Supplement No. 5 : 1 15-123 ; 31.X.1994 ISSN 0342-7536 A preliminary review of the classification of the zygaenid subfamily Procridinae (Lepidoptera) G. Tarmann Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Feldstrasse lia, A-6020 Innsbruck, Austria Summary In his revision of the Zygaenidae of the world, Alberti (1954) divides the Zygaenid subfamily Procridinae into the two tribes Callizygaenini and Pro- cridini. As typical for the subfamily, he mentions 9 main characters ("Leitmerk- male"). Three of them refer to the head and the wing, the other six to the sclerotized parts of the genitalia of the male and female. Studies of type material from all regions of the world have shown that the real autapomorhies of the Procridinae are found in the interior female genitalic structures. Of the nine characters mentioned as typical for Procridinae by Alberti, none is unique to this subfamily as all of them are shared with at least one other group of Zygaenidae. Therefore they cannot be used as autapomorphies for the Procridinae. As the type species of the tribe Callizygaenini, Callizygaena auratus (Cramer, 1779) (= nivimacula Felder, 1874), lacks the autapomorphies of the subfamily Procridinae, the tribe has to be excluded from the Procridinae and is considered to form a distinct subfamily of the family Zygaenidae. The remaining species in the Procridinae can be divided into two groups, the Adscita-Illiberis-group and the Artona-growp. Both are considered to form well-separated tribes within the subfamily.

EENY634 Laurelcherry Smoky Moth, Neoprocris floridana Tarmann 1984 (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Zygaenoidea: Zygaenidae: Procridinae)1 Donald W. Hall2 Introduction The Zygaenidae (burnets and smoky moths) are small, mostly day-flying moths, although Neoprocris floridana has also been collected at night at black lights by John Heppner (Tarmann 1984a, p. 77). At least three zygaenid subfamilies (Zygaeninae, Procridinae, and Chalcosiinae) appear to be monophyletic (Epstein et al. 1999). General reviews of the characteristics and biology of the Zygaenidae and subfami- lies are provided by Epstein and Adams (2009), Ebert et al. (1994), Epstein et al. (1999) and Tarmann (2004). All native New World zygaenids belong to the subfamily Procridinae. The typical resting position of zygaenids is with the wings folded back and roof-like over the abdomen (Figure 1). The family Zygaenidae is best known for the spectacular Figure 1. To be able to counteract this alarming trend it is paramount to closely monitor biodiversity at global scales. Because this is practically impossible with traditional methods, the last decade has seen a strong push for solutions. In aquatic ecosystems the monitoring of species from environmental DNA (eDNA) has emerged as one of the most powerful tools at our disposal but in terrestrial ecosystems the power of eDNA for monitoring has so far been hampered by the local scale of the samples. In this study we report the first attempt to detect insects from airborne eDNA.

EFETOV3 Joseph BURMAN4 KaMuran KAYA2 3 2 5 Elena E. KUCHERENKO Başak ULAŞLI Gerhard M. TARMANN Abstract The Zygaenidae fauna in some provinces (Aksaray, Karaman, Kayseri, Konya, Nevşehir and Niğde) of Central Anatolia was studied using attractant traps as well as by netting specimens in biotopes in 2017. The sex attractants for the Procridinae had been produced in the Crimean Federal University and were esters of 2-dodecenoic acid and isomers of 2-butanol: EFETOV-2 [racemic mixture of R- and S-enantiomers], EFETOV-S-2 [R-enantiomer] and EFETOV-S-S-2 [S-enantiomer]. Zygaena attractants were made at Canterbury Christ Church University using a range of acetate compounds with known attraction to various genera as originally identified by Priesner et al. (1984). Fourteen Zygaenidae species from four genera belonging to Procridinae and Zygaeninae subfamilies were found: Rhagades Wallengren, 1863 (1 species), Adscita Retzius, 1783 (1 species), Jordanita Verity, 1946 (4 species), and Zygaena Fabricius, 1775 (8 species). KeyWords: Central Anatolia, Procridinae, sex attractants, Turkey, Zygaenidae, Zygaeninae Öz Orta Anadolu’nun bazı illerinde (Aksaray, Karaman, Kayseri, Konya, Nevşehir ve Niğde) Zygaenidae faunasını belirlemek için 2017 yılında, türlerin yaşam alanlarında, çekici tuzaklar ve atrap kullanılarak çalışılmıştır.

The hitherto unknown males of Zygaenoprocris (Zygaenoprocris) eberti (Alberti, 1968) were at- tracted by sex pheromones in Afghanistan. Conspecificity with the female holotype was confirmed by using DNA barcoding. A description of the male and data on the habitat of this species are provided. A key to the subgenera of the genus Zygaenoprocris Hampson, 1900, and the species of the subgenus Zygaenoprocris Hampson, 1900, is given.
