WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome and thank you for being part of the 2019 Sonoma County Wine Auction! We’re thrilled you have joined us for this extraordinary afternoon, one that provides a powerful and far reaching impact on the lives of those in our Sonoma County community. Funds raised today support over 60 local nonprofit organizations focused on literacy, education, health and human services, the environment, and arts and culture. This wouldn’t be possible without your help. With your contributions we can continue to showcase the power of giving. We can enable organizations that feed the homeless, improve mental health for those in need, provide nutrition to pantries for vulnerable families, inspire young minds with music and theater and have the ability to respond to unexpected challenges this county may face in the future. This community truly flourishes from this philanthropic endeavor and your support. Last spring the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation was honored to receive the North Bay Business Journal’s 2019 North Bay Community Philanthropy Award. This award would not be possible without your generosity as well as those of our vintners, sponsors and donors who give of their time and resources and are instrumental in the success of our Foundation. This year we are honored to have two incredible Honorary Chairs, Gina Gallo and Christopher Jackson, who have joined this important mission to support our community. We appreciate their time, dedication and passion for Sonoma County. Again, we thank each and every one of you for your unbelievable support. Your participation will make a difference for generations to come. Cheers! She learned this from her great uncle, Ernest, and grandfather, Julio. They believed that the quality of a vineyard is in the footsteps of its growers, and that in order to earn the vine’s bounty, you must tend the land carefully and with great respect. As a mother to twin daughters with husband Jean-Charles Boisset, Gina is equally dedicated to instilling these lessons of love for the land and passion for the flavors of its abundance. As Vice President of Estate Winemaking for E. & J. Gallo Winery, Gina works alongside three generations of the Gallo family in pursuit of a single goal: to honor the craft of winemaking and to carry on the incredible legacy of their founders. 1414 15 HONORARY CHAIRS HONORARY CO-CHAIR CHRISTOPHER JACKSON Raised in Sonoma County, the son of Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson grew up surrounded by wine and cultivated a deep respect for the challenges and unique rewards of high-elevation winegrowing. Today he is immersed in all aspects of the business, with particular focus on Stonestreet Estate Winery and the enduring quest to craft wines of distinct character and complexity. He also founded and runs a craft beer company, Seismic Brewing Company, that is distributed throughout most of California and has a taproom location in downtown Sebastopol. Together with his wife, Ariel, Christopher takes the long view, preserving the land and legacy of this region so that it can be enjoyed for years to come. The couple have three young sons. 14 1515 HONOREES VINTNER HONOREE MERRY EDWARDS Merry Edwards Winery Legendary winemaker Merry Edwards began her career at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974 after earning a master’s degree in Food Science with an emphasis in Enology from UC Davis (UCD). She was one of three women in the master’s program, and the only one who became a winemaker. In 1975, Merry selected cuttings from Mount Eden’s Pinot Noir vineyard and sent them to UCD for heat treatment to remove viruses and for propagation. This field selection became "UCD Clone 37", also known as the “Merry Edwards Selection” and a star performer in the Russian River Valley today. Merry became the founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977, and later became a consultant for numerous wineries, large and small. By 1997, her family and friends joined Merry to found her eponymous label. In 2008, they completed a state- of-the-art winery in Sebastopol that has thrived by producing critically acclaimed Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In 2019, Merry Edwards Winery was acquired by Louis Roederer, and Merry remains on the team to aid with the transition. As part of this grand year for Merry, we welcome her as this year’s Vintner Honoree. • David Ramey Interview
David Ramey interview Elin McCoy | June 9, 2018 | Magazine: July 2018 Issue With an early career influenced by some of the most respected names in the world of French wine, this classically minded innovator went on to become one of the key figures in wine in California. Elin McCoy meets the Ramey Cellars founder... David Ramey and his wife Carla ‘Okay, we’re an American success story,’ David Ramey admits with a satisfied smile as I look at the line-up of 27 bottles on a table at Ramey Cellars in Healdsburg. Most are current releases. ‘Our winery is like a chef-owned restaurant,’ he explains. The wines are signature dishes; he’s ‘the chef of the cellar’. At 6’ 1”, white-haired and casually dressed, Ramey could easily be mistaken for a laid-back Western rancher – but he is one of California’s most accomplished winemakers, known especially for his lush-textured Chardonnays. Over the past 40 years, he’s built the reputation of half a dozen famous wineries, achieved his artistic vision at his own Ramey Cellars, and now, at 67, still has the enthusiasm to embark on new projects. But there’s more. As a pioneer of traditional winemaking techniques and champion of the idea of terroir, he heavily influenced the direction of California wine as both he and the industry were coming into their own. Like so many winemakers of his generation, Ramey didn’t grow up with wine. He attended the University of California Santa Cruz, where he hated science and was no good at calculus, so studied American literature instead.

An Idyllic Winery on Westside Road – “Might we suggest a jaunt to the MacRostie Winery and Vineyards, the esteemed estate that’s finally got a ‘What’s a new word for idyllic?’ tasting room. The barnlike estate house is a modern, airy structure, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening up to decks overlooking the vineyards and Mount Saint Helena. It’s nice. You’ll be greeted with a taste of pinot noir rosé. You could stay inside, or you could wander around for a bit, leisurely comparing your options. There are sofas in the main house, patios everywhere, wooden tables under a sycamore by a bubbling fountain... and a totally secluded spot under a big oak. Your call, but it would be tough to go wrong here. And then you’ll find yourself gazing off into the sun setting on the horizon, working your way through one of the three tasting options (the “Evolution” is three pinots), and maybe, as a thought exercise, trying to come up with a single thing wrong with this entire scenario. Maybe your elbow might itch for a second?” – Sarah Sung, April 2015, UrbanDaddy.com MacRostie Estate House Adds Aesthetic Impact to Westside Road – “Westside Road winds through some of the most picturesque vineyards in Sonoma, past hillsides that look like green corduroy, ribbed with grapevines producing some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California. There’s one new driveway along this hallowed back road that demands that you put on the brakes.” – Paige Porter Fischer, April 2015, San Francisco Chronicle 5 Relaxing Places to Eat & Drink in Wine Country – “The MacRostie Estate House wants to host you in its spiffy new digs.
