BALOISE SESSION 2016 – 24 musical highlights in an intimate, candlelight club atmosphere

From 21 October to 8 November it's time again for the 31st BALOISE SESSION. In a series of 12 concerts 24 world-famous acts and exciting newcomers will be appearing on stage in the unique intimate club-like setting with candlelight and small tables. The programme includes the finest soul-pop from Emeli Sandé, -rock from Jeff Beck, Latin-pop by Alvaro Soler, soul by Seven and country from Kenny Rogers.

The future of the popular music festival is assured: Baloise Insurance has ex- tended its partnership as Presenting Sponsor until 2020. A positive signal in a difficult year marked by a major loss: last July festival founder and President Matthias Müller died at the age of 51 after a serious illness. The BALOISE SESSION team will continue to organise the festival in accordance with his wishes.

Michael Müller, CEO of Baloise Insurance, commented «Matthias Müller's legacy has a great future, because it has a great provenance. We believe in this unique festival and in the people who have helped to make it so successful in the past and will con- tinue to do so in the future. For these reasons, we have extended our partnership as Presenting Sponsor until 2020.»

«In these sad times we are happy to have the support of our loyal Presenting Sponsor, and thank them for their confidence in us. Matthias Müller's vision and enthusiasm will remain an example to us all. With this in mind, we dedicate to Matthias the forthcoming BALOISE SESSION 2016, with spectacular acts like Emeli Sandé, John Newman and Norah Jones: acts which he was so thrilled to have engaged,» says Beatrice Stirnimann, BALOISE SESSION CEO and long-time business partner of Matthias Müller.

This year the «OPENING NIGHT» on 21 October is devoted to young artists and soul- ful songs. With hits like «Heaven», «Daddy» and «Clown», overnight sensation Emeli Sandé will be singing her way into the hearts of Basel's public. Keeping her company is the rising young songwriter from Bremen, Joris.

Two worlds, two generations, one motto: «LONG LIVE ROCK» on 22 October fea- tures a celebration of rock. Jeff Beck has been a leading guitarist on the British blues and rock scene since the 1960s. And Norwegian singer Sivert Høyem is known for his deep, melancholy voice.

On 23 October the BALOISE SESSION invites you to an evening of hot «LATIN RHYTHMS»: Spanish singer Alvaro Soler and guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela from guarantee to turn up the heat and bring some Latin fever to autumnal Basel.

The evening of 25 October «SOUL DIMENSIONS» sees two exciting personalities take to the stage: Seven, Switzerland's most famous soul singer, is celebrating his 15th year in the business. And British soul singer Laura Mvula stops off in Basel during her current tour to promote her second soul «».

On 26 October two avant-garde artists will be conquering Basel – with style and impressive live performances. Under the motto «BACK TO THE FUTURE» the reunited Culture Club, one of the most successful chart-toppers of the 1980s, will be entertaining the audience with old hits and new songs. Before that, Austrian DJ and producer Parov Stelar will fill the Event Hall with electro swing.

Two «CHART BREAKERS» and an evening to stir the emotions: both John Newman from Britain and Milow from Belgium already have Top 10 hits under their belts. Now the soul-pop singer and singer-songwriter share the BALOISE SESSION stage on 28 October.

«GOOD VIBRATIONS» are coming to Basel on 31 October: Brian Wilson and his Beach Boys composed dozens of classics such as «California Girls» – and with «Pet Sounds» he created one of the most influential in pop history, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. American surfer and singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter provides the perfect complement to the evening.

On 1 November Kaiser Chiefs from Britain and German-Swiss female duo Boy will be showcasing the diversity of «INDIE SOUNDS»: whether soft or loud, introverted or extroverted, what the bands share is their flair for great melodies.

Jazz is not just . In the concert entitled «JAZZ VARIETY» on 2 November two completely different interpreters of jazz take the stage: outstanding singer Stacey Kent, and one of the best-known modern jazz bassists, Marcus Miller. A musical treat for all jazz fans!

On 5 November the BALOISE SESSION takes to the «COUNTRY ROAD». On the festival's first country evening for five years, none other than Kenny Rogers will be honouring the city on the Rhine with his presence. Brandi Carlile, the wild woman of alternative country rock, will be opening the concert.

What could be better than enjoying the wonderful sound of singer and pianist Norah Jones while seated around the table in an intimate club setting? On 7 November the audience in Basel can enjoy this exclusive experience under the motto «DAYBREAKS». First up is the likeable Swiss singer Damian Lynn.

On 8 November the BALOISE SESSSION draws to a close with Silbermond, one of the most successful German-speaking pop groups, with their «LEICHTES GEPÄCK». The supporting act this evening is provided by new American discovery Max Jury.

OPENING NIGHT Exclusive in CH

EMELI SANDÉ / JORIS

Friday, 21 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

Alford and Vlotho are both little-known towns. The difference between these two pro- vincial backwaters is that one is in Scotland and the other is in North Rhine Westpha- lia. Both have one thing in common: they have produced two of the best songwriters on the English and German music scene.

One is a superstar, the other a newcomer. And they meet on the Opening Night of the BALOISE SESSION 2016 in the Event Hall of the Basel Fair: Emeli Sandé and Joris both deliver music that touches the soul, tugs at the heartstrings and draws you in, yet is so catchy you can't help singing along.

For example, rousing songs like «Next to Me» and «Heaven». Or quiet ballads like «Clown» and «River». With her soulful voice Emeli Sandé has sung her way into the hearts of millions of fans. That comes as no surprise, since this experienced and ver- satile musician, who was already a proficient pianist by the age of 11, has been in the background for years composing songs for established artists such as Leona Lewis, Tinie Tempah, Cheryl Cole, Alesha Dixon and Susan Boyle, helping them to achieve worldwide fame. Since 2011 she has been a star in her own right with her own repertoire, which festival-goers can discover – or indeed rediscover – in Basel.

The same goes for Joris. Despite a solid musical training, the pop academy graduate has not lost his instinct for spontaneous language. His melancholy, romantic music and slightly smoky voice conjure up a warm, intimate atmosphere without the slightest hint of kitsch. The simplicity of his songs makes them stick in the mind: «earworms» that instantly propelled his début album to Number 3 in the German charts.

In April, following a successful tour through Germany, he won three Echos (German music awards) including one in the Radio category. On 21 October, two artists with small-town origins will be stirring up the innermost emotions of the big-city audience. Welcome Emeli and Joris!

LONG LIVE ROCK Exclusive in CH

JEFF BECK / SIVERT HØYEM

Saturday, 22 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

With his blues influences and the tonal techniques of a Les Paul, Jeff Beck is regarded by many as the consummate British guitar hero. Norwegian Sivert Høyem has already given melancholy a new voice with «Madrugada». Two worlds, two generations, one motto: «Long Live Rock».

Jeff Beck once replaced none other than as guitarist for the legendary Yardbirds. Now, at the age of 74, he has taken a surprising new direction with his lat- est album «Loud Hailer». Produced in collaboration with post-punk singer Rosie Bones and her band mate Carmen Vandenberg, this «statement» album is a surprising mix of electronic beats and stirring protest songs. Given that it was the Jeff Beck Group that helped to kick-start the career of the then unknown , and that Beck's first instrumental hit was Paul Mauriat's schmaltzy French song «Love is Blue», this out- standing guitarist has never stopped surprising and acting as an inspiration to others. He recently toured the USA with , one of his major influences, but what has always made Jeff Beck stand out is his predilection for experimenting with sound, which goes far beyond the habitual boundaries of blues and rock. And it will be inter- esting to see who his backing artists will be and which songs he will be bringing to his first (!) appearance in Basel.

Sivert Høyem represents a completely different generation. He launched his stage ca- reer in the 1990s with Madrugada, whose album «Industrial Silence» served as a gloomy beacon for the new millennium. Since 2009, the man with the fascinating dark voice has been producing highly acclaimed solo recordings that remain true to the aura and moody intensity of his early career. Or is the current disc «Lioness» perhaps a little less melancholy, as he himself admits? Whatever the case, the audience will be enthralled with the gospel-like intensity of his performance in Basel.

LATIN RHYTHMS Exclusive in CH

ALVARO SOLER / RODRIGO Y GABRIELA

Sunday, 23 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

Alvaro Soler, the engaging young vocalist from Barcelona, injects a streetwise road- movie mood into his summer Latino sound, which also reflects his own background. Born in Barcelona to a Spanish mother and a German father, at the age of ten Alvaro moved with his family to Tokyo where he attended the German School and played in a student band.

At the age of 17 he returned to the Spanish metropolis to study industrial design for four years, until deciding to make a career of his favourite hobby: music. After making it to the final of the talent show «Tú sí que vales», he won a recording contract and shortly afterwards rocketed to the top of the Swiss and Italian charts with his single «El Mismo Sol».

For Rodrigo y Gabriela the road to success was a little rockier. What do you do when you don't instantly reach the Top Ten in the charts as a trash metal band yet want to try earning your living as a musician? The two Mexican guitarists Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero found their own solution to the problem: they moved from the American continent to and earned their daily bread as a pub band. Along the way they learned that softer sounds could attract a wider public, and adapted their musical style a little more closely to the market.

But the tweak was minor, because the sound produced by these two virtuoso instru- mentalists is alive with metal riffs skilfully blended with Latino and gypsy elements, and all on acoustic guitar: a veritable musical feast for the eyes as well as the ears. In 2002 they took the plunge and produced their first album «Re-Foc», which was followed two years later by «Live Manchester and ».

Their breakthrough came when singer-songwriter colleague took them along on tour as his supporting act. Top producer John Leckie – who works with su- perstars like Radiohead and Muse – produced their third album entitled «Rodrigo y Gabriela», which instantly shot to Number One on the Irish charts. A musical fairytale come true: one that could just as easily have been penned by Spanish-German pop romantic Alvaro Soler.

SOUL DIMENSIONS Exclusive combination

SEVEN / LAURA MVULA

Tuesday, 25 October, 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

He is the dominant voice of Swiss soul, and not just since his appearance on the reali- ty show «Sing meinen Song – Das Tauschkonzert». Seven has released ten studio albums, almost all of which have made it into the charts. The last album, «Back Love Soul», even topped the Swiss hit parade in 2015. Seven has also released three live albums over the years: proof of his outstanding qualities as a live performer. The secret of his success? Alongside his crystal-clear, passionate voice, it's his versatility. Rather than delivering pure soul, the 37-year-old's music is blended with elements from funk and R'n'B. Nor is this vocalist afraid to experiment with acoustic pop.

With an impressive body of work already under his belt, Seven recently released a «Best-of» CD featuring hits from his long career to date. The album contains 19 songs from 2002 to 2016, including his major singles from «Synthetic Soul» to «Walking With You».

Laura Mvula from has also devoted her career to soul. In June the British singer with Caribbean roots released her second album, «The Dreaming Room», which landed in the UK Top 30.

The classically-trained singer combines the raw power of Amy Winehouse with the ethereal qualities of a , backed by modern electronic sounds. She bridges the gap between black dance music and lush dreampop, audibly mixing her roots in St. Kitts and Jamaica with a flair for British pop. Strings and electrobeats meet piano, and driving bass lines underpin melancholy melodies. In the end, the effortless beauty of her music is reminiscent of great singers whom one would not necessarily associate with soul: moments that recall Brian Wilson's psychedelic approach to music, and at times a fragile eccentricity reminiscent of Björk or Annie Lennox.

As with Seven, soul has no boundaries for Laura Mvula!

BACK TO THE FUTURE Exclusive in CH

CULTURE CLUB / PAROV STELAR

Wednesday, 26 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

The 1980s: what a flamboyant era of stand-out pop music! Back then the music busi- ness was a colourful circus, populated by eccentric, extrovert characters both on and off the stage.

In those days manager and producer Malcolm McLaren, who had already propelled the Sex Pistols to worldwide fame, was managing a band called Bow Wow Wow. And it was here that he met a character who was at least as outrageous as himself: a recipe for conflict. McLaren threw him out, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise; be- cause from then on Boy George embarked on his own career: a career almost without parallel in terms of highs and lows.

But again and again it was his band, Culture Club, which picked him up, dusted him off and got him back on track. Since its foundation in 1981 Culture Club has been dis- banded and re-formed twice. In all that time the band never lost its talent for catchy, swinging pop-soul with hints of reggae, interpreted of course by the soft, soulful voice of front man Boy George, which helped them make pop history with the huge hit «Do You Really Want To Hurt Me».

No less eccentric and with just as much flair for dance, 20 years later the Austrian DJ and producer Parov Stelar has become a cult figure. Compared to Boy George, his look is relatively conservative: horn-rimmed glasses, sports jacket and bow tie. His music is a fitting accompaniment to ironic nostalgia: a sophisticated mix of sampled retro sounds and fresh, up-to-date dance floor beats. Swing, disco and jazz blend with hip-hop and electro to create a new style: electro swing.

The erstwhile graphic artist caused a stir in 2014 with his first EP «KissKiss». Since then this prolific sound-master has produced no less than 12 more albums, and has won the prestigious Amadeus award in his home country an astounding seven times.

Culture Club and Parov Stelar: two avant-garde artists will be conquering Basel on 26 October, not only with their style but also, and above all, with impressive live perfor- mances.

CHART BREAKERS Exclusive combination

JOHN NEWMAN / MILOW

Friday, 28 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

Two chart breakers in one evening: John Newman was 21 years old when he first hit the charts with his band Rudimental. His first single as a solo artist, «Love Me Again», also immediately climbed to the top of the British charts. And his début album «Tribute» won accolades in many countries across .

So it's no surprise that the multi-instrumentalist and producer was dubbed by some as the male equivalent of Adele. That was back in 2013. But not being one to rest on his laurels, the British-born singer further developed the retro soul sound of his début al- bum. Guitars in the Motown style, strings, opulence and emotions also dominated his second album, «Revolve», but at the same time Newman ventured into new territory, experimenting with house and disco music.

What will his third album be like? The first single in his upcoming album leans more towards dance. «Olé» sounds like a mixture of easy-going pop in the style of Jack Johnson, and soul with a Caribbean flair. The release is eagerly awaited.

Milow also breathed the heady air of the hit parade years ago. From 2007 onwards, the Belgian singer had his biggest hits with «You Don't Know» and «Ayo Technology»: pensive ballads accompanied by acoustic guitars. From then on it was these quiet moments that became his signature and earned him so many fans. His sixth and latest album, «Modern Heart», is just as impressive. Spontaneous emotions, a large dose of melancholy and a touch of quiet contemplation are the cornerstones of his mature work.

Like John Newman, Milow has also entered new territory. «I wanted to expand my musical horizons and find new ways of expressing myself», he said in a recent inter- view. «I wanted to find a way of bringing alternative R'n'B and hip-hop, like Frank Ocean and The Weekend, into my world of acoustic guitars to generate more colour. That was really liberating».

BRIAN WILSON CELEBRATES PET SOUNDS / DONAVON FRANKENREITER

Monday, 31 October 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

It's exactly 50 years since Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys produced their ground- breaking album «Pet Sounds». Now the creative lead of the legendary Californian band celebrates this anniversary, and brings along another younger-generation surf- songwriter: Donavon Frankenreiter.

In the USA only ever had one serious rival: Brian Wilson, who crafted in- creasingly extravagant cathedrals of sound from simple surf rock. With «Pet Sounds», he delivered a fabulous concept album that attempted to outdo Lennon and McCartney's «Revolver» and «Sgt. Pepper». And it was this intense rivalry that drove the dynamic that changed pop music for good. To this day, songs like «Good Vibra- tions» are regarded as the absolute highlights of the Swinging Sixties.

But Wilson's creativity took its toll, as he increasingly withdrew from the band and fell under the influence of a self-proclaimed therapist. And it was only in the 1990s that he found his way back to a solo career. Now, Brian Wilson comes to Basel with a verita- ble «50th anniversary celebration» that promises a comprehensive performance of «Pet Sounds», supported by his old Beach Boys colleagues Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, intermingled with less well-known songs and «Greatest Hits». Fans who ex- perienced the Beach Boys without Brian in Basel in 2003 now have the exciting oppor- tunity to compare the two performances!

On the same evening, singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter brings to Basel the Californian sound of today. Born in 1972, he is also a «beach boy» but perhaps repre- sents a less enthusiastic, more introspective era. Frankenreiter originally wrote lyrics in the same vein as his old friend Jack Johnson, but has since expanded his repertoire to incorporate the guitar techniques and instruments of his adopted home, Hawaii – in- cluding the ukulele, which has seen resurgence in popularity. And who knows? Per- haps the cool beach-party mood will be completed with a few selected covers from Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones.

INDIE SOUNDS Exclusive combination

KAISER CHIEFS / BOY

Tuesday, 1 November 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

British band Kaiser Chiefs and the duo Boy, two female vocalists from Hamburg and Zurich, will be showcasing the indie rock in all its many guises. Whether loud or soft, introverted or extroverted, this promises to be an evening of contrasts and crossovers: both bands share a flair for the great pop song.

Ten years ago the Kaiser Chiefs were part of a new indie rock that hit the scene, influ- enced by the edgy new wave of the1980s. This quintet from was among the first to embrace the new genre along with the likes of Franz Ferdinand. And while many similarly-styled groups primarily projected a raw energy and a compact playing tech- nique, the Kaiser Chiefs were all about melody. Witness their 2007 hit «Ruby» or songs like «Everything Is Average Nowadays» with their timeless refrains. This is why these fantastic indie rock favourites have stood the test of time. And one can only look forward with bated breath to their new, sixth album, «Stay Together», which will be released a few weeks before their appearance in Basel.

Altogether softer and more subtle are the more indie sounds of Boy. While they, too, have devoted themselves to catchy melodies, their style is much more restrained. With their alternative, softer form of rock the duo, consisting of Valeska Steiner from Zurich and Sonja Glass from Hamburg, became an overnight success with their 2011 début album «Mutual Friends». Released by Herbert Grönemeyer's hip label Grönland, the album went gold in Germany. And the follow-up, «We Were Here», won praise for its calm yet compelling atmosphere. Last year the album climbed to Number 3 on the Swiss and German charts.

JAZZ VARIETY Exclusive combination

MARCUS MILLER – AFRODEEZIA TOUR / STACEY KENT

Wednesday, 2 November 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

Jazz can be many things: sultry southern-States blues or light musical-style songs, breakneck hard bop or swinging big band music, fusion dance sounds or explosive free jazz. But no matter what type of jazz it is, two things are essential: improvisation and a distinctive identity. Bass-player and all-rounder Marcus Miller and Stacey Kent, the «girl next door» with the warm girlish voice, share these qualities. Both live their music to the hilt, become one with it, and are immediately identifiable after just a few bars!

Marcus Miller's masterpieces were the albums he produced with and for . But before that, Miller supported virtually all the greats in the studio: his bass can be heard on around 500 recordings, including those by Roberta Flack and Aretha Franklin, David Sanborn and Al Jarreau. So busy was he as a studio musician that he almost forgot what it was like playing live. When Miles Davis died in 1991, Marcus Miller decided to return to the stage and do his own thing. He became a «world traveller», in the words of music magazine «Down Beat». On his current pro- duction «Afrodeezia», he and his musicians from four continents trace the roots of slavery, because Marcus Miller is also a political artist.

Not so Stacey Kent, whose songs combine a wide range of musical styles from all over the world – jazz and chansons, Brazilian and Broadway standards – demonstrat- ing that music is a universal language that brings people together in the best possible sense of the word. Stacey herself is multilingual: born in New York, the literature grad- uate now lives in England, speaks French and Portuguese fluently, and sings her songs around the world. And always at her side is her producer, arranger, saxophonist and husband Jim Tomlinson, who lays down a musical red carpet for his partner and presents her in the best light.

Marcus Miller and Stacey Kent invite us into the wonderful world of jazz – in all its dazzling variety!

COUNTRY ROAD Exclusive in CH

KENNY ROGERS – FINAL WORLD TOUR / BRANDI CARLILE

Saturday, 5 November 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

Last year, following a career spanning more than 50 years, 22 chart-topping hits and more than 125 million records sold, Kenny Roger achieved something very special. In response to the key question of whether «Texas Hold'em» is a game of chance or skill, Canadian federal Judge Sean Harrington quoted passages from Rogers' huge hit «The Gambler», and ruled that it was a game of skill. Only country music could write a story like that. It shows that behind the often homey, sentimental façade of country music lies a great deal of wisdom, and often, too, a generous pinch of social criticism and self-irony.

These are the best ingredients for an exciting evening of entertainment in Basel, when two exponents of this genre who could not be more different meet on stage. Kenny Rogers and Brandi Carlile: one a living legend born in Houston, Texas, in 1938, who began his career playing contrabass in a jazz band before turning to country in the mid-1970s. As his special guest, he will be bringing along Linda Davis.

The other is a rebellious self-made woman, born in Ravensdale, Washington, in 1981, whose reputation as a Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter has spread far her home country. After growing up with country music in her home town, she migrated to the rock scene in Seattle and formed a band with the twins Tim and Phil Hanseroth. She recorded and distributed her first record on her own, and in 2004 was signed up by Columbia Records. Her breakthrough came when her all-time hit «The Story» was chosen as the title song for the US TV series «Grey's Anatomy», and entered the in- ternational charts.

While this is still a far cry from the successes enjoyed by Kenny Rogers, Brandi Carlile continues to blaze her own trail. If the BALOISE SESSION did not enjoy such a pres- tigious reputation, the two country stars would perhaps never have shared a concert. But in Basel it is possible to experience the polarity of American culture live, even with- in the same musical genre. Three days before the presidential elections in the USA, this concert may provide Europeans with food for thought and encourage them to pay more attention in future to US politics.

DAYBREAKS Exclusive in CH

NORAH JONES / DAMIAN LYNN

Monday, 7 November 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

When Norah Jones took to the world stage in 2002 with «Come Away With Me», little did she guess that she would trigger a paradigm shift in pop music with her «moody little disc». As a pianist her influence is jazz, but as a singer-songwriter she sits firmly in the country tradition of Hank Williams and Willie Nelson. Singing solo accompanied by guitar and loop instrument, Damian Lynn is not so far from this tradition.

Only the wonderful version of «Cold Cold Heart» on Norah Jones' first album betrayed the country roots of this highly-gifted musician. While a New-Yorker by birth, she grew up in Texas and was influenced by country and gospel before turning to jazz. Now, with 45 million records and no less than nine Grammy awards under her belt, Norah's remarkable latest album «Day Breaks» marks her return to jazz.

Once more she proves to be one of America's most important contemporary voices, with a distinctive sound that reflects all the great genres of American roots music: country, folk, rock, soul and jazz, featuring great guest musicians the likes of Wayne Shorter and Lonnie Liston Smith, as well as unexpected cover songs by Horace Silver, Duke Ellington – and Neil Young. So it's no surprise that Norah Jones is still under contract to the legendary Blue Note jazz label!

Solid songcraft is also the trademark of young Damian Lynn from Lucerne. He first appeared on the stage with Patent Ochsner and the rapper Bligg. Unlike them, how- ever, he tells his stories in English yet still manages to deliver a highly personal and at times ironic outlook on the world. Live on stage, Damian sounds like a real band thanks to his loop instrument, with guitar sounds and his own voice combining in a call-and-response style to create a finely-woven texture. Last year Lynn's first album, «Count To Ten», rose to Number 12 in the hit parade: which only goes to show that in the world of pop there's always room for such a deep-thinking individualist.

LEICHTES GEPÄCK Exclusive combination

SILBERMOND / MAX JURY

Tuesday, 8 November 2016, 8 pm, Event Hall, Basel Fair

The name is synonymous with stand-out riffs, catchy German refrains and lush, broad sounds that are perfectly suited to large venues. So it's surprising that Silbermond, currently the most successful pop-rock band in the German-speaking world, recorded their last album in Nashville: the capital of country music. It was there that the quartet from Saxony gave their songs a new twist. Not that their massive wall of sound could ever have given way to a dry, acoustic form of country music, but «Leichtes Gepäck» is clearly a case of «less is more». The album features lightly-plucked guitars, here and there a piano and accentuated string sections. Yet what remains are the insightful lyrics about everyday stress, inner turmoil, consumerism and the group's home city, Berlin. And naturally Silbermond's fifth studio album contains the great refrains so typi- cal of the band.

Following a sell-out concert by the quartet from Saxony at the Hallenstadion in Zurich in spring, the BALOISE SESSION now offers the rare opportunity to hear front vocalist Stefanie Kloss – also known as a member of the «Voice of Germany» jury – and her band in a more intimate setting. Silbermond will be performing not only songs from their current album «Leichtes Gepäck» («Travelling Light»), but also hits such as «Das Beste», «Irgendwas bleibt» and «Himmel auf».

Supporting Silbermond is American singer Max Jury, who released his début album in June to critical acclaim. The songs by the man from Iowa are in the same vein as those of Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Gram Parsons and Paul Simon. He mixes Amer- icana, folk and soul to create a unique style accompanied by the piano: «epic and im- pressive», was how the British «Guardian» newspaper described it. He, too, is «travel- ling light» to Basel in order to share the big stage with Silbermond.
