Jordan Center for Persian Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Mateo Farzaneh and Dr. Camron Amin, we have our final program ready to be printed. We will have a number of special panels dealing with the impact of the travel ban, Abbas Amanat’s monumental book on the history of Modern Iran, and the importance of the late Iranian intellectual Dariush Shayegan. We are all set for the conference which will have many attendees, as well as lots of Persian food! One of our main concerns is the visa situation for our colleagues in Iran. As the President of AIS, I have written letters for all those who are planning to attend and are attempting to receive a U.S. visa. Unfortunately, some of our colleagues from Iran have been denied visas to attend the conference. I hope that in the coming months there will be a change in the policies of some of the U.S. embassies in the Persian Gulf countries and the rest of the Middle East. Pardeh-Khani a Conceptual Model for Iranian National Cinema
PARDEH-KHANI A CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOR IRANIAN NATIONAL CINEMA MAJID FADAEI THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY CULTURAL CENTER UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA KUALA LUMPUR 2014 ABSTRACT This research has proposed Iran’s traditional art of Pardeh-khani as a suitable and applicable model for attaining a national cinema in this country; Pardeh-khani (pictorial storytelling) or Parde-dari is a kind of storytelling and minstrelsy with painted canvases that some scenes of epic, myth, moral and especially religious stories are painted on them. Mixture of speech and image in Pardeh-khani cause this kind of storytelling in the most popular and dramatic kind within Iran ancient arts. Pardeh-khani is very similar to modern art of cinema which served an analogous function in the past. Iran’s cinema, despite producing decorated works and eye-catching successes in global festivals during its 110-years history (1900-2010), has not been able yet to gain its actual position and status. It has failed to become a national cinema having a unique identity. As a matter of fact, despite all cultural and artistic potentials and capabilities of ancient Iran’s civilization and also presence of creative artists, Iran’s cinema has not managed to possess a national style with an identity commensurate with culture and identity of this civilization. By investigating different dimensions of this art that enjoyed remarkable popularity among Iranians along the history until a near past, this study attempts to render a theoretical and practical framework for national cinema in Iran. i ABSTRAKT Kajian ini adalah mengenai kesenian tradisional Iran Pardeh-khani yang boleh dijadikan aplikasi model yang sesuai untuk mendapatkan pawagam bertaraf nasional di Negara ini. -

The Shahname of Firdowsi The Shahname of Firdowsi by Iraj Bashiri copyright, Bashiri 1993, 2003 and 2008 Introduction The conflict between the present-day Uzbeks and their Tajik neighbors that is at times inflamed has a long and multi-faceted history. On the one hand, it is related to the ancient history of the two peoples, when the Turks, arriving in Central Asia from the confines of Mongolia, overthrew Iranian rule, including Tajik rule. And, on the other hand, it is related to the resilience of the Tajik culture and the ability of the Tajiks to retain their authority in spite of the might of the Turkish sultans and amirs. In recent decades, especially after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Turks revived Pan-Turkism, once again denying the Tajiks their identity. In this regard, they often cite Afrasiyab from the epic of Firdowsi, as the eponymous ancestor of the Turks. This claim presents several difficulties. First, both in the ancient Iranian texts and in Firdowsi's Shahname, Afrasiyab is a mythical character. He is not the real-world king that, for instance, al-Tabari would like us to believe.[1] Secondly, within the myth, he is a Turanian who has lost his farr (kingly glory) and seeks to restore it. This means that the Turanians of the Shahname are of Iranian stock. Thirdly, a review of the Orkhon inscriptions and life on the steppe indicates that neither the Turanians nor the Iranians of the Shahname share the öz (real) Turk cultural heritage of which the Turks are proud. -

Nizami Ganjawi’s Khosrow and Shirin is a polysemous medieval romance set in Sassanid Persia. This article examines how the Persian poet, Nizami, retold a well known story and integrated it within a philosophical worldview, but in a language and style that needs to be deciphered. The focus of this article is how Nizami used the philosophical idea of the “active intellect,” or the tenth intelligence, in his literary masterpiece, Khosrow and Shirin. Keywords: Nizami; Persian literature; polysemous romance. Resumen. Khosrow y Shirin de Nizami Ganjawi es un romance polisémico medieval ambientado en la Persia sasánida. Este artículo examina como el poeta persa relató una historia conocida y se adentró en esas cosmovisiones que necesitan ser descifradas. Este artículo se centra en como Nizami se sirvió de la idea filosófica del intelecto activo o la décima inteligencia en su obra maestra literaria. In the famous Persian romance, Khosrow and Shirin, this quest is set in motion when Princess Shirin, on a leisurely walk, comes across a picture of the Persian prince, Khosrow, dangling from a tree branch. -

The description of Kurdistan given by Mustawfi (which Hajji Khalfah has copied almost verbatim into his Jihan Numd) presents a number of small problems which I find myself unable satisfactorily to solve. Kurdistan, or the Land of the Kurds, is not mentioned by the earlier Arab geographers, and it appears to have been first erected into a separate government under the Saljuks, who, in the time of Sulayman Shah, divided it off from the rest of the Jibal Province, which they called Persian 'Irak, as explained in Chapter 2. R. Ghanoonparvar This dissertation examines representations of identity in the fiction works of Iranian author Hushang Golshiri. An extensive, theoretically grounded examination of Golshiri’s attention to five different aspects of identity in his novel Ayenehha-ye Dardar is the focal point of the research presented herein. This examination is supported by an exploration of these same aspects of identity in his other long works of fiction and in numerous short stories from several collections he produced. A brief biography of Golshiri’s life which is focused on his literary activities at different points in his life is included. An annotated bibliography of Golshiri’s major publications is also provided, as is a plot summary of Ayenehha-ye Dardar.
