  • 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown Rutherford Napa Valley
2017 CABERNET SAUVIGNON ESTATE GROWN RUTHERFORD NAPA VALLEY A BRIEF HISTORY For decades, it has been our goal to produce a Rutherford AVA, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the early Cabernets of Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyard, we’ve spent the past 20 years finding, farming and obtaining highly sought after land in Rutherford—with particular attention to the Rutherford Bench—to pursue our dream and perfect our craft. It all began with the acquisition of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994. This prime real estate provided us with 40 acres of soil perfectly suited to grow Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon and a century-old facility in which we would become Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon producers for the first time. Immediately following our move to Rutherford, Frank Leeds—longtime Frog’s Leap Vineyardist—agreed to a partnership between Frog’s Leap and his family’s Chavez Leeds Vineyard. This generational vineyard situated on the iconic Rutherford Bench gave us our first real taste of how complex and connected dry-farmed, organically-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied part of the appellation could be. Finally, in 2007, we purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 and is located only a stone’s throw away from the two vineyards that originally inspired us. Now mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc the Rossi Vineyard completed the picture by yielding high quality Rutherford grapes for an all estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon to stand with our predecessors.

  • Conversations with Winemakers in Spain's Penedès Region1
Conversations with Winemakers in Spain’s Penedès Region1 Prepared by Lucia and John Gilbert, June 2015 We have been studying the career paths of U.S. winemakers who are women, mostly in California, for the past three years (www.womenwinemakers.com), and are extending this research to winemakers in Spain. Our first trip, in July 2014, was to the Rioja wine region where we had conversations with several of its women winemakers.2 Our more recent trip, in April 2015, was to the Penedès, a wine region located in the autonomous community of Catalonia and a short drive west of Barcelona. A Parés Baltà Vineyard high above Sant Marti Sarroca We stayed at a small hotel in the town of Vilafranca del Penedès. This location was selected because it was an easy drive from the hotel to the wineries that we had arranged to visit well in advance. Appointments are required. Arranging the Visits and Conversations We were fortunate to be able to schedule winery visits and conversations with five highly impressive women we identified through our research. These five women craft their wines at bodegas having varying levels of production and are involved in producing Cava, still wines, or both. Laura Tragant at Codorníu, Eva Plazas Torné at Vilarnau, Maria Elena Jiménez and Marta Casas at Parés Baltà, and Mireia Torres Maczassek at Jean Leon Winery (and Torres Priorat) are the winemakers with whom we arranged visits and had our conversations. Each and every visit and conversation was truly memorable. The hospitality was exceptional and the conversations thoughtful and informative.

OUR STORY Atalon Napa Valley is inspired by the diversity encompassed within this storied region, and driven by an intrepid spirit of discovery. Our philosophy—a combination of ongoing exploration and uncompromising quality—arises from a deeply rooted relationship with the land. We take a fresh approach, sourcing Bordeaux-style wines from exclusive locations and allowing them to honor their origins with an elegance and complexity that lies at the very heart of contemporary Napa Valley life. OUR WINES Atalon Napa Valley produces exceptional wines cultivated in elite appellations. From alluvial benchlands to high-elevation mountainsides, each carefully selected terroir yields wines of remarkable varietal character. With the composite expression of these terroir sites in our Cabernet Sauvignon, Pauline’s Cuvée and Sauvignon Blanc, we demonstrate our commitment to in-depth local exploration of this incredible region. WINEMAKING At Atalon Napa Valley, we understand that winemaking is a mysterious combination of intuition and science. Everything depends upon an alignment between the land and climate, upon a deep awareness of the interplay between seasonal fluctuation and geographical features—from soil type to the slope of a hillside vineyard. Spring 2012 CHEZ FRANÇOIS Restaurant Volume 25 Issue 1 555 Main Street, Vermilion, Ohio 44089 • www.Chezfrancois.com • A publication for friends and guests of Chez François. Dear Friend of Chez François, Thank you for your patronage this past year. We feel blessed to have you as our guest and we look forward to continued success this coming year. Fair, fair...what is all this talk about fairness? Few things are ever truly fair. It seems those who complain about fairness are the ones that don’t really do anything. They never learn that you have to work hard in life, yet feel entitled to many rights they never earned. When in fact, the only right they have in America is the right of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. From early childhood we were taught that if you believe in an idea and work hard to execute and have faith in that idea, then you will be successful. It is easy to have an idea, but quite another to commit the time and effort on a daily basis. Inevitably, there will be negative influences along the way and those who will try to criticize, but diligence and persistence guide one through these times. Criticism is fine, as long as it’s constructive and one learns and improves from it, which is what we’ve done for the past 25 years...always striving for improvement in the pursuit of excellence. So if others are more successful than we are, bear in mind it is likely the result of a great deal of time and devotion towards a solid concept and often of great sacrifice too.
