An anecdote that Mrs. Chase offered at a recent All-School Meeting seemed to underscore this point. Mrs. Chase said that, while walking on campus, she ran into two students who, to her amazement, did not even recognize her. Mrs. Chase’s responsibilities often take her away from campus and out of sight from the students she serves.

We do not primarily fault Mrs. Chase for this seeming lack of involvement in the everyday life of Andover students. She faces a variety of important responsibilities, many of which force her away from campus. Her present duties preclude her from establishing the connection with the student body that she would otherwise be able to establish.

That said, however, we cannot help but be concerned at the perceived rift between the Head of School – or, more broadly, the entire administration – and the faculty and student body. Andover’s primary goal is to educate students. Yet, as students, we are often led to feel that we are not as important to the school as its alumni and wealthy donors.

We can offer no easy solution to the problem. But we can say that it is a problem and that the Academy should spend some time looking into possible solutions – changes that would allow Mrs. Chase to spend more time on campus and around students. Because in the end, we are still a school, not an impersonal corporation; and we’d all prefer a Head of School to a CEO.

Policy of Trust Should Extend to the Internet

Recently, the administration has taken an active interest in websites like Myspace and Facebook.com. In a letter to parents, Dean of Students Marlys Edwards wrote that “teens are posting with increasing frequency to websites such as Myspace.com... [our] concern is that [posting on MySpace] may place your child in a precarious situation.”

The administration cannot be faulted for its concern about our health and safety. But we hope that, as administrators look out for our well-being, they continue to keep in mind the many legitimate uses of these websites and the Academy’s foundational principle of trust between students and administrators.

Obviously, students are wise to avoid posting anything they wouldn’t want their parents or teachers to see. But the reality is that students will often post whatever strikes them as funny or interesting, with the expectation that they will not need to worry about faculty or administrators monitoring their social A Pious Proposal activities.
