REYNOLDS, Frederick AN APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF LIFE ON THE VICTORIAN GOLDFIELDS DURING THE 1850s. Circa 1870. Manuscript written in ink on [27] pp, being one gathering from a contemporary quarto size notebook, the text complete in itself, titled on first page Some account of my doings in Australia from 1855 to 1862; written in one hand throughout and signed by the author Frederick Reynolds at the foot of the final page; beneath this signature is written in pencil in a slightly later hand (probably that of a family member) Husband of Guglielma Melford; the handwriting throughout the manuscript is bold, neat and entirely legible, and Reynolds’ expression is that of a literate, reasonably well-educated person; the thickish notepaper, of a type consistent with an 1870s dating, is toned around the edges but is extremely well preserved and shows no signs of brittleness; the black ink displays a higher level of oxidisation (ie. is slightly browner) on the exposed first page than on the inner pages of the manuscript, as should be expected. The narrative reveals that Frederick Reynolds was an English miner from Bridgewater in Somerset. -

127 "STEELE RUDD," AND HIS GIFT OF LAUGHTER An Australian Literary Heritage [By ERIC D. DAVIS] (Read at a Meeting of the Society on 26 March 1970) To me personally—it is something very close to my heart to be asked to address you concerning my late father—bet ter known as "Steele Rudd." From as early as I can remember, I always thought he was the greatest man in the world, and with the passing of the years, my admiration for him has not diminished any. Needless to say, I am honoured when 1 am called upon to tell people about the person I always called "Dad." No doubt this is also the cardinal reason why I am in the process of writing his biography. The wording on his memorial cairn at Drayton, where he was bom, on the Darling Downs, Queensland, has always impressed me. It reads: "He brought to Australian writing the rich gift of hon est laughter with the undertones of the struggles and sor rows of the pioneers." Yes, indeed, he had the abUity to make people laugh, and at the same time combine his humour with pathos. I think it can be truthfully said his writings were an affirmation of the thoughts of W. M. Thackeray, the famous English author, that "A good laugh is sunshine in the house." Strangely enough, it wasn't my father's intention to ap pear as a funny man when he started to write in the early 'nineties, but as time went by, the literary mantle of fame which became his lot, I fear often weighed heavUy upon him as he endeavoured to please his reading public. -

E 344L — 34495 Australian Literature and Film Fall 2015, T Th 3:30-4:45 p.m. COURSE SYLLABUS 344L Australian Literature and Film: A representative selection of Australian writing and films from the founding, 1788, to the present. Prerequisite: Nine semester hours of course work in English or rhetoric or writing. The subject of each class meeting may be determined from the assigned reading for the day (see following). Prerequisites: 9 semester hours of coursework in English, Rhetoric, or Writing Required Texts o Australian Literature and Film — Co-op Packet o Robyn Davidson, Tracks (separate text) o Kate Jennings, Snake — Co-op Packet Have completed readings by their assigned date and come prepared for class discussion. This is an all-important important component in your class participation percentage; see below. Films — We will see a 60 minute documentary and five full-length feature films as well as scenes from one television miniseries—40,000 Years of Dreaming: The History of Australian Cinema; Walkabout; The Tracker; Muriel’s Wedding; On the Beach; & Mad Max: Fury Road. Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby. -
