  • Piracy Or Productivity: Unlawful Practices in Anime Fansubbing

In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. Keywords: Japanese animation, anime, fansub, copyright, piracy Tiivistelmä Piratismia vai tuottavuutta: laittomat toimintatavat animen fanikäännöksissä Japanilaisen animaation eli animen suosio maailmalla on lyhyessä ajassa kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti.

The Skull Man Jumpchain The year is 1970 and a young man named Tatsuo Kagura is about to begin a rampage across Japan under the guise of The Skull Man. His parents, a pair of genius scientists dedicated to the “evolution of humanity”, performed many experiments on their young son in order to create the perfect example of Newmanity as part of the plans of the evil organisation The Syndicate. After they were murdered by his grandfather, Tatsuo was rescued by the shapeshifting Kaijin Garo. Will you abide his vicious vigilante vengeance quest? Or will you oppose this dark anti-hero? Or is the year 1988, where a only somewhat different Tatsuo will battle against the evil Rasputin and takes part in a trip into the world of shadows and the evil within all of us. Or perhaps it is even more recent, say 2007? But this is a very different Skull Man. Tatsuo and his father both slain, and the Skull Man suit (the source of the Skull Man's powers in this version of events) if found by a priest named Yoshio Kanzaki to battle the evil cult Byakureikai and it's evil experiments on humanity. This story begins with the death of Yoshio and the mantle of Skull Man taken over by Hayato Mikogami who may in fact be Tatsuo himself under a new identity. Regardless of when you arrive in Japan (your pick Jumper), you receive 1000 choice points and must choose your place in this world: Origins Drop-in Free You awaken in a dark alley in the city of Tokyo, your memories and body untouched from your last jump.

  • Japanese Animation Guide: the History of Robot Anime
Commissioned by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs Manga, Animation, Games, and Media Art Information Bureau Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime Compiled by Mori Building Co., Ltd. 2013 Commissioned by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs Manga, Animation, Games, and Media Art Information Bureau Japanese Animation Guide: The History of Robot Anime Compiled by Mori Building Co., Ltd. 2013 Addition to the Release of this Report This report on robot anime was prepared based on information available through 2012, and at that time, with the exception of a handful of long-running series (Gundam, Macross, Evangelion, etc.) and some kiddie fare, no original new robot anime shows debuted at all. But as of today that situation has changed, and so I feel the need to add two points to this document. At the start of the anime season in April of 2013, three all-new robot anime series debuted. These were Production I.G.'s “Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet," Sunrise's “Valvrave the Liberator," and Dogakobo and Orange's “Majestic Prince of the Galactic Fleet." Each was broadcast in a late-night timeslot and succeeded in building fanbases. The second new development is the debut of the director Guillermo Del Toro's film “Pacific Rim," which was released in Japan on August 9, 2013. The plot involves humanity using giant robots controlled by human pilots to defend Earth’s cities from gigantic “kaiju.” At the end of the credits, the director dedicates the film to the memory of “monster masters” Ishiro Honda (who oversaw many of the “Godzilla” films) and Ray Harryhausen (who pioneered stop-motion animation techniques.) The film clearly took a great deal of inspiration from Japanese robot anime shows.

  • Representations and Reality: Defining the Ongoing Relationship Between Anime and Otaku Cultures By: Priscilla Pham
Representations and Reality: Defining the Ongoing Relationship between Anime and Otaku Cultures By: Priscilla Pham Submitted to OCAD University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 2021 © Priscilla Pham, 2021 Abstract This major research paper investigates the ongoing relationship between anime and otaku culture through four case studies; each study considers a single situation that demonstrates how this relationship changes through different interactions with representation. The first case study considers the early transmedia interventions that began to engage fans. The second uses Takashi Murakami’s theory of Superflat to connect the origins of the otaku with the interactions otaku have with representation. The third examines the shifting role of the otaku from that of consumer to producer by means of engagement with the hierarchies of perception, multiple identities, and displays of sexualities in the production of fan-created works. The final case study reflects on the 2.5D phenomenon, through which 2D representations are brought to 3D environments. Together, these case studies reveal the drivers of the otaku evolution and that the anime–otaku relationship exists on a spectrum that teeters between reality and representation. i Acknowledgements I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my primary advisor, Ala Roushan, for her continued support and confidence in my writing throughout this paper’s development. Her constructive advice, constant guidance, and critical insights helped me form this paper. Thank you to Dr. David McIntosh, my secondary reader, for his knowledge on anime and the otaku world, which allowed me to change my perspective of a world that I am constantly lost in.

  • Samurai Champloo: Transnational Viewing Jiwon Ahn
Samurai Champloo: Transnational Viewing Jiwon Ahn From the original edition of How to Watch Television published in 2013 by New York University Press Edited by Ethan Thompson and Jason Mittell Accessed at nyupress.org/9781479898817 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND). 39 Samurai Champloo Transnational Viewing Jiwon Ahn Abstract: Television criticism usually addresses “what” TV is watched, and ofen “who” watches, but “where” TV is watched is less commonly considered vital to understanding it. In this look at the anime program Samurai Champloo, Jiwon Ahn argues for the importance of “where” to the meanings and pleasures of texts which—like anime—circulate in television’s global fows. Watching an imported or translated text on television is an increasingly ordinary experience in the current state of globalization. But what unique critical questions should we consider in order to make sense of such viewings?
