Facts On File News Services http://www.2facts.com/PrintPage.aspx?PIN=1980017010 Issue Date: May 09, 1980 Yugoslav President Tito Dies Succumbs to Four-Month Illness Carter's Funeral Absence Faulted Facts on Tito Succumbs to Four-Month Illness Josip Broz Tito, president of Yugoslavia and leader of the League of Communists, its ruling party, died May 4 after being hospitalized since January. The last of World War II's major figures died three days before his 88th birthday. [See 1980 Other World News: Yugoslav President Tito Loses Leg] Stevan Doronjski replaced Tito as League of Communists chairman. Vice President Lazar Kolisevski was named interim president of the State Presidency, an eight-member collective presidency made up of representatives from Yugoslavia's six republics and two autonomous provinces. Kolisevski would be replaced later in May by Cvijetin Mijatovic, who would serve a one-year rotating term. Tito's prolonged illness had given the Yugoslav government time to organize in preparation for his death. It was his strong personality that had helped unite the different and often antagonistic ethnic minorities in Yugoslavia. Filling the post-Tito vacancy was complicated by the absence of any officially recognized heir. Tributes to Tito poured into Yugoslavia from around the world. U.S. President Carter called him "a towering figure on the world stage.... President Tito's position in the history of his era is assured for all times." The President added that "America will continue its longstanding policy of support for Yugoslavia and do what it must to provide that support." Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty Images The U.S.S.R., which had expelled Tito from the international communist movement in 1948, praised the Yugoslav leader as "the outstanding leader of the Josip Broz Tito communists and workers of Yugoslavia and a leading figure of the international communist and workers' movement.

It charts the formation of national and regional consciousness among Vojvodina’s Serbs, Germans and Hungarians, from Habsburg times to the Second World War. It then argues that Nazi Germany’s racial war radicalised national tensions in Vojvodina. Nazi defeat resulted in the brutal expulsion of Vojvodina’s Germans, making Serbs for the first time a majority. The region’s claim to autonomous status after the war therefore clashed with the national-territorial principle applied to federalism by the victorious Communist Party of Yugoslavia, causing frequent friction and instability. Article1 The borderlands of Eastern Europe and the Balkans witnessed violent processes of nation-state formation in the nineteenth and particularly the twentieth centuries.

Approved for release, February 6, 2019. https://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/208960 Summary: This November 1983 RAND Report examines the dynamics of political leadership and prospects for leadership stability in post-Tito Yugoslavia. It analyzes the evolution of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY) since the late 1960s and the enhanced role of its constituent republican and provincial LCY organizations. It traces the devolution of power within the LCY that resulted in decentralized leadership authority and decision-making based on interregional consensus. It recommends shifting appraisals of the Yugoslav leadership from the federal to the republican/provincial level.
