PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Chaim Strauchler FOREVER IN THE MOMENT In this week’s parsha, we read of the Jewish people’s response to the splitting of the Red Sea; they sing az yashir . We often focus on this song’s specific form, through which we rejoiced upon our deliverance. However, this moment occupies a larger place in how we live and see the world. The Talmud in Brachot 12a speaks of the prayer with which we start and end each day: Rabba bar Ḥinnana Sava said in the name of Rav: Failing to recite emet veyatziv (at the beginning of the blessing of redemption that follows Shema in the morning prayer) and emet ve’emuna (in the evening prayer) does not fulfill one’s obligation. An allusion to this diCerence between morning and evening prayers is, “To declare Your kindness in the morning and Your faith in the nights” (Psalms 92:3). In the morning, one must mention God’s loving-kindness, while in the evening one is required to emphasize faith. In explaining how we declare God’s kindness each morning, Rashi explains, “The blessing emet veyatziv relates entirely to the kindness that God performed for our ancestors: he took them from Egypt; he split the sea for them; he allowed them to cross it. The blessing emet ve’emuna speaks about the future in that we anticipate how God will fulfill his promise to redeem us…” We are forever upon the banks of the Red Sea reflecting upon how God saved and saves us. We begin every day appreciating the kindness with which God has graced us; we engage in perpetual praise of God for perpetual redemption; and we pray for the ongoing achievement of that redemption every evening and as we look to the future. We orient every morning and evening’s requests of God along this paradigm, as we take three steps forward in our Amidah prayers. It is worthwhile to think of this perspective as we say these prayers: You split the waters of the sea. You rescued the faithful; the wicked drowned. The waters engulfed Israel's enemies; not one of the arrogant remained alive. Then Your beloved sang hymns of praise, extolling you with adoring psalms. They acclaimed G-d Sovereign, great and awesome Source of all blessing, the eternal G-d, exalted in all majesty. G-d humbles the proud and raises the lowly, frees the captive and redeems the meek.     The Sh’ma VI – Blessings after the Sh’ma I The Prayers of our Siddur L15 The concluding blessings for the Sh’ma This blessing completes the trilogy of blessings that surround the Sh’ma, and serves also as a prelude to the Amida. In one interpretation the two that precede it speak of ‘Creation’, that God is the source of all life, and ‘Revelation’, that God communicates with humanity, via the Jewish people through the giving of Torah. This third one, which follows, speaks of ‘Redemption’ that God intervenes in the life of the Jewish people by rescuing us from slavery in the past, and time and time again from other dangers. On another interpretation the first blessing celebrates God’s universal concern for all humanity and all of nature, before focusing on God’s particular relationship with Israel. Now as we approach the central prayer, the Amidah, where we stand before God, we are reassured that God has stood by us in past times of trouble. This blessing is also known as the ge’ullah, ‘redemption’, because of its theme of God as the One who redeems Israel from slavery, physical and spiritual. Its theme picks up the closing of the third paragraph of the Sh’ma which speaks of the Exodus from Egyptian slavery. With its emphasis on emet, ‘truth’, it is a rare early Jewish declaration of faith, an affirmation of the role God has played in Jewish history. In dark times it would have offered hope and encouragement of rescue and ultimate redemption from the trials of exile.

    Ezrat Avoteinu The Final Tefillah before engaging in the Shacharit Amidah / Silent Meditative Prayer is Ezrat Avoteinu Atoh Hu Meolam – Hashem, You have been the support and salvation for our forefathers since the beginning….. The subject of this Tefillah is Geulah –Redemption, and it concludes with Baruch Atoh Hashem Ga’al Yisrael – Blessed are You Hashem, the Redeemer of Israel. This is in consonance with the Talmudic passage in Brachot 9B that instructs us to juxtapose the blessing of redemption to our silent Amidah i.e. Semichat Geulah LeTefillah. Rav Schwab zt”l in On Prayer pp 393 quotes the Siddur of Rav Pinchas ben R’ Yehudah Palatchik who writes that our Sages modeled our Tefillot in the style of the prayers of our forefathers at the crossing of the Reed Sea. The Israelites praised God in song and in jubilation at the Reed Sea, so too we at our moment of longing for redemption express song, praise and jubilation. Rav Pinchas demonstrates that embedded in this prayer is an abbreviated summary of our entire Shacharit service. Venatenu Yedidim – Our Sages instituted: 1. Zemirot – refers to Pesukei Dezimra 2. Shirot – refers to Az Yashir 3. Vetishbachot – refers to Yishtabach 4. Berachot – refers to Birkas Yotzair Ohr 5. Vehodaot – refers to Ahavah Rabbah 6. Lamelech Kel Chay Vekayam – refers to Shema and the Amidah After studying and analyzing the Shacharit service, we can see a strong and repetitive focus on our Exodus from Egypt. We say Az Yashir, we review the Exodus in Ezrat Avoteinu, in Vayomer, and Emet Veyatziv…. Why is it that we place such a large emphasis on the Exodus each and every day in the morning and the evening? The simple answer is because the genesis of our nation originates at the Exodus from Egypt.

Greek letter Chi and Tav in Paleo-Hebrew By Chaim Sunitsky Rashi[1] on Parshat Tetzave writes that the priests were anointed with oil, poured in the shape One would assume this is referring [כי.[of the Greek letter 2 to letter Χ[3] – 22nd letter of the Greek alphabet which sounds somewhere between English K and H[4]. This letter spelled χῖ in Greek, is usually spelled “Chi” in English and indeed if one wanted to write it כי in Hebrew, he would probably transcribe it as (where Chaf is intended without dagesh). Moreover[5], when Hebrew names are transliterated into Greek, Chi is used for Hebrew Chaf. In addition, if the Talmud meant this letter it becomes clear why it didn’t use an example of any Hebrew letter, as this shape is not found in Ashuri script of Hebrew. Despite all this evidence we find various other shapes offered by the Rishonim[6]. In fact in our printed editions of the Gemora only in Rashi on Kritot (5b) the printed illustration looks like an “X.” Some of Rambam’s editions (Kelei Hamikdash 1:9) also printed this shape, but the Frankel edition of Rambam[7] claims that neither Rashi nor Rambam had this shape in mind and it was changed later by some publishers[8]. Still, one is inclined to think that the correct explanation is that it is the letter X, and most Rishonim simply didn’t know Greek or have access to find out, and the correct tradition regarding the shape of “Greek Chi” was forgotten, despite the fact that it pertains to many halachot[9].

In deciding to compile this siddur, students embarked on an ambitious process: how could they best combine over twenty distinct creative service packets into one inclusive and comprehensive siddur which would suit the needs of the Berkeley Reform Jewish community’s prayer in all circumstances for years to come? Further, the prayer service, while in need of energy and creativity, was also worthy of respect and in due need of a certain amount of structure which service packets could not provide. It is our hope that this siddur meets that need, and accordingly that it can and will be used for Erev and Shacharit Shabbat and Havdalah services as well as song sessions. Further, it is our hope that this siddur will help to meet the same need in other youth and young adult minyanim for years to come.     The History of our Prayers - OBM June/July 2020 - Sources English The History of Communal Prayer Berakhot 8a:1 What is the meaning of that which is written: “But as for me, let my prayer be unto You, ​ ​ Lord, in a time of favor; O God, in the abundance of Your mercy, answer me with the truth of ​ Your salvation” (Psalms 69:14)? It appears that the individual is praying that his prayers will coincide with a special time of Divine favor. When is a time of favor? It is at the time when ​ ​ ​ the congregation is praying. It is beneficial to pray together with the congregation, for God ​ does not fail to respond to the entreaties of the congregation. Berakhot 2a:1-4 The beginning of tractate Berakhot, the first tractate in the first of the six orders of Mishna, ​ ​ opens with a discussion of the recitation of Shema, as the recitation of Shema encompasses an ​ ​ ​ ​ acceptance of the yoke of Heaven and of the mitzvot, and as such, forms the basis for all subsequent teachings. The Mishna opens with the laws regarding the appropriate time to recite Shema: ​ MISHNA: From when, that is, from what time, does one recite Shema in the evening? From ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ the time when the priests enter to partake of their teruma. Until when does the time for the ​ ​ recitation of the evening Shema extend? Until the end of the first watch. The term used in the ​ ​ ​ ​ Torah (Deuteronomy 6:7) to indicate the time for the recitation of the evening Shema is ​ ​ beshokhbekha, when you lie down, which refers to the time in which individuals go to sleep.
