“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success. -

Following its sensational arrival, the politics of popular musical culture has however moved from the shared experience of protest movements and picket lines and to an individualised and celebrified consumerist experience. As a consequence what emerged, as a controversial and subversive phenomenon, has been de-fanged and transformed into a mechanism of establishment support. -

New Neil Young Album: "Chrome Dreams II"
2007-09-25 18:06 CEST New Neil Young album: "Chrome Dreams II" The new album by Neil Young, "Chrome Dreams II", will be released by Reprise Records on October 17th. Speaking from a vacation retreat with his family, Young says it’s “an album with a form based on some of my original recordings, with a large variety of songs, rather than one specific type of song.” It comes at a creative peak for the artist, following the Greendale, Prairie Wind, and Living With War albums, and a summer 2006 tour by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young that concert audiences are still talking about. In many ways, Chrome Dreams II is the ultimate example of what Young does best: most of the songs were written recently and came quickly, and the “live” recording sessions in northern California were over before they were announced. The album includes all kinds of music, and taken together, offers a complete picture of where Neil Young is today. “Where Living With War and Everybody’s Rockin’ were albums focused on one subject or style,” Young says, “Chrome Dreams II is more like After The Goldrush or Freedom, with different types of songs working together to form a feeling. Now that radio formats are not as influential as they once were, it’s easier to release an album that crosses all formats with a message that runs through the whole thing, regardless of the type of song or sound.” On the sessions for the album, Neil Young was joined by Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, pedal steel guitarist and dobro player Ben Keith (Harvest, Comes A Time, Harvest Moon) and bassist Rick Rosas (Freedom, Living With War, This Note’s For You). -

A Month of Free Folk & Ethnic Performances in Your Washington State Parks Beginning August 4, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission presents a series of programs of folk and ethnic music, dance, and storytelling at state park sites around the state. All the events, except those August 11 and 18 at the Silver Lake Mt. St. Helens Visitor Center and the August 18 Flute Quest, are free, but all parked vehicles in the parks must display the annual Discover Pass ( www.discoverpass.wa.gov ), purchase a $10 Day Use Pass upon entering the park, or display a valid camping pass. Saturday, August 4, ShellFest 2012 , at Potlatch State Park , on Hood Canal and US Highway 101, between Hoodsport and Shelton, presents a day of beach walks, touch tanks, children’s activities, Native American cultural presentations, and live music. Taylor Shellfish Farms will provide a seafood lunch with donations going to the Washington State Parks Foundation. The program begins at 9:30 AM and lasts until 3 PM. Potlatch State Park’s location address is 21020 US Highway 101 N, Shelton, WA. Delbert smutcoom Miller , the Skokomish Tribe’s Cultural Resource Specialist, will give a presentation about the tribe’s relationship with Hood Canal’s seafood resources and share traditional legends of the Twana (ancestral Skokomish) people. Delbert is one of the Spiritual Fathers of the house of slannay longhouse, having been initiated into Seowin nearly thirty years ago. Since the age of five, his elders have told him stories, his father having followed an old custom of bringing him to elders to “talk to my sons.” Miller has led healing ceremonies using cultural teachings at a nationally accredited in-patient addictions treatment center. -

You should shy away .from anything too deep or too happy. -Brill Building songwriter Gerry Goffin (Szatmary 2009, 67) As Charles Hamm, historian of American music, observes in his 1995 introduction to this essay written in 1970, until recently the canon in academic music study largely excluded pop ular ("vernacular") music. In 1970 Hamm suggested that scholars should look outside their largely classical music canon, and take into account a// the various forms of music created and consumed in America. His suggestion met with some remarkably intemperate responses, reminiscent of the worst of '50s rock bashing. Hamm struck out on his own, nevertheless, and produced some of the most influential writing on American popular music. According to Hamm, mainstream commercial pop in the first half of the twentieth century spoke largely about one subject: romantic love between a man and a woman. The ten most popular songs in the week of May 8, 1954 were nearly uniform in this regard, to the exclusion of any other topic.The music was equally homogenous in style.Thus, popular music in the early '50s gave a narrow and distorted view: this music did not question life in America, nor, appar ently did those who listened to it. -

Unbeknownst to him, Bruce Springsteen became my first proper ‘professor.’ Nowhere near the confines of a regular classroom, he opened the door to a kind of education like nothing I ever got in my formal schooling. From the very first notes of the song “Born in the U.S.A.,” he seized me and took me down a path of alternative learning. In only four minutes and forty seconds, the song revealed how little I knew of the world, despite all of my years in education, being a teacher, and holding senior positions. Like many people, I had thought that education was gained from the school system.
