2006 Rubicon Estate Rubicon Cab Sauvproduct-timed-pdf - Rutherford *MAGNUM - *94pts - Wine Enthusiast

Why We're Drinking It

It's an undeniable fact that has a way with wine. Inside this (incredibly hard-to-find) Rubicon magnum are all the spoils of a lifetime of hard work. Coppola's intention back in 1975 when he purchased the old Inglenook Estate was to reunite the original vineyards and create world-class wines. And that is exactly what he did. In 2011, after accomplishing his goals, he aptly renamed the Estate back to Inglenook, which is what it will be known as from now on.

Rubicon is the Estate's flagship wine, which is a blend that varies from year to year, produced from the best selections of the Estate’s 235 acres of certified-organic vineyards, including Clone #29 . This unique Cabernet Sauvignon clone is considered to be the defining heart of the Rubicon blend. It's certified by the University of California at Davis as a heritage clone, and is considered the essential building block of the Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon reputation.

The 2006 Rubicon Estate Rubicon Cabernet Sauvignon is a marriage of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% . Smooth and supple, this cellar-must will captivate you from the get-go. Starting with aromas of blackberries and currants, it evolves into chocolate notes. Dark cherries entice the palate along with spices and smoke. Lingering notes of sandalwood add to its captivating finish.

Inside Fact: Wine Spectator scored the 1941 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon a perfect 100 points, deeming it one of the top wines of the century.

The Story to Know

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola purchased the old Inglenook property, intent to restore the historic chateau, reunite the original vineyards, and create world-class red wines. Situated in Rutherford, one of the premier growing regions of Cabernet Sauvignon in California, the estate strives to preserve the traditions of its predecessor by crafting world-class wines. It took more than twenty years to reunite all of the original vineyards and restore winemaking to the Chateau. Now that this is complete, they have chosen to rename the property Inglenook.

Reviews

Here’s one of the best finds that we’ve come across in some time. This one is so good; even our founder’s mouth fell open when he saw it. It certainly appears that this is the only place that you can find magnums of 2006 Rubicon outside of the winery. Truly one of the most iconic bottles in Napa Valley, this wine is produced from heritage clones that are planted in the original Inglenook vineyards, deep in the heart of Rutherford. It’s a blend that’s been aged in 80% new French oak for 22 months and the result is a treat to keep in your cellar for many years to come.

A deeply colored garnet, this jewel presents aromas of herbs, blackberries and currents, with some dusty chocolate notes showing through. Round and supple, with dark cherry, spices and smoke on the palate, the lingering notes of currant and sandalwood offer a pleasing finish to this classy thoroughbred. This is, without a doubt, a trophy for any cellar. -PM

The new Rubicon, which is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon, brings to mind the 2003 and 2004. It doesn’t have the sheer force of 2002 or 2005, but it’s certainly a classic Rutherford wine, and has a good future. Bone dry, it shows herb-infused flavors of blackberries, cocoa, spices and smoky sandalwood, and yes, the tannins are dusty. Drinkable now, with a good decant, and should develop in the bottle over the next 6–8 years. - WE

Supple, graceful and harmonious, with a mix of ripe, fleshy espresso, mocha, dried currant and dusty berry fruit that's focused and persistent, ending with firm yet integrated tannins. Best from 2011 through 2016. -WS
