Spring 2013 NEWSLETTER Iron Arrow Honor Society the HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED at the UNIVERSITY of MIAMI Spring 2013 NEWSLETTER Iron Arrow Honor Society THE HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI A Message from the Chief Greetings Tribe Members! The officers and I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year! We hope that 2013 is filled with adventures, success and happiness for you all. I would like to start off our next semester together with a quote from Walt Disney, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” I hope that we will all be curious in 2013, and that this curiosity leads us each down a path of opportunity. For those that were unable to attend the fall semester events, this newsletter provides a great 2012-2013 OFFICERS summary of them all, including a list of the new initiates and their accomplishments. This semester we created a welcoming environment for freshmen at Orientation, made ourselves more visible as a Tribe on campus, and initiated a wonderful tap class that had a plethora of knowledge to share. ASHLEY TAGGART In October, our Tapping Luncheon speaker, Katie Meier, brought us to tears of joy as she inspired Chief us with her view on Iron Arrow and her focus as a coach. Our “History and Traditions Pow Wow” 305.775.1278 with past and present student leaders opened the doors for discussion about the evolution of [email protected] undergraduate organizations and events at the University of Miami. In November, we enjoyed each other’s company at a UM vs. Virginia Watch Party and at a fun-filled Family Day in the Everglades, MELISSA GULLER but more importantly we came together as a Tribe in support of JC Ridley at UM’s “Out of Son of Chief Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention”. We plan to continue participating as a Tribe in other 314.477.6143 University of Miami community service events, so please check your emails and the Iron Arrow [email protected] website for any changes to the calendar. Adam Bofill I would like to thank all of the Tribe Members who were able to participate this past semester, Medicine Man whether in the flesh or from a remote location. You all keep this Tribe alive. As mentioned 786.218.2977 previously, we have been working diligently to launch a secure, online Iron Arrow database that a.bofi[email protected] only members can access through Alumni Channel. Thanks to Johann Ali’s dedication to this project, the database will be fully operational next month. Look out for an email from me on how to set up your account so that you can stay connected with other Tribe members throughout the COUNCIL OF ELDERS world. Furthermore, I would like to thank Raul Alvarez, Jose Armario, and Dean Meyers for their donation to the Tribe, which will be JOHANN A. ALI combined with other tribe members’ DAVID L. BROWN donations and used for casting a new MYLES A. COCHRAN fire bowl for The Mound. Last, but not DAVID McDONALD, Sr. least, I would like to congratulate our ELIZABETH M. RODRIGUEZ new Medicine Man, Adam Bofill. MICHELLE A. WILLIAMS The Officers and I look forward to C. RHEA WARREN seeing many of you at Tribal activities during the spring semester. As always, we welcome your advice and FACULTY ADVISOR suggestions on previous and future ANN M. HELMERS events. Thank you for your support and dedication to the Tribe. In August Fall orientation began with our entering Class of 2016 learning the alma mater from those who know this song by heart—Iron Arrow! The students used a special song sheet which was part of a complete history of the University of Miami in poster form, which now adorns many dorm walls and which reflects our role as keepers of the history and traditions. The poster was distributed throughout the fall at tribal programs and will also be available for tribe members at Spring activities.
