A Year 1 Project Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People of Northern California 1 Artist Statement from Cover Artist Mahlija Florendo Art is something that has been a constant in my life. It has become a part of my daily life, and something I will forever practice. It has become a huge part of practicing my culture. As Indigenous people who have fought to overcome the pain of colonization and genocide, we as contemporary people have found aspects of our life that speak to us and speak our old language in a way that we understand. For me art has been that ancient language of my ancestors that has been passed along to me to understand and to bring back to my people. I have spoken and incorporated this language of art in many different tongues, one of them being my work as an organizer and advocate for Indigenous rights. Everyone speaks their resiliency in some form of life, and I have found creating pieces that reflect that resiliency has truly made me feel empowered as an Indigenous Woman. As an Indigenous Woman I have seen the importance of fighting for other Indigenous Womxn and reflect that here in this piece. I prefer to use watercolor, India ink, and Acrylic for my work. I enjoy playing with color and black and white because it gives balance to my work. I often include symbols of my culture and Indigenous Womxn because they inspire the core of my work. I find comfort personally creating safe spaces for Indigenous Womxn through my paintings and depictions of the culture that I felt disconnected to coming into this world but have found through speaking the language of my ancestors. -

A lot is riding on this set - a deep dive into their catalogue spanning their 10-year history. It's a new dawn for "America's Band". After four years of chaos dogged by declining record sales, lawsuits, mental breakdowns and worst of ail - irrelevance, this is their moment. Kicking off their two hour set with a Tdriving, kinetic 'Heroes And Villains' the hairy, funky-looking group are pretty much unrecognisable as the "Surfîng Doris Days" left behind by the counterculture back in '67. Leader Brian Wilson is absent, barely seen in public since he abandoned his opus SMiLE and abdicated his post as genius-in- residence. His brothers Cari and Dennis are here to avenge him, leading the charge of their formidable live assault. Even the lanky, balding figure of Mr 'California Girls' himself Mike Love has the bearing of a hip guru in his robes and beads. The gig is a triumph. With a new, hipper label behind them and a united front surely it was time for "America's Band" to shine, with or without their leader. The provincial art scene of the 1950's and 1960's gave birth to an international art capital, recognized since the eighties as an alternative to the New York art scene. The transformation of art forms and concepts and the emergence of innovative art movements were concurrent with the establishment of new art venues, museums and galleries, and the growing reputation of Southern California art schools. 1 The most significant expressions of this progression are presented in the 17 rooms of the exhibition with a selection of about 350 paintings, sculptures, installations, photos, films and videos. Following a chronological layout, the works are grouped by trends and movements. The exhibition starts with works from the 50's, when the art of assemblage reacted against the period's conformism in America. After that, several rooms are devoted to L.A. Pop from the 1960's, which examined the ordinary urban landscape. Then, the exhibition includes works representative of the Finish Fetish (California Minimalism) and Light and Space movements, which both included innovative materials and techniques in the late 1960's. -

Adolescent Development Factors California District Attorneys Use to Determine Whether Juveniles Should Be Tried in Criminal Court or Juvenile Court under the Provisions of Proposition 21, Codified as Welfare and Institutions Code Section § 707(d) Chapter One: Introduction A decision on whether or not to take a harder line on juvenile crime was made in California on March 7, 2000, when voters considered Proposition 21. The issues were whether the state’s century-old juvenile court system, which was built around the key components of rehabilitation, confidentiality of minors, and individual treatment, could handle violent criminals. Proposition 21 reflects a national debate on the values of juvenile courts (“California Weighs,” 2000). Proponent Pete Wilson, former Governor of California said, “We cannot ignore the fact that there are kids [in age] who are committing violent adult felonies, and we cannot tolerate it. And youth is no excuse for committing murder, robbery, rape, home invasions, or for terrorizing entire neighborhoods,” reports Jeffrey Kaye of KCET-TV, Online Focus - Juvenile Justice, on California's Proposition 21, which would require more juvenile offenders be tried as adults (Kaye, n.d., ¶ 1). Opponents describe the Proposition another way. We are in the midst of a transformation in the way society treats young people. Tough-on-crime politicians have abandoned the idea that youths are worth society’s rehabilitation and concern, instead embracing the notion that young offenders only deserve restraint and containment (Beiser & Solheim, 2000, ¶ 1). 1 Proposition 21 Background In 1995, the state legislature convened a bipartisan Task Force on Juvenile Crime and the Juvenile Justice Response (Nieves, 2000). -
