Erev Rosh Hashanah 5780 By Rabbi Debbie Stiel Aging Well: The Stories We Tell Ourselves and the Company We Keep Another year has gone by. And another one is starting. The years seem to come and go with increasing speed! And you and I don’t get any younger! Aging brings out a certain philosophical quality in many of us. We start to think about the days we have had and those left to us – especially when those remaining are fewer than those that we have had. It becomes natural to ask – ‘how might we best approach the time that remains to us?’ The famous Rabbi -Hillel taught us to think of both ourselves and others – “im ain ani li mi li, uchshani l‘atzmi ma ani. If I am not for myself who am I and if I am only for myself what am I.” This holy season is a good opportunity to ask ourselves both -am I doing what I need to for myself and am I helping others? Often, we focus on the altruistic second part. Tonight, I would like to focus on the first part of this equation. What can we do for ourselves to live life in a way in which we feel nourished, balanced, supported, resilient? First –we might wonder, why even ask this question? Aren’t we all feeling nurtured, positive, loved, hopeful most of the time? If you look on social media or watch the red carpet – you might think so! But the truth is that life is often challenging and even painful. -

The Concluding Blessings for the Sh'ma This Blessing Completes The
The Sh’ma VI – Blessings after the Sh’ma I The Prayers of our Siddur L15 The concluding blessings for the Sh’ma This blessing completes the trilogy of blessings that surround the Sh’ma, and serves also as a prelude to the Amida. In one interpretation the two that precede it speak of ‘Creation’, that God is the source of all life, and ‘Revelation’, that God communicates with humanity, via the Jewish people through the giving of Torah. This third one, which follows, speaks of ‘Redemption’ that God intervenes in the life of the Jewish people by rescuing us from slavery in the past, and time and time again from other dangers. On another interpretation the first blessing celebrates God’s universal concern for all humanity and all of nature, before focusing on God’s particular relationship with Israel. Now as we approach the central prayer, the Amidah, where we stand before God, we are reassured that God has stood by us in past times of trouble. This blessing is also known as the ge’ullah, ‘redemption’, because of its theme of God as the One who redeems Israel from slavery, physical and spiritual. Its theme picks up the closing of the third paragraph of the Sh’ma which speaks of the Exodus from Egyptian slavery. With its emphasis on emet, ‘truth’, it is a rare early Jewish declaration of faith, an affirmation of the role God has played in Jewish history. In dark times it would have offered hope and encouragement of rescue and ultimate redemption from the trials of exile. -

The answer is yes, in a few instances, 13 TISHREI 5780 Na’anu’im being one of them. The Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 651:9) rules that the Na’anu’im begin in front and then wind around the right and conclude with up and down motions. Sepharadim (and Hassidim), though, follow the Ari z”l’s practice of shaking to the south, then Friday Night north, east, east in the upwards direction, east in a downward motion and finally to the west (Kaf HaHaim Orah Haim 651:49). Shir Hashirim 5:55 pm Maran Rav Karo writes that one performs the Na’anu’im simply by moving one’s Minha 6:05 pm hands. While Ashkenazi Jews follow this practice, Sephardic Jews fully extend their arms Candle Lighting 6:04 pm followed by Kabbalat Shabbat / holding the four Minim in a full motion back and forth, once again following the approach of the Arvit Ari z”l (Kaf HaHaim Orah Haim 651:48 and 93). Shabbat Day The Kaf HaHaim (651:96) notes that it appears from the Shuhan Aruch (op. cit.) that one moves his hands and not his body when performing the Na’anu’im. -

Ezrat Avoteinu The Final Tefillah before engaging in the Shacharit Amidah / Silent Meditative Prayer is Ezrat Avoteinu Atoh Hu Meolam – Hashem, You have been the support and salvation for our forefathers since the beginning….. The subject of this Tefillah is Geulah –Redemption, and it concludes with Baruch Atoh Hashem Ga’al Yisrael – Blessed are You Hashem, the Redeemer of Israel. This is in consonance with the Talmudic passage in Brachot 9B that instructs us to juxtapose the blessing of redemption to our silent Amidah i.e. Semichat Geulah LeTefillah. Rav Schwab zt”l in On Prayer pp 393 quotes the Siddur of Rav Pinchas ben R’ Yehudah Palatchik who writes that our Sages modeled our Tefillot in the style of the prayers of our forefathers at the crossing of the Reed Sea. The Israelites praised God in song and in jubilation at the Reed Sea, so too we at our moment of longing for redemption express song, praise and jubilation. Rav Pinchas demonstrates that embedded in this prayer is an abbreviated summary of our entire Shacharit service. Venatenu Yedidim – Our Sages instituted: 1. Zemirot – refers to Pesukei Dezimra 2. Shirot – refers to Az Yashir 3. Vetishbachot – refers to Yishtabach 4. Berachot – refers to Birkas Yotzair Ohr 5. Vehodaot – refers to Ahavah Rabbah 6. Lamelech Kel Chay Vekayam – refers to Shema and the Amidah After studying and analyzing the Shacharit service, we can see a strong and repetitive focus on our Exodus from Egypt. We say Az Yashir, we review the Exodus in Ezrat Avoteinu, in Vayomer, and Emet Veyatziv…. Why is it that we place such a large emphasis on the Exodus each and every day in the morning and the evening? The simple answer is because the genesis of our nation originates at the Exodus from Egypt. -

SHOFAR QUARTERLY MAGAZINE rpua Winter 2018 | 5779 For this winter edition of the Shofar, we continue our year-long theme, “The world stands on Torah, Avodah and Gemilat Chesed,” by focusing on Avodah. In modern Hebrew, Avodah means work. In Biblical times, it refers to sacrificial worship. For the rabbis of this teaching, it means prayer. Prayer is an offering of our heart, an expression of our gratitude, our praise, our contrition, our dreams and desires. In that way, prayer is a pillar of our world and a central focus of what we do at Beth El. Heart Healthy. Heart Holy. By Rabbi Alexander Davis Recently, a study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology indicates that wearing to tefillin can reduce heart disease. “People who wear tefillin in either the short or long-term, recorded a measurable positive effect on their blood flow. That has been associated with better outcomes in heart disease,” said Dr. Jack Rubinstein, a cardiologist and associate professor at the University of Cincinnati, who co-authored the study. Those who wear tefillin have better blood flow; the tight wrapping creates a type of preconditioning that offers protection against “acute ischemic reperfusion injury.” I’m not a doctor so I have no idea what those words mean! But as a rabbi, I concur: tefillin are good for the heart. That’s a lesson I only learned later in life. Growing up, I didn’t know anything about tefillin. I never saw my father or grandfather wear them. I didn’t receive a pair as a hand-me- Tefillin are down for my bar mitzvah. -

An RCVP’s job is to not only plan amazing and unique service and cultural programs, but to find a religious connection to every program that you TYG creates. We have developed these guidelines for use with our transliterated documents. They may or may not apply to transliterations put out by other movements including the various organizations teaching Kabbalah. a as in Creator ai as in aisle e as in red ei as in eight i as in pizza o as in no oy as in toy u as in tune ch as in Bach in German (strong sound from the throat) g as in give tz as in lots ’ typically adds an “EH” sound after a consonant, this is known as a Shva Na or pronounced Shva as in the word “Sh’ma”. - a dash is simply used to aid in pronounciation, usually if two like vowels follow each other, as in the word “da-at.” In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls somewhere else in the word. In our transliteration, when the syllable falls somewhere else other than the last syllable, that stressed syllable will be underlined. Example: Melech. Hebrew Rules The following are some of the Hebrew rules you may notice in our siddurim (connection books). In Hebrew, the accent generally falls on the last syllable, however it sometimes falls Kjl¤ n«¤ somewhere else in the word. Whenever a syllable other than the last is accented, a “meteg” (the vertical line under the first letter) will appear. The “masoret” above the letter Chaf indicates that this is a Kamatz Katan, which is lkǨ pronounced as “o”; in this example the word is “kol.” The “rafe” above a letter indicates it is a Shva Na.
