Introduction This paper is concerned with Nubian kinship terms, including terms for consanguineal relations, i.e. blood relations such as ‘father’s sister’ and ‘sister’s son’ and terms for affinal relations, i.e. relations by marriage such as ‘father-in-law’. There are two functions for kinship terms: they can be used as terms of reference and as terms of address. Often the term of reference differs from the term of address. A Nubian example is the Kenzi reference term -baab ‘father’ (always connected with a possessive prefix) and the term of address baboo ‘daddy’ or abo ‘father’, ‘God Father’ (Massenbach 1933: 120). The distinction between terms of reference and terms of address is often ignored. In this paper, all the kinship terms presented are terms of reference. Kinship terms can be regarded as labels for concepts of specific social relations. Presently, the on-going Arabization of the Nubian languages and cultures in Sudan changes the concept of the originally matrilineal kinship system to a patrilineal one. The formerly important social role of mother’s relatives, especially the importance of mother’s brothers and sister’s sons — the latter being considered as heirs of a deceased person’s property — diminishes in favour of father’s relatives, especially of father’s brothers and their sons. It is high time, therefore, to pay attention to and document the Nubian kinship terms before they are replaced by Arabic terms. As can be seen on the map, the Nubian languages are scattered over a vast area comprising western Sudan and the Nile valley of northern Sudan and southern Egypt. 424 Angelika Jakobi Map. Geographical distribution of the Nubian languages The Nubian language family includes Midob and the nearly extinct Birgid language of eastern Darfur, Kordofan Nubian of the Nuba Mountains, the extinct Haraza language of north-eastern Kordofan, and languages of the Nile valley, i.e. Kenzi, Dongolawi, Nobiin, and their medieval predecessors Old Nobiin and Old Dongolawi. Due to the many lexical and grammatical similarities, it is assumed that the Nubian languages are genetically related, i.e. that they are the descendants of a common ancestor language. This hypothetical ancestor language is called Proto-Nubian (PN). Based on a detailed comparison of 200 lexical items and the establishment of regular sound correspondences between the Nubian languages, Claude Rilly (2010) in his masterly study corroborates the hypothesis of the close genetic affiliation of the Nubian languages. According to Rilly, the Nubian family tree is divided in a western and an eastern branch, the western branch comprising Midob, Birgid, and the Kordofan Nubian languages, the eastern branch comprising the Nile Nubian languages. During recent fieldwork in Sudan1 I collected kinship terms of two Kordofan Nubian languages, Kaakmbee spoken on the western fringe of the Kordofan Nubian language continuum, and Uncunwee spoken in the southern part of that continuum. Moreover, I had the opportunity to record kinship terms of Dongolawi and the Kaargedi dialect of Midob. In addition, I have drawn kinship terms from published sources, such as Kenzi terms from Massenbach (1933 and 1962), Dongolawi terms from Armbruster (1965), Birgid terms from MacMichael (1918) and Thelwall (1977), Midob terms from Thelwall (1983) and Werner (1993), Nobiin terms from Lepsius (1880), Werner (1987) and Khalil (1996). Old Nubian terms are quoted from Browne’s dictionary (1996). In two languages, Old Nubian and Birgid, very few kinship terms are documented. For this reason there are often gaps in the sets of cognates presented below. This is not the first historical-comparative study of Nubian kinship terms. Rilly’s detailed comparison of the north-eastern Sudanic languages (2010: 420-529) includes thirteen reconstructed Proto-Nubian kinship terms: *too- di, pl. *too-ɲi ‘child/son’, *bɛs(-an) ‘younger brother’, *wer-i ‘brother, friend’, *as ‘daughter’, *baab(-Vn) ‘father’, *as-ti ‘grandchild’, *awa ‘grandmother’, *ogiji ~ ogoji ‘husband’, *éen ‘mother’, *kege-di ‘sister’, *ŋar ‘son’, *il-di ‘woman/wife’. 1 The funding of “Documenting and analysing Uncunwee: an endangered Sudanese language” by the Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project is gratefully acknowledged. Applying the comparative method, the reconstructions are based on sets of cognates with similar meaning and regular sound correspondences. 2. Morphological characteristics Kinship terms are relational terms designating the biological and/or social relations between two or more persons. ‘Father’ designates the relationship between a child and his/her father. ‘Husband’ is a term for the social and legal relationship between a woman and her male partner in marriage. Relatives are often conceived of as inalienable possession, therefore kinship terms are often obligatorily combined with possessive morphemes. In Nobiin, for instance, a possessive morpheme usually follows the head noun, e.g. ìrk úun ‘our village’, literally ‘village our’, but with kinship terms, the possessive morpheme is prefixed to the head noun, e.g. ùun-éssí ‘our sister’. Kinship terms with possessive prefixes are attested in the other Nubian languages as well. In MacMichael’s Birgid wordlist (1918), for example, several kinship terms begin with in- which is a possessive prefix composed of the person marker i- (presumably referring to the 1st person singular or plural) and the genitive marker -n, e.g. in-diʃoon ‘my/our mother’s brother’, in-intoon ‘my/our sibling’. In Birgid, the Kordofan Nubian languages and Midob, in addition to the possessive prefix, there is a special suffix marking kinship terms and a few other terms expressing close social relationship, e.g. ‘friend’ and ‘master’. I shall refer to this morpheme as “relationship suffix”, a term adopted from Kauczor who called it Korrelationsendung in his grammar of the Dilling language (1920). In Uncunwee, this ending is realized as -aŋ, as attested in ɪ́ntàŋ brother’, ‘sister’, átàŋ ‘grandchild’, ɪ́dàŋ ‘husband’s mother or father’. In Kaakmbee, the relationship suffix is often deleted in the singular forms but present in the plural forms. It is attested with a final velar or palatal nasal, e.g. fâg, pl. fàg-âɲ ‘father’, áɲ, pl. àɲ-âŋ ‘father’s sister’, át, pl. àt-âɲ ‘grand- child’. In the Birgid wordlists of MacMichael (1918) and Thelwall (1977), the relationship suffix is variously recorded as -oon, -on, -an, -am, -n, as shown in indiʃ-oon ‘mother’s brother’, inint-oon ‘brother, sister’, enn-on ‘mother’, uuzi- am-baab-an ‘husband’ (literally ‘children’s father’), inwu-n ‘grandfather’. The presence of the relationship suffix is blurred in Midob by the regular loss of PN syllable-final nasals, as attested in ée<*een ‘mother’, èejí<*kemsi Nubian kinship terms 427 ‘four’, ə́ədí<*endee ‘Pennisetum’ (Jakobi 2006). However, it is assumed that the Midob suffix -a is a cognate of the relationship suffix in Birgid and Kordofan Nubian, e.g. àɲ-á ‘father’s sister’, àb-à (Kaargedi dialect), àw-à (Örrti dialect) ‘grandmother’, tíij-á ‘mother’s brother’. The phonological and semantic similarities between the relationship suffixes in the western Nubian languages suggest that they are reconstructable as the Proto-Western-Nubian suffix *-VN, where the vowel V is realized as o and a in Birgid, and as a in Kordofan Nubian and Midob. The nasal N is realized as n, ɲ, ŋ in Birgid and Kordofan Nubian but in Midob it is lost. 3. Comparison of kinship terms Each of the comparative series below is arranged in the same way. The first line provides the gloss. This is followed by the abbreviation PN (Proto- Nubian) and then by the reconstructed item marked by an asterisk. The following lines present cognate lexical items from the individual Nubian languages in which the kinship term in question is attested. A kinship term attested in at least one language of the eastern and western branch is considered to be a reconstructible item of the Proto-Nubian lexicon. (1) ‘father’s sister’: PN *aɲ- Nobiin W. -àɲ; MK aɲ Uncunwee -āɲ-áŋ, pl. -āɲâŋ Kaakmbee -áɲ, pl. -àɲ-âŋ Midob I. àɲ-ì, W. àɲ-á The reconstruction of PN *aɲ ‘father’s sister’ is simple because the vowel a and the root-final nasal ɲ have been retained in Nobiin -àɲ, Uncunwee -àɲ- áŋ, Kaakmbee -áɲ, and Midob àɲ-ì, as attested in the Kaargedi dialect, and àɲ-á, as in the Örrti dialect. In Uncunwee, the root is extended by the relationship suffix -aŋ. In Kaakmbee, this suffix is only attested in the plural form. In Midob the relationship suffix -a appears in àɲ-á. There are no reflexes of *aɲ known for Old Nubian or Birgid. Kenzi- Dongolawi has replaced the reflex of *aɲ by a descriptive term derived from the genitive construction -baab-n-essi or -baab-n-issi ‘father’s sister’. (2) ‘grandfather’: PN *uw Nobiin MK u(i); W. -ùu, L. uuw, uuwi Ke-Do Mb. -uu, Do. -ùw Birgid inwun ‘ancestor’ Midob I. ə̀bbà; W. ùbbàr 428 Angelika Jakobi The reconstruction of PN *uw ‘grandfather’ is based on Nobiin -ùu, Kenzi- Dongolawi -uu or -ùw. The Birgid reflex of *uw is hidden in the item inwun which is extended by the possessive prefix in- and the relationship suffix -n. The root wu- appears to be a metathesized reflex of *uw.

The Temein cluster The Temein cluster consists of three languages spoken in the Nuba Mountains, Sudan, NE of Kadugli. Little has been published on these languages, but Roland Stevenson (†) elicited substantial lexical data during the 1970s and 1980s, mostly from Khartoum-based informants 1. For further information about the Stevenson papers see Blench (1997). This paper is based on Stevenson’s material, on unpublished notes made by Gerrit Dimmendaal 2 and on SIL files in Khartoum which contain significant lexical data contributing towards a phonology of Tese (cf. also Yip 2004). 1 Following Roland Stevenson’s death in 1992, his mss. were dispersed for potential editing. The Temein data was held by Robin Thelwall but nothing came of this and in 2006, the documents were passed to me. Following a request by Tyler Schnoebelen of Stanford University, scans were made of the original datasheets with a view to typing the material. This was begun but had to be completed by Roger Blench in mid-2007.     Taha A. Taha Florida A & M University The lexicon in endangered languages: The case of Dongolawi Nubian Abstract. Lexical change and attrition is one of the main signs or symptoms of language endangerment that can eventually lead to structural changes. And although the phenomenon of language endangerment/death has received much attention in sociolinguistic studies, the changes in vocabulary associated with it has not been given the same attention. This paper examines the sociolinguistic situation of Dongolawi Nubian*, a language variety that belongs to the Eastern- Sudanic group of the Nilo-Saharan family which is spoken in the northern region of Sudan. More specifically, the paper analyses a sample of DN lexicon with the purpose of identifying the extent of semantic change, including lexical change, attrition, borrowing, and other additions. Analysis of data reflects extensive borrowing from Sudanese Arabic (SA), loss of items associated with traditional ways of life, some of which are replaced while others are not. The study indicates that, despite heavy borrowing, the basic structure of the language variety still remains intact, with no apparent major changes in syntax such as word order. Hence, it is argued that the DN situation is not hopelessly irreversible, and that the variety could still be revitalized as long as there is willingness, commitment, and collaboration of efforts and resources on the part of policy makers, speakers of the language variety, and other organizations concerned with language endangerment.     A brief description of the Nobiin language and history By Nubantood Khalil, (Nubian Language Society) Nobiin language Nobiin (also called Mahas-Fadichcha) is a Nile-Nubian language (North Eastern Sudanic, Nilo-Saharan) descendent from Old Nubian, spoken along the Nile in northern Sudan and southern Egypt and by thousands of refugees in Europe and the US. Nobiin is classified as a member of the Nubian language family along with Kenzi/Dongolese in upper Nubia, Meidob in North Darfur, Birgid in Central and South Darfur, and the Hill Nubian languages in Southern Kordofan. Prior to that forcible displacement, Nobiin was primarily spoken in the region between the first cataract of the Nile in southern Egypt, to Kerma, in the north of Sudan. The following map of southern Egypt and Sudan encompasses the areas in which Nobiin speakers have historically resided (from Thelwall & Schadeberg, 1983: 228). Nubia Nubia is the land of the ancient African civilization. It is located in southern Egypt along the Nile River banks and extends into the land that is known as “Sudan”.     The Role of Indigenous Languages in Southern Sudan: Educational Language Policy and Planning H. Wani Rondyang A thesis submitted to the Institute of Education, University of London, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2007 Abstract This thesis aims to questions the language policy of Sudan's central government since independence in 1956. An investigation of the root causes of educational problems, which are seemingly linked to the current language policy, is examined throughout the thesis from Chapter 1 through 9. In specific terms, Chapter 1 foregrounds the discussion of the methods and methodology for this research purposely because the study is based, among other things, on the analysis of historical documents pertaining to events and processes of sociolinguistic significance for this study. The factors and sociolinguistic conditions behind the central government's Arabicisation policy which discourages multilingual development, relate the historical analysis in Chapter 3 to the actual language situation in the country described in Chapter 4. However, both chapters are viewed in the context of theoretical understanding of language situation within multilingualism in Chapter 2. The thesis argues that an accommodating language policy would accord a role for the indigenous Sudanese languages. By extension, it would encourage the development and promotion of those languages and cultures in an essentially linguistically and culturally diverse and multilingual country. Recommendations for such an alternative educational language policy are based on the historical and sociolinguistic findings in chapters 3 and 4 as well as in the subsequent discussions on language policy and planning proper in Chapters 5, where theoretical frameworks for examining such issues are explained, and Chapters 6 through 8, where Sudan's post-independence language policy is discussed.

LXIV, Z. 2, 2011, (s. 87–104) EDWARD LIPIŃSKI Meroitic (Review article)1 Abstract Meroitic is attested by written records found in the Nile valley of northern Sudan and dating from the 3rd century B.C. through the 5th century A.D. They are inscribed in a particular script, either hieroglyphic or more often cursive, which has been deciphered, although our understanding of the language is very limited. Basing himself on about fifty words, the meaning of which is relatively well established, on a few morphological features and phonetic correspondences, Claude Rilly proposes to regard Meroitic as a North-Eastern Sudanic tongue of the Nilo-Saharan language family and to classify it in the same group as Nubian (Sudan), Nara (Eritrea), Taman (Chad), and Nyima (Sudan). The examination of the fifty words in question shows instead that most of them seem to belong to the Afro-Asiatic vocabulary, in particular Semitic, with some Egyptian loanwords and lexical Cushitic analogies. The limited lexical material at our disposal and the extremely poor knowledge of the verbal system prevent us from a more precise classification of Meroitic in the Afro-Asiatic phylum. In fact, the only system of classification of languages is the genealogical one, founded on the genetic and historical connection between languages as determined by phonological and morpho-syntactic correspondences, with confirmation, wherever possible, from history, archaeology, and kindred sciences. Meroitic is believed to be the native language of ancient Nubia, attested by written records which date from the 3rd century B.C. through the 5th century A.D.

I would first like to thank Moges Yigesu and the team from the University of Addis Ababa for organizing this conference and hosting us here in Addis Ababa and Angelika Jakobi for her collaboration on putting in place there very exciting panels on Nubian phonology and tonology. Today I would like to talk about reconstructing Old Nubian prosody. Old Nubian is a Nilo-Saharan language1 spoken in the medieval Nubian king- doms established below the First Cataract of the Nile: Nobadia, Makuria, and Alwa. It has been attested between the 8th and 15th centuries,2 with a highpoint around the 12th century.3 Old Nubian is part of the Nubian family within the North-Eastern Sudanic subgroup of the Nilo-Saharan phylum. Its closest relatives are other Nile Nubian languages such as Dongolawi, Kenzi, and Nobiin, as well as the Western Nubian languages that include Birgid, Midob, and a large group of Kordofan Nubian languages. Together with Meroitic, it is the oldest known representative of the Nilo-Saharan phylum. Even though Old Nubian is an extinct language and did not, as far as we cur- rently know, have any system of expressing prosodic features such as stress or tone, it will be my claim that we can reconstruct at least part of its prosody based on assimilation, deletion, and epenthesis patterns that heretofore had remained unexplained. "From the Yellow Nile to the Blue Nile. The quest for water and the diffusion of Northern East Sudanic languages from the fourth to the first millenia BCE". Dr. Claude Rilly (CNRS-LLACAN, Paris) The quest for water and hence, for food supply, is a key issue in the appearance and diffusion of languages in the Sahelian regions of Africa. Climate changes, as occurred from the end of Neolithic period down to the second millenium BCE, played a major role in the redistribution of populations along the Nile river and its tributaries and can explain the appearance of a recently defined linguistic family, namely Northern East Sudanic (NES). This paper must be considered as a synthesis of several recent publications I wrote on this subject, so that I shall have to refer the reader, more often than not, to these earlier studies. Detailed demonstration of all these points would require much more time than is allotted to me. The Northern East Sudanic language group In his seminal study published in 1963, J. H. Greenberg divided the languages of Africa into four major phyla or superfamilies, namely Afroasiatic, Niger-Congo, Khoisan and Nilo-Saharan. If the three first phyla were more or less obvious, Nilo-Saharan was not so easily constituted, requiring from Greenberg a long work to merge twelve different families into one phylum.

In the very center of the Republic of the Sudan, the province of South-Kordofan is home to several tens of diverse indigenous communities, each of which speaks (alongside with Arabic, the main vehicular of that region) a tongue of their own.     1 Old Nubian — Black African Language of Most Ancient Attestation By Helmut Satzinger 1. Nubian Languages. Nubian is a dialect cluster, or a cluster of closely related languages. Nubian idioms were spoken in the Nile Valley between the 1st and the 3rd cataract (the greatest part of them has been displaced in the 1960s because of the flooding of their land), in the Kordofan mountains and in the Dar Fur Region. The Nubianlanguage areas suffered great losses in the past 125 years: In the Mahdist Wars many villagers were dispersed, if not killed in the fights; Nubian was replaced by Arabic as vernacular language in many places, especially in the South of the present Nubian-speaking area. After 1900, the Aswân Dam was built; the farmers of Lower Nubia lost their fields and therefore their economic basis. Many migrated to the towns in the north, in particular to Cairo. In the early 1960s the High Dam was erected south of Aswân, Lake Nasser (in Nubia: “Lake Nubia”) began to flood anything that remained from the Nubian lands in Egypt as well as in Northern Sudan. The Nubians had to settle elsewhere: the Egyptians mostly near Kôm Ombo, north of Aswân; the Sudanese (the "Halfâwis", from the district of Wâdi Halfa) near Khash el-Girba on the ‘Atbara River, near the Ethiopian border. Presently, dam projects (Merowe, Kajbar) cause severest irritation and opposition in the Sudanese Nile Valley. The 1980s brought particular desaster to the languages of many Sudanese peoples: the First Civil War 1965-72; 1983/1984 a horrid famine, with nearly 100,000 Darfûris left dead; the Second Civil War, 1983 to present, and in particular the Darfur Conflict,1 from 1 “The conventional point indicated to be the start of the conflict in Darfur was 26 February 2003, when a group calling itself the Darfur Liberation Front (DLF) publically claimed credit for an attack on Golo, the headquarters of Jebel Marra District.

Introduction This paper makes a number of brief proposals on pending issues in Old Nubian linguistics. I will argue that in order to advance Old Nubian studies toward a comprehensive grammatical description of the language,1 it is necessary to adopt a point of view that moves beyond the classicist perspective that has dictated much of the field of Old Nubian studies so far, and to eschew the traditional catego- ries that apply within philological investigations of Greek, Latin, or Coptic sources.
