The fall semester was a great success, and we are delighted to welcome the newest members to the tribe! I am so thankful to those who have supported and guided me along the way. 2015-2016 OFFICERS A special thank you to the COE members and my fellow officers this past semester, Phillip Zhen and Jake. Iron Arrow Honor Society

A Legacy of Giving: What giving back your Jacket means…

In January 2011, Dr. John Post found himself pondering a momentous decision-as he wrote in a letter to the tribe “I was tapped into Iron Arrow in 1980 and really appreciate the honor. But I live in Virginia, never get to FL and bet you could use this jacket more than I.” Dr. Post’s generous impulse resulted in one of the Spring 2011 tappees, Dr. Sam Rosenblatt, receiving a jacket that not only embodied the spirit of the Tribe but that came with special meaning as having belonged to a member who had come before him. The photo on the right shows Sam-a surprised and deeply honored tape — with Chief Jodie Barkin on tapping day at the Medical campus.

Dr. Shirley Merlin West, tapped into the tribe in 1990, was a quintessential ‘Cane: a Miami native, lifelong leader in her field of education and always a passionate supporter of the University of Miami. Upon her death in the Spring of 2011, Dr. West’s family reached out to offer her jacket, to be passed along to a deserving individual through the Iron Arrow Legacy Jacket program. Happily, that Fall, Nicole Garcia was tapped into the tribe and it was clear that Dr. West’s jacket should be passed onto her. Like Shirley, Nicole is a Miami native and an outstanding School of Education student leader. Nicole is president this year of Omicron Delta Kappa, a student honor society to which Dr. West also belonged. So as the drums beat at Homecoming to welcome our newest tribe members, Nicole proudly received the jacket so generously bequeathed by Dr. Shirley Merlin West and her family.

The tribe also received another legacy jacket in the Fall of 2011, this from Dr. Harry Schultz who was a longtime faculty member and Chair of the Department of Chemistry. Writing from his retirement home in Wyoming, Dr. Schultz indicated his desire that an outstanding student in a Science or Technology major use the jacket. His jacket, with its intricate patchwork, awaited a deserving young person who soon came to know the Arrow.

We were also graced with a box of treasures (pictured below) donated by the wife of the late Ed Harrison (IA ’58), Ms. Patricia Harrison (of All American Engraving) - pictured to the right.

In December 2015, COE member Michelle Williams rescued the jacket of former Dean of the Graduate School, J. Riis Owre (IA ’54) from eBay. It was a beautiful 3-row black jacket.

During the first days of 2016, we also received the gift of the jacket of retired Circuit Court Judge Thomas “Tam” Wilson (IA ’71) from the executor of his estate, pictured below. Judge Wilson passed away in August 2015, but his legacy and memory will live on with the next member who inherits his gorgeous light blue jacket.

As the keeper of the University of Miami traditions and history, these generous gifts of precious materials have become a much appreciated treasure from those in the tribe who bequeath and donate jackets, books, documents and other tribal memorabilia. They truly are illustrations of being part of the highest honor attained at the University of Miami

Any and all donations are treasured, carefully curated and joyfully shared with our membership. If you are interested in passing along treasures we would love to hear from you! Please contact us at [email protected].
