Spring 2019 Newsletter A Message from the Chief Greetings Tribe Members! On behalf of the Officers, welcome to another semester at the University of Miami! This year, we have embarked on a coordinated effort to reengage and reinvigorate Iron Arrow’s relationship with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. In addition to attending American Indian Day Photo by J.C. Ridley (IA’02) on the Reservation in September as a symbolic gesture, we have also formalized this effort. In partnership with the Tribe, and with support from University administration, Iron Arrow signed a Memorandum of Understanding between all three parties, reinforcing our partnership for the 2018-2019 OFFICERS Miccosukee Tribe. Adrian Z. Nuñez Son of Chief This semester we have continued these efforts by hosting the Miccosukee Day on Campus, 786.863-0258 offering prospective Miccosukee students and their families the opportunity to tour campus, [email protected] enjoy campus dining, and attend a University of Miami Men’s Basketball game. After many years of not actively maintaining our Tribal connections, the Officers, led by Chief Owen Berry (Chief, 2017-2018) and built upon by current Chief Adrian Nuñez, officially and actively engaged the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, by first connecting through then-UM student Miccosukee Tribal member Curtis Osceola. Curtis then connected the Officers and the Council of Elders to Miccosukee Tribal Council Secretary, Talbert Cypress. This effort was intended to further deepen the relationship kindled by Council of Elders Members Johann A. Ali and Michelle A. Williams over the last 15 years with Miccosukee Tribal Council Vice Chairman Roy Cypress and former Miccosukee Tribal Medicine Man Joe Cypress. As a result of these efforts, on November 2, 2018, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, represented by Secretary Talbert Cypress, the University of Miami, represented by President Julio Frenk, and Iron Arrow Honor Society, represented by Chief Adiran Nuñez, signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the three entities. The MOU provided the foundation and outline for the future of the relationship between the Miccosukee, Iron Arrow and the University of Miami. It established the mutual understanding and respect between us, and reaffirmed the Miccossukee’s unequivocal endorsement and support for Iron Arrow, it’s rituals and traditions as gifted to it by the Miccosukee’s elders and ancestors in 1926, and the cooperation between the University and the Tribes into the future for mutual benefit and cultural exchange. In keeping with the on-going commitment we made in the Fall of 2017, after the initial internal discussion about cultural appropriation with Miccosukee Tribal Council Vice Chairman Roy Cypress on February 11, 2018, we co-hosted a “Difficult Dialogues” panel discussion with the Department of Multicultural Affairs on November 8, 2018, headed by Iron Arrow member Dr. Renée Dickens Callan with the specific purpose of publicly addressing cultural appropriation concerns, not only as they pertained to Iron Arrow, but in general across Native American cultures within the broader community. The panel was comprised of two Native American UM students Allison Cawthorn and Camila Rodriguez-Rojas, and Miccosukee Tribal Members Curtis Osceola and Houston Cypress. The panel discussion was facilitated by Iron Arrow member, UM Alumnus, and lecturer in the School of Communication, Winston Warrior. The event garnered a great turnout and filled the Activities Rooms of the Shalala Student Center, and resulted in some excellent discussion, dialogue and follow-ups from the attendees and the panelists.
