At «ja;,.?>s t Kearsney College Chronicle JULY, 1965 Kearsney College Chronicle Vol. 6 No. 1 Juij^ 1965 EDITORIAL We are a very young school, even by South African standards. By comparison with the schools of England, we are only just hatched. But, quite humbly, we wonder whether any other Public or Private boarding school has grown and matured quite as quickly as we have. In a mere 44 years we have grown from 11, housed in a private mansion, to 460, with (as all will agree) buildings and grounds hardly surpassed in the country. In the 25 years at Botha's Hill we have increased by 350, and the original bleak and bare setting can now scarcely be visualised. There is no boasting in this. We are quite convinced that this school was needed, and that throughout its development the hand of Providence has been at work. The early private venture was not allowed to disintegrate, although at one stage faith and sacrifice was needed to save the school from dying. But it was willed that we should survive, and that our faith should be justified. So we see our young life now divided into three parts. There was the period of foundation, under the right Headmaster; a humble unambitious period m which stress was unostentatiously laid on those things which matter: tome, character, humility, tremendous loyalty from those who loved their school. When these foundations were well and truly laid, there followed the second stage, again under the right Headmaster: one of bricks and mortar, a physical develop ment, one which saw us grow and grow, in numbers and influence, until we could regard ourselves as a school which was making a real impact upon the wider community.

An Inspired Education EDITION 2 6 │ 22 AUGUST 2018 EDITION 26 │ 22 A UGUST 2018 WEEKLY SCRIPTURE This week in the Foundation Phase the children will learn ab out God being the Light of the W orld. This got me thinking of how the Bible also makes mention of us being the light. The following devotion has been adapted from Proverbs 31 Ministries (written by Holly Gerth) and holds a powerful message. God bless. "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine Sometimes in life you may find yourself being like a light bulb that says, "I have to find a way to shine!" This light bulb may go to a self -help meeting to learn more about its inner capacity for light. It may read books about how to get brighter. Each morning the light bulb may even get up and recite positive affirmations: "I am a light bulb. I believe in myself. I will shine!" But yet, nothing happens. Eventually the light bulb becomes weary and discouraged. It begins to doubt who it is and what it can do. It almost burns out completely. However, what if one day the light bulb was carefully placed in a fixture? Light would burst forth and fill the room. The light bulb would then finally understand. The key was not to try harder but to plug into the source.

  • South Africa's Exclusive Schools
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TOURISM AND GLOBAL LEARNING IN SOUTH AFRICAN HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS by CHRISTINE ANNE McGLADDERY Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree PhD in Tourism Management in the FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA Supervisor: Professor Berendien Anna Lubbe Co-Supervisor: Professor Jarkko Saarinen August 2016 - i - © University of Pretoria - ii - © University of Pretoria ABSTRACT There is a growing demand in the literature for rigorous empirical research to test the underpinning assumption of international education theory, namely that global learning occurs as a consequence of international travel. Through the application of a global learning survey instrument to 1152 Grade 11 learners in 16 South African exclusive independent high schools, evidence is provided to indicate that significant global learning only occurs when the international travel experience is facilitated to encourage learning, when there is a desire by learners to engage with cultural differences at their travel destination, and when learners feel comfortable expressing their opinions within their tour group. Furthermore, some types of international educational tourism are more conducive to global learning than others. Additionally, a conceptual, process-driven model of international educational tourism is proposed based on the synthesis of educational tourism, international education, experiential education and global learning theories. The model is tested and refined through analysis of the data collected from the questionnaire. By conceptualising educational tourism as a process it overcomes the limitations associated with segment- based definitions and in doing so demonstrates the potential for hybridising educational tourism with other sectors of the industry. Finally, owing to the expense involved with international travel, non-travel related factors are identified which encourage global learning in high school children.

  • 011 – OBITUARY for DENIS EMERY
South African National Society History - Culture and Conservation. Join SANS. Founded in 1905 for the preservation of objects of Historical Interest and Natural Beauty http://sanationalsociety.co.za/ PO Box 47688, Greyville, 4023, South Africa Email: [email protected] | Tel: 071 746 1007 NEWS BRIEF OBITUARY DENIS EMERY SLANEY – 14 NOVEMBER 1929 TO 11 FEBRUARY 2015 Denis Slaney was born in Durban and grew up in Overport near Overport House and McCord’s Hospital. He was educated at Durban High School and studied at the University of Natal [Pietermaritzburg]. He trained to be a teacher and on leaving university taught for one term at Port Shepstone High School before being posted to Estcourt High School where he taught history and geography for the next twenty years. He in fact taught, or as he liked to put it “tried to teach” his future wife, Dawn Hope, for four years. Twenty years later they married in1971. Shortly afterwards Denis was promoted as Vice Principal and Head of History at Northlands Boys’ High School and they moved to Durban. He and Dawn lived at Westville where soon after their arrival their son Kevin was born. They lived there for the next forty-two years. Although Denis was a strict disciplinarian, he won the respect of his pupils as a result of his fairness and the ability to pass on his knowledge. Dawn and Kevin were touched by the number of past pupils who contacted them and remembered Denis with affection. From Northlands Denis was promoted to Head Master of Brettonwood High School and finally Head Master of George Campbell High School.

  • NOTES and QUERIES Moray Comrie
67 Notes and Queries A letter from MrR. O. Pearse In our last issue, we carried correspondence from the renowned Estcourt headmaster on the subject of Alan Paton and his student and early teaching days, and took the liberty of quoting a mention of Mr Pearse from Paton's autobiography. Mr Pearse has responded to those notes. Before I go any further, I think I should say a word in my own defence. I refer to the Alan Paton episode which I sent you. If you have any keen eyed literary sleuths amongst your readers they have already written to you to say the episode can hardly be correct as Alan left College at the end of 1934, and King George's Silver Jubilee was in the early part of 1935. See the history of Maritzburg College, For Hearth and Home, by Simon Haw and Richard Frame, page 257: 'At the end of that year (1934) he (Paton) accepted a post as the principal of Diepkloof'. With all due respect to the author of a very fine book, Haw is wrong here. (He repeats the error on page 489). I had one year at College on the Staff, 1935, and for the first six months was very closely associated with Alan. The offer of a reformatory post only came to Alan from Hofmeyr round about March, and Alan discussed the offer with me on a number of occasions. I know he left College at the end of June 1935. In his Towards the Mountain Alan gives no date as to when he left College, but there is a very clear clue on page 139, where Alan says, speaking of his arrival in Johannesburg, 'He (Cornelius Olivier, senior probation officer of Johannesburg) put me in his car and took me to see Diepkloof Reformatory.

(Sol. 4:7) Knowing who we are, somehow changes our face: It changes our face in the mirror. It softens our face as we face the world. It turns our face, unashamedly towards God. May we not forgo remembering who we are. For the fact of the matter is - we are more daughter than anything else. No other name given to us stands more permanent than that name. No other title we carry will surpass that one. No other calling is greater. We are chosen, valuable, beautiful and secure. We are in Christ. We are powerful in him and beautiful because He is.
