Erev Rosh Hashanah 5780 By Rabbi Debbie Stiel Aging Well: The Stories We Tell Ourselves and the Company We Keep Another year has gone by. And another one is starting. The years seem to come and go with increasing speed! And you and I don’t get any younger! Aging brings out a certain philosophical quality in many of us. We start to think about the days we have had and those left to us – especially when those remaining are fewer than those that we have had. It becomes natural to ask – ‘how might we best approach the time that remains to us?’ The famous Rabbi -Hillel taught us to think of both ourselves and others – “im ain ani li mi li, uchshani l‘atzmi ma ani. If I am not for myself who am I and if I am only for myself what am I.” This holy season is a good opportunity to ask ourselves both -am I doing what I need to for myself and am I helping others? Often, we focus on the altruistic second part. Tonight, I would like to focus on the first part of this equation. What can we do for ourselves to live life in a way in which we feel nourished, balanced, supported, resilient? First –we might wonder, why even ask this question? Aren’t we all feeling nurtured, positive, loved, hopeful most of the time? If you look on social media or watch the red carpet – you might think so! But the truth is that life is often challenging and even painful. -

If Erica Coleman not overtly political, the methods of engagement frequently had politics just beneath Copy Editor the surface. Engagement meant understanding Israel’s importance to the world Jewish community as well as its right to exist — both in a general sense and in relation to the Yakov Wisniewski events of the day. This often turned engagement into a reactive enterprise — how the commu- Design Director nity could shore up support for this policy or for that war, and how Israel’s actions could best be presented and explained. THE STEINHARDT The reasons for this were understandable. There was a widespread perception of Israel being FOUNDATION under siege and a general sentiment that Diaspora communities could serve as Israel’s ambassa- FOR JEWISH LIFE dors. Moreover, a fear of losing young Jews to waves of anti-Israel agitation spurred campaigns to arm them with Israel’s side of the story. But ultimately, such efforts were a misuse of both Michael H. Steinhardt Israel and of American Jews. As the conflict became more nuanced and information more wide- Chairman spread, the Hasbarah method — explaining Israel through public relations — came to be dis- Robert P. Three Conquests of Canaan
ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -

THE EGYPT-PALESTINE/ISRAEL BOUNDARY: 1841-1992 An Abstract of a Thesis .Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the ~egree Master of Arts Thabit Abu-Rass University of Northern Iowa July 1992 ABSTRACT In 1841, with the involvement of European powers, the Ottoman Empire distinguished by Firman territory subject to a Khedive of Egypt from that subject more directly to Istanbul. With British pressure in 1906, a more formal boundary was established between Egypt and Ottoman Palestine. This study focuses on these events and on the history from 1841 to the present. The study area includes the Sinai peninsula and extends from the Suez Canal in the west to what is today southern Israel from Ashqelon on the Mediterranean to the southern shore of the Dead Sea in the east. -

Although the members of the subcommittee do not want to make definitive judgments on the applicability of education in Israel to American needs, they are most favorably impressed by the great emphasis which the Israelis place on early childhood programs, vocational/technical education, and residential youth villages. The people of Israel are considered profoundly dedicated to the support of education at every level. The country works toward expansion of opportunities for education, based upon a belief that the educational system is the key to the resolution of major social problems. In the second part of the report, the detailed itinerary of the subcommittee is described with annotated comments about the places and persons visited. SHOFAR QUARTERLY MAGAZINE rpua Winter 2018 | 5779 For this winter edition of the Shofar, we continue our year-long theme, “The world stands on Torah, Avodah and Gemilat Chesed,” by focusing on Avodah. In modern Hebrew, Avodah means work. In Biblical times, it refers to sacrificial worship. For the rabbis of this teaching, it means prayer. Prayer is an offering of our heart, an expression of our gratitude, our praise, our contrition, our dreams and desires. In that way, prayer is a pillar of our world and a central focus of what we do at Beth El. Heart Healthy. Heart Holy. By Rabbi Alexander Davis Recently, a study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology indicates that wearing to tefillin can reduce heart disease. “People who wear tefillin in either the short or long-term, recorded a measurable positive effect on their blood flow. That has been associated with better outcomes in heart disease,” said Dr. Jack Rubinstein, a cardiologist and associate professor at the University of Cincinnati, who co-authored the study. Those who wear tefillin have better blood flow; the tight wrapping creates a type of preconditioning that offers protection against “acute ischemic reperfusion injury.” I’m not a doctor so I have no idea what those words mean! But as a rabbi, I concur: tefillin are good for the heart. That’s a lesson I only learned later in life. Growing up, I didn’t know anything about tefillin. I never saw my father or grandfather wear them. I didn’t receive a pair as a hand-me- Tefillin are down for my bar mitzvah.
