Section 2 – Advert Specialty Doctor In Paediatrics Based at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness 40 Hours per Week Salary £41,986 - £78,294 pro rata/per annum Ref: MS17051866 Applications are invited for the post of Speciality Doctor which is available from April 2021 on a fixed-term basis to cover for a maternity leave. You will be based at Raigmore Hospital, and will work alongside Consultant and other middle grade colleagues. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 years full time postgraduate training in the specialty (or equivalent), and have experience of Middle Grade on call. Your duties will involve general Paediatrics and Neonates. Whilst this is a non training post, you will be encouraged to develop new skills and maintain existing special skills and interests. Section 3 – Job Information INFORMATION ABOUT THE PAEDIATRIC DEPARTMENT An opportunity has arisen for a fixed term contract to a suitably qualified Specialty Doctor Paediatrician from April 2021 to cover for a maternity leave. We see this as an opportunity to continue to develop as a centre of excellence in secondary paediatric care. We are looking for individuals who would relish the opportunities and challenges of delivering high quality care across the Highland Region. The role is within the Paediatric Service within NHS Highland, participating in a range of general paediatric outpatient clinics and hotweek/oncall responsibilities for the Highland Children’s unit which includes level 2 neonatal cover. We are also looking to develop certain sub specialist services. The establishment currently comprises 10 hospital consultant paediatricians (5 WTE, 4 part-time 2.9 WTE), 1 combined post 0.9wte) W.T.E in Hospital and community paediatrics and 5 (3.7 WTE) community consultant paediatricians (the latter do not take part in out of hours work). Our team of paediatricians are supported professionally by Regional and National Managed Clinical Networks. Local Lead clinicians are supported by visiting specialist clinics in Neurology, Oncology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Genetics, Endocrinology, Urology, Cardiology, Complex Respiratory and HIV/Immunology, and metabolic medicine. Raigmore Hospital is part of the North of Scotland Neonatal Network. Comprehensive local guidelines (with links to national guidance) for common neonatal, paediatric and neurodevelopmental problems are available on the hospital intranet. NEONATOLOGY Raigmore Hospital has a modern well-equipped Level 2 Neonatal Unit with two intensive care cots and 14 special care cots and we act as a referral centre for the maternity units in Wick, Fort William, Stornoway and Elgin. Wherever possible, neonates under 28 weeks gestation are transferred in-utero. The Neonatal Unit functions as part of the Northern Neonatal MCN, and also enjoys significant support from the Northern Neonatal Retrieval Service. The neonatal nurse complement includes two Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. The network consists of Aberdeen and Dundee as tertiary centres. GENERAL PAEDIATRICS We provide general paediatric clinics in Raigmore Hospital, Fort William, Wick, Thurso, Broadford and Portree Hospitals on Skye, and Golspie. This gives staff an opportunity to experience the challenges of rural medicine and explore the stunning scenery of the Highland Region. Specialist clinics include regular Oncology, Epilepsy and Cystic Fibrosis clinics held within the dedicated paediatric outpatient suite and weekly Diabetes Clinics in the new Diabetes Centre. Associate specialists in community paediatrics are based throughout the Highlands and out patient clinics are held in various locations. The Children’s Unit has recently undergone an exciting refurbishment, thanks to enthusiastic fundraising by the local community, supported by the ARCHIE foundation. The children’s ward has 32 in-patient beds, including eight cubicles and a four bedded high dependency area and 6 day case beds. In addition to the planned consultant staffing level of 10 general paediatricians (8.4 WTE), the post is supported by three SASG (2.6 wte), five specialty trainees in paediatrics, four GPSTs, two FY2s, two ANNPs and two advanced paediatric nurse practitioners. We have a robust middle grade rota , consultantsare on call 24/24 but do not provide residential on-call cover. CLINICAL ACTIVITY Each year approximately 1300 new patients and 4100 return patients are seen in the Medical Paediatric clinics at Raigmore and peripheral hospitals in Highland. There are approximately 1750 medical paediatric admissions to Children's ward each year and a further 350 day cases. There are around 350 infants admitted to SCBU each year. The SCBU undertakes long-term neonatal intensive care, and has facilities to ventilate up to four infants at a time. Babies under 28 weeks gestation are transferred to a tertiary neonatal unit, ideally in-utero or following delivery by a regional neonatal transport team. Annual delivery rate is around 2100. There are regular Audit Meetings including Morbidity and Mortality meetings within the Department of Paediatrics and close links with the Consultant Obstetricians, Community Paediatricians and Consultants in the Department of Child & Family Psychiatry.
