as laborers to produce its subtitles. Fan subtitling and distribution of foreign language media in the United States is a rich fan practice dating back to the 1980s, and Viki is the first corporate entity that has harnessed the productive power of fansubbers. In this thesis, I investigate how Viki has been able to capture the enthusiasm and productive capacity of fansubbers. Particularly, I examine how Viki has been able to monetize fansubbing in while still staying competitive with sites who employee trained, professional translators. I argue that Viki has succeeded in courting fansubbers as laborers by co-opting the concept of the “fan community.” I focus on how Viki strategically speaks about the community and builds its site to facilitate the functioning of its community so as to encourage fansubbers to view themselves as semi-professional laborers instead of amateur fans. -

V prejšnji številki smo se dotaknili osnov, saj smo spoznali, kaj »anime« sploh je, v tokratnem uvodniku pa se bomo posvetili nekaterim novostim na SloAnime portalu, prenovljeni uradni strani slochan.com in navezi z multime- dijsko revijo »Medijska vzgoja in produkcija«. Kot smo že izvedeli v prejšnji številki, je SloAnime.org eden izmed redkih portalov v Sloveniji, ki navdušuje, razširja in informira sloven- ske ljubitelje z novostmi iz japonske scene o animejih, mangah, igrah in tudi igranih filmih. Diskusije na forumu so ključnega pomena, saj je kvalitetna diskusija merilo uspešnosti in navduševanja tudi med ljubitelji. Od prejšnje številke je minilo že štiri mesece in portal je imel v tem času kar precej zanimivih akcij, ki so poskušale animeje še približati vsem oboževalcem. Ustanovljen je bil poseben blog z imenom »Sekai« (slo: svet), katerega namen je sočasno pisanje več blogerjev o več različnih tema- tikah, ki se ne ne tičejo le animejev in mang. V današnjem času je bloganje postalo zelo popularno in v Sloveniji obstaja nekaj posebnih blogerskih agregatov, ki v ospredje postavljajo najboljše vpise na uporabniških blogih. Ker je DjJuvan s svojim blogom že od lanskega leta do danes naredil precej uspešnih prelomnic in se s svojimi animejsko usmerjenimi vsebinami pojavil na prvih straneh znanih agregatov, se mu je kmalu pridružilo k pisanju še nekaj animejskih navdušencev in počasi se je porodila ideja, da bi se pisalo skupen, obširnejši blog, kjer bi sočasno pisali zanimive vnose o splošnih tematikah in hkrati navduševali z animejsko usmerjenimi zanimivostmi. -

Fansub and Auto-Generated Subtitle: Indication of Translation Popular Culture? Subtitling has been a common practice and it develops over time. Subtitle, along with the advancement of technology, enables more people to perform subtitling activities and involves more products of technology. Fan subtitle (fansub) emerges as subtitling softwares can be owned and used by anyone. Automatically-generated subtitle is also nowadays available. The former is characterized by variances as indications of elements of popular culture while the latter deals with contemporary aspects of people‘s lives and is highly technological. This study attempts to initiate the idea of popular culture within translation. The studied material takes form of subtitle texts in movie uploaded on YouTube entitled Big Stan. Analysis was done to uncover features of the two types of subtitling practices and link them up to features of popular culture. The result reveals that fansub and YouTube auto-generated subtitle show features of popular culture. Keywords: fansub, auto-translated subtitle, YouTube, popular culture. 1. Introduction Subtitling practices have long been carried out in many countries in the world. Over time, subtitling is no longer only done to meet the needs of institutions and television stations and is no longer done by professionals who work for such institutions. Subtitling developed from what was once (and is until now) the realm of professional to the one entered by dilettantes. Subtitling has long been a realm of fans, which began with the awakening of groups of anime fans known as fansubbers.
