Why Doesn't Anybody Write Anything About Glam Rock?
WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT GLAM ROCK? Jon Stratton In discussions of post-war British youth cultures glam rock gets very little attention. For example, in their seminal work on British youth cultural forms, Hall et al (1976:54), make only one passing reference to this subculture. In a list of subcultural possessions and objects they refer to: '... the glitter costumes of the Bowrieites ... .' Similarly, Brake (l980:80) in his outlines of British post-war youth cultures gives the culture half a page while skinheads get two pages and rockers one page. Hebdige, (1979) in Subculture: the meaning of style, does spend about two and a half pages looking at glam rock but most of this space is taken up with an analysis of the images of David Bowie. Hebdige writes of Bowie that: Certainly Bowie's position was devoid of any obvious political or counter-cultural significance ... (l979:6l). And Bowie's meta-message was escape — from class, from sex, from obvious commitment — into a fantasy past ... or a science-fiction future (1979:61). What is confusing for Hebdige about glam rock soon becomes clear: In glam-rock, at least amongst those artists placed, like Bowie and Roxy Music, at the more sophisticated end of the glitter spectrum, the subversive emphasis was shifted away from class and youth onto sexuality and gender-typing (1979:61-2). On the one hand, Hebdige can write so much about Bowie because glam rock's presentation of image as image lends itself to Hebdige's dominant semiotic method of analyzing cultural texts.

May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by ﬂoating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving oﬀ error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.

Although Ravel’s highly recognizable pattern is commonly quoted in many genres of popular music, the Bolero rhythm takes on added significance in the realm of hard rock: it acts as a symbolic musical topic that represents military fanfare. In this paper, I provide a brief history of the Bolero rhythm topic as it appears in rock recordings, and I explore the features that characterize this topic—triplet patterns, a featured snare drum, and a unison “riff”—as it is frequently heard in a rock context. INTRODUCTION In the genre of early 1970’s music that we now call hard rock, three bands fought for supremacy: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. Although Deep Purple’s legacy has softened over time, their star burned brightly in 1970; the group that had offered the pretentious Concerto for Group and Orchestra just a year earlier met the new decade with a more focused, no-nonsense approach, as heard in their album Deep Purple In Rock.

Cartea este dedicatå celor care doresc så-çi facå o idee despre muzica çi activitatea celor mai cunoscuÆi artiçti, mai noi çi mai vechi, de la începutul secolului çi pânå în zilele noastre. Totodatå am inclus çi un capitol de termeni muzicali la care cititorul poate apela pentru a înÆelege anumite cuvinte sau expresii care nu îi sunt familiare. Fårå a se dori o lucrare foarte complexå, aceastå micå enciclopedie oferå date esenÆiale din biografia celor mai cunoscuÆi artiçti çi trupe, låsând loc lucrårilor specializate pe un anumit gen sau stil muzical så dezvolte çi så aprofundeze ceea ce am încercat så conturez în câteva rânduri. Discografia fiecårui artist sau trupå cuprinde albumele apårute de la începutul activitåÆii çi pânå în prezent, sau, de la caz la caz, pânå la data desfiinÆårii trupei sau abandonårii carierei. Am numit disc de platinå sau aur acele albume care s-au vândut într-un anumit numår de exemplare (diferit de la Æarå la Æarå, vezi capitolul TERMENI MUZICALI) care le-au adus acest statut. Totodatå, am inclus çi o serie de LP-uri BEST OF sau GREATEST HITS apårute la casele de discuri din întreaga lume. De aceea veÆi observa cå discografia unui artist sau a unei trupe cuprinde mai multe albume decât au apårut în timpul vieÆii sau activitåÆii acestora (vezi Jimi Hendrix, de exemplu) çi asta pentru cå industria muzicalå çi magnaÆii acesteia çi-au protejat contractele çi investiÆiile iniÆiale cât mai mult posibil, profitând la maximum de numele artiçtilor çi trupelor lor.
