WEEKLY SCRIPTURE

A s N ational W omen ’s Day approaches nex t Friday let us remember this…

You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you. (Sol. 4:7)

Knowing who we are, somehow changes our face: It changes our face in the mirror. It softens our face as we face the world. It turns our face, unashamedly towards God. May we not forgo remembering who we are. For the fact of the matter is - we are more daughter than anything else. No other name given to us stands more permanent than that name. No other title we carry will surpass that one. No other calling is greater. We are chosen, valuable, beautiful and secure. We are in Christ. We are powerful in him and beautiful because He is. Now, go out in the world - and shine!

MESSAGE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL HEADMASTER

fferen I have taken note of some of our pre sident’s words in a few Business Insider articles o ver the past week. President Ramaphosa has expressed, inter alia , that the South African educ ation system needs to change to better serve our young people by focusing on appropriate skills and dispositions for their time. Furthermore, he also highlights that a university degree is not a ticket to a job.

We recognise this, as uncomfortable as it may be, as truth at Thomas More College. Yes, we are bound by the education sy stem and a paradigm of examinations which, by and large, depend on the retention of chunks of information and data. Unemploy ment levels are at their highest since 2008; we celebrate a national pass rate in the 70% region annually; our national pass requirements are appallingly low ; for every 100 students who begin Grade 1 in South Africa, 40 will reach Grade 12, 28 of whom will pass.

Something is horribly wrong. Our young people are being failed. The 60 / 100 who didn’t get to matric – where are they? What are they doing? I am unable to answ er this definitively, but I don’ t entertain a positive answer to this question.

Thomas More College students must see the world beyond their own personal challenges and ambitions. We are privileged here . How will our young people leverage their privilege to be a part of a solution for which our country is desperate? This is why we speak of Tomorrow’s Leaders Today. Key to th is leadership growth process, in my opinion, are the following skills and dispositions:

SKILL CORRESPONDING DISPOSITIO N Composure Emotional resilience Curiosity Mental agility Creativity Courage Critical Thinking Self-knowledge Citizenship Gratitude Communication Connectedness

The Country Fair was a wonderful reminder of the enormous and challenging feats of whic h we are capable as a community. On that note, I must thank our Country Fair Chairman, Gareth Curtis, the indomitable Rae Griesel, a nd the entire team of staff, parents and pupils who realised this outstanding rendition of this event. It is, of course, a case in point of how the will and shared vision of a community can outdo even its previous best efforts. Similarly, our drive to prepare our young people in the very best way possible for an uncertain future is achiev able through our commitment to An Inspired E ducation .

By focusing on and developing overtly the abovementioned key skills and dispositions (which I intend to unpack in the coming weeks) , we will continue to grow our young people to harness the uncertainty of thi ngs, and thr iv e .

MORE TAL K │ EDITIO N 23 │ 02 AUGUST 2019

on Saturday! As usual, there was much enthusiasm among the children, and it was gre at to see them have fun and enjoy themselves. Well done to Country Fair convener, Gareth Curtis, Rae Griesel, the Parents’ Council members and their teams for all the hard work over an extended period of time. Thank you very much to all staff, parents and pupils in all phases for your assistance and support. Your loyalty and commitment for our school is valued, and once again exemplifies our ethos. I felt very proud to be a part o f Thomas More. All in all it was a delightful day! A special thank you to tho se parents who came again on the Sunday morning and worked hard clearing up and trying to get our campus school ready for Monday. It is truly appreciated.

There were a few of our staff members away today at the Proudly Primary conference, which ran from l ast night right through to lunch time Saturday. We do, wherever we feasibly can, send our staff to different staff development on various things to equip them further to offer an inspired education to our young people, who are tomorrow’s leaders. I thank t hem for being willing to give up their precious time and also to all those who also assisted by helping out with classes or taking extra sport or cultural activitie s to enable the others to attend.

On Monday our Grade 4 and 5 pupils leave with their teache rs on their eagerly awaited Outdoor Grade trip, to Roselands and Twinstreams respectively. We know that every precaution has been taken to keep them safe and to enable them to have a happy a nd memorable time, make new friends across the grade and learn new skills, while enjoying God’s creation in nature. A huge thank you once again to Mr Moolman, who oversees many aspects as part of his HOD portfolio, the Grade Heads and to all staff accompanyi ng them - it is truly valued! On their return photos will be put on Face Book.

We hope you also refuel your energy over the coming long week -end, starting from 10:45 on Thursday for the Senior Primary. There are thus no matches or any sport or cultural activities on Thursday, Friday or Saturday , bar the practices schedu led for Fame , which you already know about. Thanks to those rehearsing for our play over this long week -end and to those teachers who have given up their time in the best interests of our Grade 6 and 7s.

Friday 9 August is National Women’s Day. To all th e women in our community, we salute you for the multiple roles you play and the glue you are in keeping society together, for your warmth, courage, conviction and determination in moulding young lives positively and/or making a difference. Women’s month (n ot just day) is a reminder to fill your cup so that you can continue to fill the cups of others in your life because, when your cup is empty, you have nothing to give. Have a fabulous Women's Day.

Wishing you all the best for the short week ahead.
