  • The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century
“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success.

  • Neil Young - July 21, 2015
Neil Young - July 21, 2015 Neil Young is taking his campaign against genetically modified foods to the next level with his upcoming album “The Monsanto Years” and a tour that stops at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on July 21. Young has joined forces with Promise of the Real, which features Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah, for the album and the tour. “The Monsanto Years” is expected to include songs directed against Monsanto and Starbucks, which Young urged his fans to boycott last year for its part in trying to stop Vermont’s law requiring labels to disclose whether food has been genetically modified. Starbucks officials say they are not part of that effort. However, Young insists that the company is involved through the Grocery Manufacturers Association trade group. On June 16 Neil Young & Promise Of The Real will release a new studio album, The Monsanto Years, via Reprise Records. According to a statement, “the politically/ecologically-charged album will be released via participating digital retailers and Young’s online music store PonoMusic.com as well as on physical CD and vinyl in stores and through Neil’s official web store. The Monsanto Years is the first studio collaboration between Neil Young and L.A. rockers Promise Of The Real, a band fronted by Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar) and Micah Nelson (guitar, 1 / 2 Neil Young - July 21, 2015 vocals), along with Anthony Logerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass) and Tato Melgar (percussion). Young & Promise Of The Real played a stealth show on Thursday in which they debuted a slew of material presumably from the new LP.

Reel-to-Real: Intimate Audio Epistolarity During the Vietnam War Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Alan Campbell, B.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Ryan T. Skinner, Advisor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Barry Shank 1 Copyrighted by Matthew Alan Campbell 2019 2 Abstract For members of the United States Armed Forces, communicating with one’s loved ones has taken many forms, employing every available medium from the telegraph to Twitter. My project examines one particular mode of exchange—“audio letters”—during one of the US military’s most trying and traumatic periods, the Vietnam War. By making possible the transmission of the embodied voice, experiential soundscapes, and personalized popular culture to zones generally restricted to purely written or typed correspondence, these recordings enabled forms of romantic, platonic, and familial intimacy beyond that of the written word. More specifically, I will examine the impact of war and its sustained separations on the creative and improvisational use of prosthetic culture, technologies that allow human beings to extend and manipulate aspects of their person beyond their own bodies. Reel-to-reel was part of a constellation of amateur recording technologies, including Super 8mm film, Polaroid photography, and the Kodak slide carousel, which, for the first time, allowed average Americans the ability to capture, reify, and share their life experiences in multiple modalities, resulting in the construction of a set of media-inflected subjectivities (at home) and intimate intersubjectivities developed across spatiotemporal divides.
