Iron Arrow Honor Society Sponsor (n) \ˈspän(t)-sər\ : one who assumes responsibility for some other person or thing MERRIAM WEBSTER DICTIONARY

The role of the sponsor within Iron Arrow serves as an incredible opportunity for you as a member of the tribe to give back to the campus community by nominating a student, faculty member, staff member or alumnus who exemplify the five qualities of Iron Arrow. With this Fall's nomination deadline approaching quickly (Submission by email on Monday, October 16th, 2017 by 5:00 PM) we wanted to take the opportunity to break down the role of the sponsor throughout the entire selections, tapping and initiation process. As noted above, as a sponsor, you are assuming responsibility for the individual you are nominating. What does that mean exactly? Glad you asked. As officers, the most helpful act a tribe member can do to ensure that we continue to grow and better the tribe each and every year, is to be a dedicated sponsor for their nominee. We believe that it is integral to the prosperity of the tribe that each and every nominee, tappee and initiate has the greatest and most informative tapping week necessary, but we need your help to do that.

Selections, where it all starts:

When deciding if you are going to nominate an individual, a member usually goes through a mental checklist of the person, ensuring that they believe that the 'Cane is worthy of the highest honor one can attain at the U. When running through this list, each and every potential sponsor is different, but what remains constant among us all should be a formal review of the Responsibilities of the Nominator/Sponsor attached to the nomination form. Can you attend the pre-selections meeting scheduled on Tuesday, October 17th at 8pm? Can you attend selections on Sunday, October 22nd, 2017? Can you attend the MANDATORY sponsor and initiation volunteer meeting on Tuesday, October 24th at 7pm? Can you attend tapping day? Are you willing to provide information to your tappee about the tribe and meet with them throughout the initiation week to ensure that they are learning the core principles and values of the tribe? Can you attend initiation on Friday, November 10th?

Tapping Day, November 2nd, we're halfway there: The wait is finally over. Today is the day that we’ve all been waiting for since last Spring when we welcomed our newest members into the tribe. Tapping day is by far one of the most memorable experiences for any member in Iron Arrow. To many, what makes it so special is the surprise shock of the grabbers arms around theirs, the exhilarating feeling as you walk arm in arm through our beautiful campus and that moment of pure silence before the Chief says “Congratulations!” The role of the sponsor is incredibly important on this day. Tappees begin a lifelong journey that they didn’t anticipate, and it is you who is at the wheel, guiding them through the next week. Some key things to keep in mind as a sponsor on tapping day are: 1. Schedule your tappee’s tapping with the Son of Chief as early as possible. If you can’t make it to tapping day, be sure to appoint someone to take your place. 2. Come early, help set up, talk with members of the tribe and stay for as long as you can. Members who participate in tappings other than their own help to facilitate a memorable tapping for the rest of the new tappees. 3. Participate in the hymns and chants of our tribe and begin to educate the new tappees on the history and symbolism of Iron Arrow.

I-Week and Initiation, an educational journey through the history of Iron Arrow: Every part of our Iron Arrow traditions is incredibly important, but many would say that the week(s) leading up to initiation top the charts. When your tappee has had the chance to settle in and the excitement of Tapping Day is behind them, it is now that your role as a sponsor grows immensely. Iron Arrow and the University of Miami have such rich histories that it is important to educate your tappee on as much as you can. We encourage you to pass along any packets, guides or words of advice that you received during your initiation week, as well as reach out to the Son of Chief for any help on guiding your tappee down the path to initiation. If you can’t answer a question that your tappee may have, just reach out and a member of Iron Arrow will be there for you. As we enter the weekend of Initiation, keep in mind that this year it is on Friday, November 10th. If you can’t make it to Initiation, be sure to appoint someone on your behalf to guide your tappee through the night. We require all sponsors to volunteer or appoint someone to volunteer during initiation as there are many moving parts throughout the night to ensure its’ success and the more help we have, the more successful the initiation for your tappee. We encourage everyone to sponsor a member of the ’Cane community throughout this next academic year. The role of a sponsor is an incredibly rewarding experience that we hope every member has the opportunity to go through. If its your first time sponsoring someone or you have any questions, always feel free to reach out to any officer, we are here to help you succeed.

Iron Arrow Honor Society Fall 2017 Luncheon Speaker: Deon LeCointe Deon LeCointe is the Senior Manager for Sports and IP Technology Solutions in the Solutions of North America division at Sony Electronics. In this role, Deon oversees sales, marketing, and technology development for the audio and video acquisition products used by sports production professionals in North America.

Deon was born on the island of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. He is the last of 4 children to parents who emigrated from the island of Nevis in the West Indies. Even though he grew up in paradise, Deon longed for a life on the mainland. He has fond memories of watching the ball drop in Times Square on New Years Eve and dreamed of someday being able to enjoy a life in New York City. Growing up, he always had a knack for electronics. This interest likely developed because Deon also had a knack for breaking electronics. Over time, he turned his destructive interests into a real skill, and eventually into a hobby fixing VCRs, televisions, and computers for neighbors and friends.

After graduating high school in 2002, Deon was accepted to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Following his passion for electronics, he pursued a degree Electrical Engineering with the hopes that he would someday design and build the next-generation of electronic devices and technology. During his time at the University, Deon became heavily involved in a number of student organizations and initiatives. These included the National Society of Black Engineers, the Caribbean Students Association, the Council of International Student Organizations, the Virgin Islands Student Association, the Homecoming Committee, the Brothers Overcoming Negativity and Destruction, and the Committee on Student Organizations. He was tapped into Iron Arrow, “the highest honor attained at the University of Miami” in the spring of 2005, and later served as Medicine Man and then Chief of the organization. That same semester, hoping to get an edge on a very competitive marketplace, Deon was accepted into the highly selective 5-year Dual Degree program at the College of Engineering. In 2007, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Deon joined Sony in 2007 and was accepted into the first ever Associate Sales Support Engineer Rotational Training program. In this program, he traveled the country for 2 years learning the technologies and techniques used by film and broadcast television professionals. With this training as a foundation, Deon was catapulted into an industry he didn't even know existed. Before his current role, he has worked in a number of roles related to post-production workflow technologies, video codecs and compression, IP Video transmission, 4K live production, and content management systems for broadcast and news.

Deon currently resides in New York City, but can often be found traveling to sporting events around the US and Canada in an effort to keep his finger on the pulse of the next trends in sports video production technology.
